(Japan) Fans pass on World Cup tours / Safety fears, expense, middling team behind reluctance to visit S. Africa

DEMAND for tour packages from Japan to the World Cup finals in South Africa is far lower than anticipated, with travel agencies blaming high prices, concerns about safety in the host country and tempered expectations about the national team's prospects. Although the event is less than a month away, unsold packages are abundant. Among the travel agencies certified by FIFA, the organizing body of the World Cup, JTB Corp., Nippon Travel Agency Co. and Kinki Nippon Tourist Co. had achieved only 50 percent of their sales quotas for tour packages as of Thursday. Nishitetsu Travel Co. lowered its sales quota from 1,500 for the 2006 World Cup to 600 for this year's event, but still has ...

By Matt Slocum, AP A 17-year-old Phillies fan who ran onto the field during a Phillies-Cardinal game was brought down in front of 40,000 people by a Taser from a uniformed officer, WXTF TV reports. The teen was wearing a red Phillies T-shirt and khaki shorts as he ran around the outfield, dodging security Monday night at Citizens Bank Park. Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams told Fox 29 news that the Taser is a "good tool" for police. "I think the police officer had to do what they think is in the moment, they're chasing this guy he won't stop," Williams said on the Good Day program. "They didn't use deadly force, he didn't pull out ...

Pat Tillman Film a Haunting Blindside

Journalists gave the story of soldier Pat Tillman’s death six years ago the hero’s treatment. What it deserved was real journalism. I have never quite gotten the Pat Tillman story out of my system. Only now am I understanding why. It has been six years and two days since he died, his head blown off amid a pile of rocks on the side of a hill in Afghanistan, killed by guys on his own team, other U.S. soldiers. After lying about it, the military eventually called it friendly fire and treated it as a mistake. Horrible, yes, they said. But a mistake. He was a football hero, a star safety for the Arizona Cardinals. Before that, he was a free spirit linebacker at Arizona State, whose ...

[Tea] Party foes plot vs. ‘racists, morons’ By Associated Press Tuesday, April 13, 2010 Tea Party foes, bent on making the conservative group’s members appear to be “homophobes, racists or morons,” say they’ll be crashing Tea Party demonstrations nationwide this week. It’s unclear if anyone associated with crashtheteaparty.org will crash tomorrow’s rally on Boston Common. Founder Jason Levin couldn’t be reached yesterday and was reportedly traveling. Levin told The Associated Press the group has 65 leaders in major cities across the United States who are trying to recruit members to infiltrate Tea Party events Thursday - tax-filing day. ...

On Friday night, Matt James' family gathered in Ohio to celebrate an uncle's 50th birthday party. The revelry came to an incomprehensibly brutal and tragic end with news delivered by one phone call. James, a hulking offensive lineman and Notre Dame's top recruit in the Class of 2010., died in a fall from a Panama City, hotel balcony while on a spring break trip with dozens of classmates from Cincinnati's St. Xavier High School. Panama City Beach police were not releasing any information late last night, but television station WHJG cited police as saying a teenager fell over the balcony railing of his motel room at 6:26 Friday evening and apparently died instantly. James ...

Instant Karma: Woman bow hunting carp gets jaw broken by fish Doesn’t get much stranger than this. It’s called ‘Extreme Aerial Bowfishing’. The sport was born out of the massive overpopulation of Asian Carp in the Illinois River. Each year residents take to the river with bows and literally shoot the jumping carp out of the air. It’s like shooting fish in a barrel until one bow hunter, Jodi, became the hunted. In an instant, a rogue carp leaps from the water and breaks Jodi’s jaw. The amazing images were captured by Field and Stream photographer Bill Konway. 12 345 67 8

The golf star's return may be at the prestigious Masters in Augusta, Ga.Woods has won the Masters four times, but should be return the spotlight would be even brighter. Britain is to give 42m condoms to South Africa in response to a request for an extra billion as part of an HIV prevention drive before the World Cup, the government will announce today. The request for British help in stockpiling sufficient condoms for the expected influx of thousands of football supporters in three months' time was made during President Jacob Zuma's recent visit to the UK to meet the Queen. "Obviously there's a big focus on the World Cup coming up and a huge increase in the number of people coming into South Africa," said the international development minister, Gareth Thomas, who will announce the £1m funding today at an emergency summit in ...

Canadians Forced to Apologize for Celebrating

Normally, celebrations that don't involve directly taunting the opponent or lighting something on fire go unnoticed in sports. Canada's women's hockey team did neither of these things Thursday night. After a 2-0 win over the United States clinched them a third straight Olympic gold medal, they celebrated with cigars, champagne, and beer on the ice, long after the stands had emptied. The International Olympic Committee was quick to react with shock and anger at such a horrifying scene. Naturally, Hockey Canada couldn't just ignore the IOC, so they apologized on behalf of their apparently overexcited players. Steve Keough, a spokesman for the Canadian Olympic Committee, ...

The International Olympic Committee will investigate the actions of Canadian women's hockey players who celebrated their gold medal victory Thursday night by swigging beer and smoking cigars on the ice in Vancouver. A number of players, including 18-year-old superstar Marie-Philip Poulin, were drinking alcohol on the ice following the team's 2-0 defeat of the United States. (The legal drinking age in British Columbia is 19.) Players lingered for more than 70 minutes after the awards ceremony reveling in the arena, which was empty except for media and arena staff. (Click here to view a slideshow of the celebration.) Gilbert Felli, the IOC's executive director of the Olympic ...

Reporting from Vancouver, Canada - Chris Shaw, an ophthalmology professor at the University of British Columbia, has made no secret of his misgivings about the Olympic Games in his home city. The event is going to soak taxpayers and primarily benefit land developers who backed Vancouver's Olympic bid, he warned in several public forums and a book about the Olympics, "Five Ring Circus." Shaw was walking into his office several months ago when two plainclothes police officers approached him, one of them holding his book. "Mr. Shaw, I want to talk to you. . . . Some of the things in here disturb me," he recalled one of the men saying. In the following weeks, Shaw, ...

VANCOUVER, British Columbia(AP)—The IOC has confirmed that a men’s Olympic luger from the country of Georgia has died after a crash during training. The International Olympic Committee says doctors were unable to revive Nodar Kumaritashvili, and the 21-year-old died at a hospital. IOC president Jacques Rogge says the death “clearly casts a shadow over these games.” Kumaritashvili lost control of his sled Friday, went over the track wall and struck an unpadded steel pole near the finish line at Whistler Sliding Center.

The Pure (Evil) Genius of the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics

I have about as much interest in sports or the Olympics as I do of having Smilin' Bernie Made-Off manage what little is left of my Individual Retirement Account. I watch almost no TeeVee except for a short time in the morning looking at CNBC to see what the markets did in Asia and Europe overnight. All week the CNBSers have been whining about how GLOBAL WARMING is destroying the Olympics, and they're having to haul in snow from all around the planet, blah, blah, blah. I don't know anything about Canada except that it's always snowy and full of eskimos, so I decided to look up Vancouver and see what's up with that place. Excepts from the Wikipedia article: Climate ...

A City Rejoices, but the Focus Is Elsewhere By RICHARD SANDOMIR Published: February 7, 2010 The final act of CBS’s Super Bowl broadcast Sunday night left me wondering how prepared the network was for a New Orleans victory. This was not an ordinary city whose Saints upset the Indianapolis Colts, 31-17. This was the team representing Hurricane Katrina survivors and the team that had not been to the Super Bowl in a lifetime dating to 1967. Yet in the immediate aftermath of the game, CBS showed only quickie shots of Bourbon Street. Was that the best CBS had for us? One could argue that it would have been justified in cutting to gathering points in the city after critical moments during ...

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Obama administration is considering several steps that would review the legality of the controversial Bowl Championship Series, the Justice Department said in a letter Friday to a senator who had asked for an antitrust review. In the letter to Sen. Orrin Hatch, obtained by The Associated Press, Assistant Attorney General Ronald Weich wrote that the Justice Department is reviewing Hatch's request and other materials to determine whether to open an investigation into whether the BCS violates antitrust laws. "Importantly, and in addition, the administration also is exploring other options that might be available to address concerns with the college football ...

| It's not at all uncommon to watch a college basketball game and see that 90 to 100 percent of the players are black. According to the University of Central Florida's Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport report titled "The 2008 Racial and Gender Report Card"," the percentage of black male basketball players in Division I was an all-time high at 60.4 percent. It was 45.9 percent in football and 6.0 percent in baseball. Diversity is worse in professional sports. In the National Basketball Association (NBA), almost 82 percent of the players are people of color, higher than last year's 80 percent. This is the highest percentage of players of color since the ...

January 28, 2010 —After nearly 50 years, the days may be numbered for United States Air Force Colonel (Ret.) Joseph Kittinger’s record 102,800-ft parachute jump from a balloon. Extreme sportsman Felix Baumgartner, of Austria, announced late last week he will try to break Kittinger’s all-time record jump by skydiving from a balloon from an altitude of at least 120,000 ft. What’s more, it’s likely that during his five-minute freefall Baumgartner will become the first person to exceed the speed of sound with his own body. Baumgartner aims to ascend in a pressurized capsule lifted by a helium balloon to the upper reaches of the stratosphere to at least 120,000 feet ...
