PSU Internal Investigation out of Focus

In the wake of the JoePa, I mean Jerry Sandusky, sex abuse scandal, Penn State has launched a full internal review to determine what went wrong and correct the institutional failures so such an event never occurs again. Multiple outside agencies from the federal government down to the NCAA and the Big Ten have demanded action and accountability. Former FBI director Louis Freeh has been brought in to head the investigation. Make no mistake, wrongs will be found and corrective action will be taken. But, will they be the right ones? PSU in statements and actions by their new leaders seem to be pointing that the scandal sprung from the concern about the football program and the cash cow it ...

Police mugshot of Anthony Miranda, an alleged robber who's latest non-victim is an unidentified mixed martial arts fighter who competes in the UFC. An alleged robber in Chicago picked the wrong man to mess with. Anthony Miranda, 24, attempted a robbery and carjacking, police said, but his would-be patsy was a 33-year-old mixed martial artist who competes in the Ultimate Fighting Championships. The tables were turned rather quickly, according to the Chicago Tribune. According to police, the "victim" said Miranda approached his car near Kenneth Ave. and 55th St. and asked for a light for a cigarette. When the man, who did not want to be identified, said he didn’t have ...

The Brutal Truth About Penn State [Full Thread]

The problem can't be solved by prayer or piety — and it's far more widespread than we think "But you, when you pray, go into your inner chamber and, locking the door, pray there in hiding to your Father …" — Matthew, Chapter 6 It was midway through the pregame prayer session that the gorge hit high tide. There is always something a little nauseating in large spectacles of conspicuous public piety, but watching everyone on the field take a knee before the Penn State-Nebraska game, and listening to the commentary about how devoutly everybody was praying for the victims at Penn State, was enough to get me reaching for a bucket and a Bible all at once. It was ...

Memo to ESPN -- It's Not About A Scoop, It's About Protecting Children By Dan Gainor Published November 29, 2011 | FoxNews.comPrintEmailShareCommentsRecommendTweet As if the Penn State child rape scandal wasn’t enough to disgust, allegations about alleged molestation by Syracuse associate head coach Bernie Fine now dominate the sports news. Only those aren’t new allegations. Eight years ago, ESPN had a complaint from Bobby Davis, who claims Fine molested him for many years. Coupled with that complaint was horribly disturbing audio reportedly of Fine’s wife Laurie, exhibiting detailed knowledge of the abuse. Only now, that the charges have become public, has that ...

Two major events have occurred since the firing of Joe Paterno which prove that the news media are not only incompetent and dishonest but hypocritical beyond anything anyone would have thought possible. And both revelations are about as damning as could be imagined both against ESPN, whose commentators condemnation of Paterno and demands for his firing were some of the loudest, and the school officials at Central Mountain high school, where Sandusky's Victim One went to school. The first revelation concerns the molestation charges against Syracuse assistant coach Bernie Fine. One of Fine's accusers secretly tape recorded a phone conversation he had with Fine's wife in 2002 in ...

ESPN: It’s not “our job to go to authorities with evidence” of sexual molestation of minors

ESPN’s broadcast of the telephone conversation that Bobby Davis secretly recorded between himself and Bernie’s wife Laurie (ESPN Video) was absolutely appalling. This is not because of Laurie’s reaction to knowing of her husband’s activity, which is indeed extremely disturbing, but because of ESPN’s inaction. People at ESPN had evidence that young men were potentially being abused and did nothing. According to ESPN’s Mark Schwarz on CNN (CNN Video 2:22 mark)— We don’t see it as our job to go to authorities with evidence that we collect. We did not go to the authorities. What’s more, Schwarz says that ESPN delayed broadcasting the recording ...

Report: Sue Paterno wasn’t told to leave Penn State pool ReutersWednesday evening, a “source close to the Paterno family” — hey @ScottPaterno — told the Patriot News that Sue Paterno, wife of now-former Penn State head coach Joe Paterno, had been “told to leave a Penn State campus pool where she normally works out.” As it turns out, that “snub” may have not been that simple. Thursday evening, the same paper reported that Sue Paterno “was not told to leave a Penn State campus pool where she works out.” The paper goes on to write that “[t]he natatorium was closed for Thanksgiving.” The paper also notes that discussions are ...

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- A person close to former Penn State coach Joe Paterno's family tells The Associated Press his wife was turned away from a campus pool. Sue Paterno is an avid swimmer. The person, who requested anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation, said the rejection left the family saddened. University spokesman Bill Mahon told The Patriot-News of Harrisburg, which first reported the pool rejection, he was unaware of any directive. School trustees fired Joe Paterno on Nov. 9 from the job he held for nearly a half-century in the aftermath of child sex abuse charges against former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky. Paterno also was recently diagnosed with a ...

Two cases of child sex abuse alleged against Jerry Sandusky have been opened by Children and Youth Services in Pennsylvania. The cases were reported less than 60 days ago, and so they are still in the initial stages of the investigation. If they are found to be credible, these would be the first known cases to be reported since Sandusky’s arrest that involve current children. All of the other publicly known cases of alleged victims coming forward have been adults. In Pennsylvania, when an adult comes forward and alleges abuse -- even if it happened when that person was a child -- it’s solely a police matter. CYS only participates in the investigation if the victim is still ...

Miami (CNN) -- The chairman of Miami's board of trustees says he is backing university president Donna Shalala despite recent allegations that a booster showered dozens of players with cash, jewelry and hookers. "Without a doubt, these allegations are troubling and demand a thorough and honest evaluation of Hurricane Athletics," Leonard Abess, the chairman, said in a letter Friday. "President Shalala has taken a strong position, insisting on full cooperation with the ongoing NCAA investigation. Rest assured, ultimate responsibility for the conduct of the overall athletics department lies with the UM leadership, which includes President Shalala, the Board of Trustees and ...

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – Legendary Penn State football coach Joe Paterno clashed repeatedly with the university's former chief disciplinarian over how harshly to punish players who got into trouble, internal emails suggest, shedding new light on the school's effort to balance its reputation as a magnet for scholar-athletes with the demands of running a nationally dominant football program. In an Aug. 12, 2005 email to Pennsylvania State University President Graham Spanier and others, Vicky Triponey, the university's standards and conduct officer, complained that Paterno believed she should have "no interest, [or business] holding our football players accountable to our ...

If Tavo Hellmund is to be taken at his word — and there is really no reason not to trust him — he is a reluctant victim. “I’ve been working for six and a half years to make this race happen,” Hellmund said during a 30-minute press conference late Thursday afternoon. “I will do whatever it takes to make it happen this year.” If he said it once, he said it a dozen times. Not that what he wants matters anymore. Hellmund no longer pulls the Austin Formula 1 strings. Hellmund is out. Still listed on the website as a co-founder, Hellmund was paid a salary as a contract employee of Circuit of the Americas (COTA). His title was Chairman of the U.S. Grand Prix. ...

Idaho man charged with trying to assassinate Obama BOISE, Idaho (AP) — An Idaho man accused of firing an assault rifle at the White House believed he was Jesus and thought President Barack Obama was the Antichrist, according to court documents and those who knew him. At one point, he even suggested to an acquaintance the president was planning to implant computer tracking chips into children. Oscar Ramiro Ortega-Hernandez, 21, was charged Thursday with attempting to assassinate the president or his staff. He is accused of firing nine rounds at the White House last Friday night — one of them cracking a window of the first family's living quarters — when Obama and the ...

This might not go over well in Korea or editorial boards around America, but can we lay off Penn State for a minute? Please folks, take a deep breath before somebody calls for the entire school to be bulldozed. We’re all disgusted by the sexual-abuse scandal, but the torches and pitchforks are getting out of control. Major newspapers, websites want the season cancelled. Joe Scarborough, normally a voice of reason, called for the football program to be shut down for a year on his MSNBC show. The Korea Times has even weighed in, saying the NCAA should immediately hit Penn State with the death penalty. It somehow resisted the temptation to call Joe Paterno the Kim Jong-il of college ...

Police stressed to Outside The Lines they are in the early stages of the investigation. Fine Fine The alleged victim, Bobby Davis, now 39, told Outside the Lines that Fine molested him beginning in 1983 shortly before Davis entered the seventh grade. Davis, the team's ball boy for six years beginning in 1984, said the abuse occurred at Fine's home, at the Syracuse basketball facilities, and on road trips, including the 1987 Final Four. Let’s revisit, once again, the situation unraveling out in State College, Pa. To do so, today, we’d like to turn back the clock about a week and take a closer look at the document that introduced the world to the names Sandusky and Curley and Shultz, and a 28-year-old assistant football coach later revealed to be Mike McQueary. It’s called the presentment, and it contains the findings of the grand jury, all wrapped up in a tidy little 23-page narrative that contains all the lurid and shocking allegations that we’ve all become so familiar with over the past week-and-a-half. But some are asking questions about the propriety of these types of documents. We investigate ...

Former longtime Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky, who has been charged with 40 counts of criminal acts involving sexual abuse toward eight young boys, broke his silence in a telephone interview with Bob Costas on NBC's "Rock Center" on Monday night. In the interview, Sandusky claimed his innocence. Below is a transcript of the interview in its entirety. As a warning, it contains chilling content of the alleged crimes. Costas: “Mr. Sandusky, there’s a 40-count indictment. The Grand Jury report contains specific detail. There are multiple accusers, multiple eyewitnesses to various aspects of the abuse. A reasonable person says, ‘Where there’s ...
