Poster Comment:Just something I have been noticing lately. Seems to be more talk from a certain quarter about how the government's official conspiracy theory™ in regards to the events of 9/11 are not only true but that anyone who doesn't toe the government line is a KOOK. And a lot of gibberish about Peak Oil and Global Warming. Anyone else notice there is a bit more of that than usual?

Everything has a story. Indeed, perhaps everything is a story. Too bad cabbages can't talk, or mountains. I'm sure they'd have interesting things to tell us. Not only are there stories, there are stories behind those, and even ones behind them. How far back do these stories run? Is there an infinite regress? Perhaps. Maybe it's stories all the way back -- and all the way forward, all the way up, and all the way down. It could be they never end. Let's take society today, and the wars in which we are involved. There are many stories to explain them. The three I hear are: Oil, Israel, and Empire. They may be true, or they may be not true, or they may be partly true. Are ...

The Romantic Life of Brainiacs

College-educated, highly successful women have long had a reputation for marrying less (and having lousier sex). But in a historic reversal of past trends, these women now triumph in matrimony. A marriage historian explains. Pity the overschooled old maid and the lonely career woman. Highly educated or high-achieving women are less likely to marry and have children than other women. If they do marry, they are more likely to divorce. Even if they don't divorce, their marriages will be less happy. And, oh, yes, they'll be sexually frustrated, too. These maxims, widely accepted for at least two centuries, are bad news for a state so focused on brainy pursuits. Thirty-five percent ...

Goldi, to westvalley, ignoring the not-very-subtle implied threat of violence: "He's the second coming of Hitler. It surprises me that Mossad hasn't handled the situation yet. -Eric Peters did a piece here recently called How To Survive Traffic Stops in the New America: Submit, Instantly, featuring the case of a white biker who was apparently speeding, on drugs, had been drinking, was carrying an unconcealed knife, and reached into his jacket without being asked to.[Aaron Snyder testifies in officer shooting trial, May 12, 2010] All of which doesn't necessarily justify his shooting, just adds some perspective. It's possible that as drunk-drugged-speeding-legally-armed-but-not-with-a-firearm-biker, who had probably been stopped by the police before, the biker should have known better than to make what police trainers (and coroners) call a "furtive ...

U.S. Childlessness is Up
Post Date: 2010-06-28 12:13:36 by Turtle

Nearly 1 in 5 American women beyond childbearing years never gave birth as fewer couples, particularly higher-educated whites, view having children as necessary to a good marriage. {snip} The figures show that among all women ages 40-44, about 18 percent, or 1.9 million, were childless in 2008. That’s up from 10 percent, or nearly 580,000 in 1976. Broken down by race, roughly 20 percent of white women are childless, compared with 17 percent of blacks and of Hispanics and 16 percent of Asians. Still that gap has been narrowing: Since 1994, childlessness for blacks and Hispanics has grown by 30 percent, about three times the rate for whites. {snip} After reaching a high of 3.7 ...

I was sondering about this yesterday. My last girlfriend, before she met me, had signed up for one of those Chemistry/eHarmony/Match.com sites. She told me she had a few dates and they were catastrophes. They had nothing in common. And she paid money for this! I'll bet not one person out of ten thousand finds a mate on these sites. Out of curiosity I once took the test at Chemistry.com. They asked questions about the ratio of my ring and index finger (men have longer ring fingers due to testosterone in the womb). I consider such a ratio irrelevant in a relationship. They asked one question each about politics and religion -- which I have found to be exremely important in ...

What the Hell Happened to Texas?

Just spent the last six days in Texas, from Denton to Sinton to Goliad to Gainesville. Rented a car, stayed in great hotels, and even managed to eat some outstanding Tex-Mex food, but there's a f'kload of Texas to drive across and I noted the following: 1) 95 percent of the FM radio stations are Mexican crapfest music. WTF? I used to be able to count on western swing, classic country, southern rock, or eclectic Austin mix for miles and miles. Now it's accordion shit and Mexican disco. 2) And while we're on the subject of Austin. What.the.fuck.? I got caught on I-35 at Round Rock at around 3 PM and it took two f'kin hours to get clear of Austin. AUSTIN. I-35 is six ...

Commentator's Disease Letting Them Eat Cake When I read columnists or listen to talking heads on the lobotomy box, they strike me as delusional. What are these decapitated crania prattling about? From what morgue did they escape? What country are they from? Certainly not the America I grew up in. I conclude that they suffer from Commentator’s Disease, which consists in the confluence of several disabilities, the first being high intelligence. Washington, being a center of power, politics, graft, and corruption, attracts the very bright. An acquaintance once said, “Inside the Beltway, you assume that everyone is in the ninety-ninth percentile.” She meant that in the ...

The End of Men

Earlier this year, women became the majority of the workforce for the first time in U.S. history. Most managers are now women too. And for every two men who get a college degree this year, three women will do the same. For years, women’s progress has been cast as a struggle for equality. But what if equality isn’t the end point? What if modern, postindustrial society is simply better suited to women? A report on the unprecedented role reversal now under way— and its vast cultural consequences In the 1970s the biologist Ronald Ericsson came up with a way to separate sperm carrying the male-producing Y chromosome from those carrying the X. He sent the two kinds of sperm ...

If you're still laboring under the delusion that Uhhmerkka is free, try to do this: Go out and buy a replacement spout for a gas can or a gas can that isn't an EPA/CARB certified, childproof, self-closing, non-vented, Rube Goldberg of a clusterfuck that actually works. Can't be done, the sale of working gas cans and replacement parts has been outlawed in all 50 states since January 2009. WE SO FREEEEE! Poster Comment:Didn't O'boingo say there were 57 states? Maybe I can get a new spout in one of those 7 'other' states. Hell, I may even splurge for a whole new can if I'm going into the smuggling business.

Left Behind Culturally

I have just previewed a videotape of a new movie, which will be released on February 2: "Left Behind." The best I can say for it is this: "Two thumbs off!" (See Judges 1:6.) "Left Behind" is based on an astoundingly successful fundamentalist publishing venture, a series of novels known collectively as Left Behind. At last count, there were eight volumes in this series. This series has generated sales totaling approximately a quarter of a billion dollars in just five years. Big money. Big audience. Big hopes for a very small movie producer. The series is co-authored by Rev. Tim LaHaye, husband of Beverly LaHaye, who runs the Christian activist organization, ...

The following is an actual question given on a University of Arizona chemistry mid term, and an actual answer turned in by a student. The answer by one student was so ‘profound’ that the professor shared it with colleagues, via the Internet, which is, of course, why we now have the pleasure of enjoying it as well : Bonus Question: Is Hell exothermic (gives off heat) or endothermic (absorbs heat)? Most of the students wrote proofs of their beliefs using Boyle’s Law (gas cools when it expands and heats when it is compressed) or some variant. One student, however, wrote the following: First, we need to know how the mass of Hell is changing in time. So we need to know the rate ...
