PATRIOT ACT EXTENSION FAILS

Thanks to your dedicated efforts, the motion to suspend the rules and pass the extension of three PATRIOT Act provisions failed tonight in the House of Representatives! Since they were attempting to pass it on the suspension calendar, the vote required two thirds (290 members) of the House to agree to it.

The vote came down to the wire, and you could hear the arms breaking on Capitol Hill out here in Springfield, VA.

By a vote of 277-148, the House failed to pass the extension - click here for the roll call vote to see how your representative voted!

Thanks again for all you've done, but remember, we can't let up pressure now. This won't be the last we've heard of the PATRIOT Act renewal in the House.

'House out of order' after first blockage of Patriot Act in ten years

...87 new Republican Congressmen and 13 new Republican Senators were sworn into office last month. Many of them claim to hold 'Tea Party' limited government type values. Yet out of the 87 new Republicans in the House, we had a gain of only 16 votes against the Patriot Act compared with last year.

So much for the TEA Party being an agent of change within the GOP....but I'm glad the extension failed nonetheless.

However it died, and whoever killed it, I could care less.

Keep 'em coming.

Artisan, I think we need to allow at least one day to celebrate a small, but important victory.

Patriot Act extension fails in the House by seven votes

House rejects Patriot Act extension

More than two-dozen House Republicans bucked their party to oppose the measure that would extend three key provisions in the counterterrorism law.

By Paul Kane and Felicia Sonmez Washington Post Staff Writers Tuesday, February 8, 2011; 9:21 PM

House Republicans suffered an embarrassing setback Tuesday when they fell seven votes short of extending provisions of the Patriot Act, a vote that served as the first small uprising of the party's tea-party bloc.

Well, we shall see this year if there is any change in direction for this government.

We are still within the confines of the "one party system".

There just was by seven votes. Now it has to hold until the 28th. I will grant anything can happen bet. now and then, but there is no way this can be construed as anything except good news.

Jethro...

On such crucial voting, the votes are decided on and tallied in the backroom.. BEFORE THE VOTE. EVERY TIME.

There is no way this heinous act will be derailed.

I can't see into the future, but I can at least take in a small amount of good news, and this is good news.

Many of the 26 Republicans who voted against the bill Tuesday were new House members.

OK, so I am a wet blanket at the party.

When this comes to the finish line we will see how steadfast the newbies are.

Both "parties" love the Patriot Act.

44 - House votes to proceed on Patriot Act extension

Posted at 4:05 PM ET, 02/10/2011 House votes to proceed on Patriot Act extension By Felicia Sonmez

The House on Thursday voted to proceed on a measure that would extend key provisions of the Patriot Act counter-terrorism surveillance law, two days after the proposal came up short in a Republican-led effort to approve it under fast-track rules.

The House voted 248-to-176 to proceed on the measure, with nine lawmakers not voting. Only four Republicans voted on Thursday against proceeding, in contrast to the 26 who opposed the bill on Tuesday night.

The four Republicans voting "no" on Thursday were Reps. Ron Paul (Texas), Chris Gibson (N.Y.), Raul Labrador (Idaho) and Tom McClintock (Calif.). All four had opposed the measure on Tuesday. Meanwhile, 172 Democrats voted against proceeding Thursday, up from the 148 who voted "no" on Tuesday.

The House is expected to easily pass the measure when it comes up for a final vote, likely early next week. Then it will get sent on to the Senate, where lawmakers are debating three separate proposed timelines.

The Patriot Act provisions are set to expire on Feb. 28 if Congress does not act to extend them.
