So exactly what was George Wilcken Romney true citizenship status? I believe that he would have been required to apply for naturalization, but he did not. How can Mitt Romney be considered a natural born citizen, when his father was possibly an illegal alien , and not a US citizen?

Mitt ROmney's father is George W. Romney (1907-1995), once a Governor of Michigan and a Republican candidate for President (1968). GWR was born in a Mormon colonia in Mexico to parents who were both US citizens (and non- polygamist). When he was still young the family migrated back to Utah because of the political unrest in Mexico. I remember GWR's run for the nomination and I never heard a word said against his eligibility as a natural-born citizen.

Certainly Mitt Romney was no "anchor baby". His father's entitlement to enter and stay in the US was not at all dependent on Mitt. Nor has there ever been any legal authority to suggest that the 14th Amendment carves out exceptions for the children born in the US to illegally entered parents.
