Are you sitting down? A California jury last week ordered Bay State native David Sanborn to pay $25,297 for his role in the West Coast Red Sox-Yankees brawl. “Typical Yankees fan. The Other Woman Overshadowed by Patrick, Fisher fights to keep racing Sat. May 10 - 2008 Anthony Schoettle - aschoettle@ibj.com IBJ staff A group of motorsports journalists stood open-mouthed along the wall of the Texas Motor Speedway in 1999 as they watched 19-year-old Sarah Fisher, fresh from the sprint car and dirt track circuits, zip past veteran open-wheel racers Buddy Lazier and Billy Boat. A murmur emanated from the onlookers as they watched Fisher pass on the outside in her first practice laps in an Indy Racing League car, a considerable feat for the best driver. This fresh-faced girl from Commercial Point, Ohio, was no circus sideshow. “You could see from the beginning, ...

rying to stem the infiltration of militia fighters, American forces have begun to build a massive concrete wall that will partition Sadr City, the densely populated Shiite neighborhood in the Iraqi capital. The construction, which began Tuesday night, is intended to turn the southern quarter of Sadr City near the international Green Zone into a protected enclave, secured by Iraqi and American forces, where the Iraqi government can undertake reconstruction efforts. “You can’t really repair anything that is broken until you establish security,” said Lt. Col. Dan Barnett, commander of the First Squadron, Second Stryker Cavalry Regiment. “A wall that isolates those who ...

The racial dynamics in professional baseball remain the same in 2008 as they have been for some time now – very aggressive recruitment and development of non-American players, along with very aggressive recruitment and development of black players inside America. Academies have been established in the Dominican Republic and elsewhere in Latin America to develop Hispanic prospects. Scouts are constantly scouring Japan, South Korea and other Asian countries for players to sign. Academies and programs have been set up in numerous U.S. inner cities to develop black prospects. The only players not aggressively recruited and developed in this manner are white Americans. Despite this, white ...

To give you an idea of the enormity of his achievement, Trevor is just the second South African, after the great Gary Player, to don the famous green jacket of Augusta. Like rugby and cricket, golf stands out as a sport in SA where great achievements have been commonplace. We have been blessed by having great golfers such as Ernie Els (twice), Retief Goosen (twice) and Rory Sabattini, who ...

How acoustic instruments torment their players. Years ago, I heard a lovely evening of South Indian music that involved a double-headed drum called a mridangam. Afterward, somebody asked its player what the stuff he'd been smearing on one of his drum heads throughout the performance was. "Cream of Rice," he replied. "You mean, like in the supermarket?" "Indeed, yes." Computer Slowing Down? What to Do About It New Herbal Supplement Promotes Healthy Prostate Make Expensive Vehicle Repairs a Thing of the Past Turns out, breakfast cereal is just the thing to keep the head of your mridangam smooth and supple. While pop musicians and classical ...

Couch Potato nation....... Sat Mar 29, 1:39 PM ET STOWE, Vt. - Bob Shannon is an avid hunter, a fishing guide and owns a tackle shop, but he sometimes struggles to get his own son out into Vermont's woods and fields. "He'll be sitting there with the video games," Shannon said of 9-year-old Alexander. "I finally had to lay down the law last summer: 'If it's a nice day, you're outside.'" Shannon's challenge reflects a larger problem plaguing many state governments: Revenue from hunting and fishing license sales is plunging because of waning interest in the outdoors. "We're losing our rural culture," said Steve Wright, a ...

Suns battle past Spurs Paul Coro The Arizona Republic Mar. 9, 2008 03:20 PM So this is what they were talking about. The Suns looked like the type of postseason team that they envisioned being with the Shaquille O'Neal trade, gutting out a 94-87 victory over that San Antonio team that they never could seem to beat. Phoenix looked nothing like the defensive squad that had been run over in recent games, holding San Antonio to two points over the game's final five minutes to win Sunday. Holding San Antonio to 34.9 percent shooting helped Phoenix remain the NBA's only team without a three-game losing streak this season. More importantly, it could go a long way in ...

The same big offseason question that has loomed over the Green Bay Packers for five years finally has a different answer. Quarterback Brett Favre will retire, several media outlets reported Tuesday, after weeks of speculation that he would return for his 18th NFL season. Favre's brother, Scott, told the Biloxi, Miss. Sun Herald that the quarterback will retire. The newspaper also reported that Favre has told Packers coach Mike McCarthy that he won't play next season. Favre's retirement comes on the heels of one of his finest seasons in which he led the young Packers to a 13-3 record and the NFC championship game, losing to the New York Giants in overtime. Most people know, even if it was learned the day of the Super Bowl, it was the Giants vs Patriots. The Patriots had an unbroken record. They were "unstoppable". From the opening day in 1776 they were winers. They won 18 straight. Everyone 'knew' the 'Patriots' would win, after all, there were more of US than them, Giants, the Federal Government. But no, at the end of the game, End Game, the Giant(s) won.

Sex gods Sports stars have been erotic icons since the time of ancient Greece Simon Goldhill Sunday February 3, 2008 Observer Sport Monthly The ancient Greeks thought that going to the gym regularly was a good way to prepare young men for war, and a necessary training for the body's health. It was also the place to pick up boys. Socrates, the philosopher, always had an eye for the cute young man, and he describes the scene at Taureas's gym when the hunk of the day walked in. 'The fellow looked absolutely amazing: his beauty, his size. Everyone seemed to me to fancy him - they were so dumb-struck and confused when he came in - with a great crowd of lovers following him.' ...

New England may go down as best team of all time with 19-0 record GLENDALE, Ariz. - This one is for history. No longer can the New England Patriots ignore it. Beat the New York Giants on Sunday and it means more than winning a fourth Super Bowl in seven years. More than reaffirming their dynasty in a sport designed to even the playing field. It means staking an undeniable claim to that most elusive of titles: greatest ever. “I think it’s the biggest game of all of our lives — my life, the entire team, our coaches,” said Tom Brady, the NFL’s Most Valuable Player and the Patriots’ poster boy for perfection. “We’re going to be remembering this game for as long as we ...

30/01/08 "ICH" -- - -Here’s your question, class: In his State of the Union, the President asked Congress for $300 million for poor kids in the inner city. As there are, officially, 15 million children in America living in poverty, how much is that per child? Correct! $20. Here’s your second question. The President also demanded that Congress extend his tax cuts. The cost: $4.3 trillion over ten years. The big recipients are millionaires. And the number of millionaires happens, not coincidentally, to equal the number of poor kids, roughly 15 million of them. OK class: what is the cost of the tax cut per millionaire? That’s right, Richie, $287,000 apiece. Mr. Bush ...

MADE IN AMERICA Bill Belichick is ruthless, demanding, and divisive - no wonder he ticks off everyone outside of New England. But the man on the Pats' sideline is carrying on a star-spangled tradition that stretches back more than 100 years. Updated: January 25, 2008, 5:10 PM ET - by Tom Farrey WHY IS BILL BELICHICK SUCH A COMPLETE JERK? Unless you live in New England, you may have pondered this question in 2007. It's not just the piling up of wins before ever-larger audiences that engenders so much loathing. It's the way he wins. It's Spygate. It's those surly postgame handshakes. The running up of scores. The jones for retribution against all perceived enemies. ...

Butt Out of Baseball

The U.S. Congress should butt out of baseball. Whether players use or have used steroids or other performance-enhancing drugs is a matter for the players, the owners and the fans to settle. It does not concern the federal government. One reason Congress is so inefficient and ineffective is that it wanders off the reservation too often, wasting time on topics and matters that the Constitution gives it no authority to mess with. Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., chairman of the House Oversight Committee, which recently held hearings on the topic, unfortunately is not only ignorant and/or disdainful of the Constitution, but seems to be a congenital busybody. Baseball is a game, and in the case of ...
