Corporations are not Free Market

Market fundamentalists, who believe that unhindered market forces will generate optimal socioeconomic outcomes while market management will invariably generate perverse outcomes, fail to recognize that large corporations are engaged in nothing other than the "management" of very large chunks of the economy. Corporate "governance" is no different than government "governance". In 2008, for e.g., Exxon Mobil's gross earnings were $408 billion, while the GDP of Venezuela was $403 billion. Exxon's managers "manage" more economic resources than does the nation of Venezuela. Yet market fundamentalists believe that Exxon is a 'virtuous' free ...

On Surviving Gossip

And it doesn't require Hercule Poirot to determine why men might be disinclined to pay attention: The typical woman spends five hours a day – more than a third of her waking hours – chatting and gossiping, a study has revealed. Whether at home or work women natter for about 298 minutes every day, it found. Discussing other people’s problems, who is dating who and other people’s children form the basis of most of the chat. One of the things I find fascinating about social etiquette is the way that what is frowned upon in the Bible, considered a mortal sin by the Catholic Church, and considered to be a deathly bore by nearly half the population is nevertheless ...

The Constitution of the United States

Basic Principles, pages 212-214 The third principle was the guaranty of individual liberty through constitutional limitations. This marked another great contribution of America to the science of government. In all previous government building, the State was regarded as a sovereign, which could grant to individuals or classes out of its plenary power certain privileges or exemptions, which were called "liberties." Thus the liberties which the barons wrung from King John at Runnymede were virtually exemptions from the power of government. The Fathers did not believe in the sovereignty of the State in the sense of absolute power, nor did they believe in the sovereignty of the people ...

“All of the world's problems are products of the male ego,” said a swaggering bulldagger she-cop in Law and Order the other night. Average gringa. Actually, only some of the world's problems, as for example wars, are products of the male ego. Of course, a curmudgeonly male—though I don't know any of these—might respond, “Woman, everything that keeps you and your sisters from squatting in caves and crushing lice is a product of the male brain.” Which is true. It is curious: Women seem to have no idea how profoundly they depend on men, and not just to fix thingy-whiches that make cars go. The pattern is that men invent and women use. Men ...

Behind the Georgia Guidestones (Implementing the Killer Commandments) By Coral Snake Part 3 of a 5 part article. Last time we looked into the history of the “Progressive” brand of totalitarianism behind the Georgia Guidestones and how it was developed by BOTH big business and big government. In this part we will be looking at how the commandments of the Georgia Guidestones are being implemented now and who in big business and big government is doing the implementing. We will start with the arch genocidal company of “big business” in this article, Monsanto inc. The danger of this company and its partnerships with big government through corruption of the patent office ...

In the September 1992 EWR, and again in the 2004 revision of my little Uncle Eric book The Money Mystery, I proposed that the conventional view of the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy might be wrong. I suggested what I believe is a more realistic — and chilling — view. Those projections appear to be coming true now, so it is time for a comprehensive review of what’s happening to us. Keeping this article as scientific as possible, we will begin with… ...two clearly observable facts The first is that the Federal Reserve creates dollars and injects them into the economy. This is no secret. In Washington, inflating the money supply is considered a good thing; the ...

Government Overhead

Government Overhead Seems like every year we go through this, this whole budget wrangling nightmare, and every other year there is a threatened government shut down. Republicans try for “draconian” cuts while the Democrats fight for the little guy trying to keep programs from being cut. Of course there are never any real cuts. Programs continue to increase the question is really by how much. Or at least that is what we are told. Reality is much worse. Let’s use the business model for a moment. The analogy isn’t perfect but it will serve. In a standard business, your major expense is overhead or labor costs. When a business runs a deficit they might cut services or ...

Explaining Why Cats are Pure Evil and Have No Good in Them at All
Post Date: 2011-03-26 12:58:57 by Turtle

There seem to be two kinds of people in the world: those who don't understand cats, and those who think cats are kind of douchebags. Unfortunately for cat lovers, science has kind of come down on the side of that second group. Research has revealed that a lot of the quirky and even cute things your kitty does are actually signs that your cat is kind of a dick. #6.Meowing to Imitate a Baby Human Cats have many different ways of communicating, but the meow is every cat's go-to vocalization when it wants to tell us something; be it, "I'm hungry," "pay attention to me" or "I just took a dump, go clean it up." However, far from the one-dimensional ...

I've read musings about such a movie, but did not know it was even being filmed. The release date for part 1 is April 15 2011. The trailer looks pretty good.Atlas Shrugged Part1 I've read the book, and it will be interesting to see how closely the movie follows it. I'm guessing the John Galt speech will be in part 2.

'Hobbit' Filming Begins in New Zealand

Filming for the J.R.R. Tolkien-classic, The Hobbit, is underway at Stone Street Studios in Wellington, New Zealand after months of setbacks that delayed production. The first installment of the Warner Bros. and New Line Production film is not expected to be released until December 2012, while the second part is slated for release in 2013. Tolkien, a devout Catholic, wrote The Lord of the Rings series in part to explore his religious faith but chose not to do so in an explicit way but rather to highlight moral themes and philosophies. The Hobbit, a prequel to The Lord of the Rings trilogy, stars Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins. Cate Blanchett, who appeared in The Lord of the Rings, will ...

Genes, Not "Culture"—Why the Japanese Don’t Loot
Post Date: 2011-03-19 11:14:16 by Turtle

As Japan’s agony grinds on, more and more foreign observers are marveling at the disciplined, orderly behavior of the victims of one of the greatest natural disasters of our time. Homeless Japanese patiently stand in line for food and water. They huddle uncomplainingly in cramped shelters. They do not loot. Why is the aftermath of catastrophe in Japan so unlike that in Haiti or Chile or New Orleans? Japan expert after Japan expert has been rolled out to give the obligatory one-word answer—culture. But that’s not an explanation. All these experts do is describe the Japanese: they are community-minded, polite, honest, stoical, they care about “face”, etc. We knew ...

On Public Education (Jerry Pournelle)

"How Not to Lay Off Teachers" in today's Wall Street Journal (link) rather weakly repeats something that everyone who studies the education mess knows. It's worth your time if you have any doubts that seniority is not the right way to determine who should be paid public money to teach in public schools. Of course just because everyone knows something doesn't mean much. The steep deficits that states now face mean that teacher layoffs this year are unavoidable. Parents understandably want the best teachers spared. Yet in 14 states it is illegal for schools to consider anything other than a teacher's length of service when making layoff decisions. It gets worse. ...

Japanese Don’t Loot

The media are cautiously beginning to note that the earthquake/tsunami in Japan has not resulted in a single reported case of looting or even disorderly behavior. Dazed residents have gone back to smashed houses to salvage what they can, but no one worries about thieves. Thousands of homeless line up quietly and politely as they wait for emergency food and water. The contrast with what happened after the Haiti earthquake last January or Hurricane Katrina in 2005 could not be more stark. In both cases, there was an almost immediate descent into savagery, with police officers joining in the looting. In New Orleans, evacuation centers became nightmares of violence and lawlessness, and the ...

The Most Important Event of the 20th Century

The Treason of the Clerks Asked to name the most important event of the century, the temptation is to look to technology. The first industrial revolution was based on big centralized power sources. This century saw a second industrial revolution built around devices like the quarter-inch drill: small, portable, high energy devices allowing decentralization of production. No sooner was that well begun than we had another industrial revolution built around robotics. Then came the computer and the information revolution that has only well begun. All of these events have profound effects on everything we do. Then there's medicine: this century saw sulfa drugs and penicillin, the most ...
