Wisconsin is no place for cat-hunting, governor says MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A proposal to legalize the killing of feral cats is not going to succeed, Gov. Jim Doyle said Wednesday. "I don't think Wisconsin should become known as a state where we shoot cats," said Doyle, a Democrat who neither hunts nor owns a cat. "What it does is sort of hold us up as a state that everybody is kind of laughing at right now." He told reporters his office had received calls from around the country denouncing a proposal adopted Monday at meetings of the Wisconsin Conservation Congress, a public advisory group, that would classify wild, free-roaming cats as an unprotected species that ...

MANAMA, April 3 (Reuters) - Michael Schumacher and Ferrari's miserable start to the Formula One season continued on Sunday when the seven times champion retired from the Bahrain Grand Prix. Schumacher, winner of 13 of last season's 18 races, has now retired from two of the first three grands prix, with just two points to his credit. Ferrari took a gamble on rushing their new F2005 car into service in Bahrain two races ahead of schedule after their modified old car proved powerless to match Renault's pacesetting Fernando Alonso in Malaysia. Despite Schumacher qualifying on the front row and matching Alonso's pace for the first 12 laps, his brakes appeared to lock up as he approached a ...

Then many expressed disbelief after they discovered an audio-enhanced website where he spoke out against Jews and blacks, including FDU basketball players. "He was my favorite professor," said one student. "I can't believe it is the same man." In fact, Jacques Pluss, an adjunct professor at the Metropolitan Campus, openly discussed his March 21 dismissal from Fairleigh Dickinson in a 44-minute interview on a website of the National Socialist Movement designed with swastikas and a picture of Adolf Hitler. Pluss said he was "removed" from his classroom duties when he ...

Scientists back caning Russian scientists claim a beating on the naked buttocks with a cane is the perfect way to cure everything from depression to alcoholism. Researchers at Novosibirsk say caning releases endorphins, the body's natural 'happy chemicals', Izvestia reports. Endorphins lead to feelings of euphoria, a reduction of appetite, the release of sex hormones and an enhancement of the immune response. They also have a similar effect on pain to drugs such as morphine and codeine, but do not lead to addiction or dependence. The scientists, headed by Biologist Dr Sergei Speransky, claim corporal punishment similar to that doled out regularly in British schools in the last century ...

Dysfunctions J-School for Jerks By Joshua Green, Atlantic Monthly 3/05 Feb 8, 2005, 10:22 As the second George W. Bush administration gets under way, holdovers from the first one seem to include not only a handful of cabinet secretaries but also the fierce divide that characterized American politics for much of Bush's first term. For evidence of both look no further than the political shoutfests on cable television: Hardball, Crossfire, Hannity & Colmes, and the reigning king, The O'Reilly Factor. Each features an endless procession of motormouths, the most successful of whom display their shaky grasp of current affairs with the belligerent energy of a loutish barfly. Yet the format ...
