Sarah Palin may be edging closer to a 2012 presidential run, telling Fox News "I would give it a shot" if the American people think she's "the one."

The former Alaska governor and 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee was in Des Moines, Iowa, Friday for the Reagan Dinner, a big GOP fundraiser in the heart of water-testing country for presidential candidates.

Palin has remained coy about her ambitions, but she elaborated a bit in an interview with Fox News, attaching several conditions to the possibility of a 2012 presidential run.

"If the American people were to be ready for someone who is willing to shake it up, and willing to get back to time-tested truths, and help lead our country towards a more prosperous and safe future and if they happen to think I was the one, if it were best for my family and for our country, of course I would give it a shot," she said.

"But I'm not saying that it's me. I know I can certainly make a difference without having a title. I'm having a good time doing exactly that right now."

Palin, a Fox News contributor and best-selling author since leaving the governor's mansion last year, has become one of the Tea Party movement's biggest allies. She's also thrown her clout around in the GOP primary season with a string of endorsements.

She said in February that she'd be "willing" to take on President Obama in two years, and White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said Friday he suspects she's testing the water.

But while her star power can dominate the airwaves and shake up congressional elections, she's done little to organize a Republican ground game compared to other GOP hopefuls already stumping in the key lead-off states of Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina.

Iowa hosts the first-in-the-nation presidential caucuses, and several other talked-about 2012 prospects have already visited or made plans to do so.

"We've seen Tim Pawlenty here a fair amount of times, we've seen former Speaker Newt Gingrich here a number of times," said Matthew Strawn, chairman of the Iowa Republican Party. "Mitt Romney has returned to the state, Mike Huckabee was here during the primary."

At least 10 Republicans appear to be jockeying for 2012.

Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, who chairs the Republican Governors Association, came to Iowa in August. Indiana Rep. Mike Pence, a member of the GOP House leadership, is doing the rounds, as is former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum. Lately the buzz is about Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels, a former Bush budget director with major connections and growing popularity.

Social conservatives have loved Palin from the moment she hit the national stage two years ago, when John McCain named her to be his running mate. Her Tea Party emphasis on constitutional and fiscal conservatism broadens her GOP appeal, but polls show her favorable ratings have been dropping.

"Iowans just need to know that there's real substance there. She needs to prove that," said Ed Failor, president of Iowans for Tax Relief.

Whom shall she choose as her VP running mate? John McCain.

Nah... she needs a neo-con warhawk to solidify the GOP. Maybe John McCain, Richard Pearle or perhaps Rush Limbaugh; then again, a so-called patriot ... Dick Cheney, again.

Since the VP slot for Palin is being considered..... I wager Ollie North. He comes from the era of Reagan and that close association should tie the knot for the GOP.

Since both she and Barry kneel to the Amen choir, there is no difference between them in terms of foreign policy. It sucks hard, but that's the deal. The only difference I see is color, gender and domestic policy. IMO she is the better that Barry on domestic policy. Yes, but Perot did pretty good. I voted for the little bugger too.

You are discounting the massive disgust for both parties. You have people say that only the two party fraud can win, but I say that's MSM indoctrination. A savvy candidate who knows how to use the Internet, bring out the youth vote and speak some much needed truth to power could make it. In fact, with such massive discontent, now is the best time to try and the best chance to succeed. The major stumbling block of being on the ballot in all 50 states would need to be rectified IMMEDIATELY.

The worse the economy gets, the better the chances for an outsider. And, we both know, it's only going to get worse. ; (

You did Perot too? Well that's two of us :)

Some on 4um did Clinton, and others did Bush #43 twice, and some did Barry (and will again) so I guess it's best we don't paint each other with scarlet letters.

As you know blacks vote for other blacks in a percentage approaching 98%. The MSM dismisses that as solidarity. This same rule doesn't apply to whites. If we vote for a white because they're white we're a racist. Well, since that name rolls off my back, and since the difference between Barry & Palin is color and, IMO, a less intrusive central government (Palin would be marginally better), I'm voting white. After 18 months I'm tired of looking at Obama.

I heard all I needed to hear about S Palin in Oct '08 when her husband said "McCain and Sarah Palin are so much alike it's scary," It only got worse after that.

But if she picked Ron Paul I'd assume that she had an epiphany, or something, and that they now agree on more than they disagree.

I don't know much about Rand.

I will vote for Alan Sabrosky for President. He will guarantee an end to Israel and the Federal Reserve.

God is always good!

I don't think the O'tards will get another chance to vote for the usurper. If he runs again he is facing ballot challenges in all 50 States over his eligibility. The PTB won't risk it, and he's pissed off enough people that it is doubtful he could get, assuming a more or less honest vote count - ha, ha, (s)Elected again.

I hope you're right, but my years on this planet have left me with one political absolute; the more melanin one possesses, the less likely the rule of law will apply to said person. I'm fully expecting to see Obama in '12, but again, hopefully you're correct.

I am guessing some cover story will be concocted wherein he will declare victory, and he and the First Wookie will ride off into the sunset. I won't go 100% on it but I think it the most likely scenario - barring some sort of break that would allow clear demonstration of the fact that he is not eligible to hold the office. The PTB will fight that because all of the agenda items he has helped put in place would be invalidated.
