It was Ralph Nader of all people who tried to have the directors of Fortune 500 corporations recite the Pledge of Allegiance before their board meetings. They almost invariably refused to do so, citing what I just said. They operate in many countries and owe no particular allegiance to any single one of them.

I agree with the first half, but not the second half. For example China's communist party is coming close to becoming the unquestionable top power in the world.
The nations of the E.U. are politically at each others' throats on the Euro and debt defaults.
