Moscow Motorcyclist's Crazy High-Speed Commute

A 25-mile commute through Russian traffic and a powerful two-wheeled samurai sword, and you get a video showing the "quick" way to work. Sometimes this two-wheeler even becomes a one-wheeler as rare empty stretches of road disappear when the nose goes skyward.

Hang On !!

I ride motorcycles, am a member of the Iron Butt Association (over 1,000 miles in 24 hours) and have cruised for hours at 85-95 on the open, almost vacant, roads of the mid-west. This guy is not long for the world...it's seldom what YOU do that gets you killed...it's almost always something the other driver does that "gets you"...talking on cell phones, fiddeling with the radio, putting on make-up, reading a map...the list goes on and on....ALL these guys die eventually. you tube "ghost rider" if you want to see some 150-190 mph traffic dodging...and yep, I heard he's no longer with us. NOTHING comes close to the feeling of the open road on two wheels...I just like to keep it under 3 digits...but that's just me...I guess I really am getting old.

I went to you-tube and found this one on the ghost rider...he's legendary among the motorcycle adrenaline junkies, he routinely hits 150-180 mph in traffic...like I said, I heard he is no longer with us...don't know for sure though

Yeah. I was watching that video and thinking to myself that all he needed was just one of the people driving a car or truck to lose their concentration for just a few seconds and drift over a foot or two--and then he's a dead man. It's stupid to ride that way in traffic.

Farmfriend....THAT'S SWEET!!! And a HUGE powerplant to boot. I had mine rebuilt to 103 Cubes and I'm looking at 90 hp and 100 torque...it's a drug, isn't it. I just got back from the Outer Banks bike rally a couple weeks ago. Me and a friend went to Sturgis several years ago (1700 miles one way) and at night we'd crash out in our sleeping bags laying beside the bikes, just staring at the stars. Nothing like it. Do you ever do any of the rallies?

I did too but it wasn't a Harley. Got my Harley after that. But my chopper was something to behold and beat you to death. But pretty doesn't describe it, it was beautiful. It had a 16 over, twisted springer front end, 10 degree rake (iirc), Amen rigid frame, king and queen seat, Maltese cross mirrors and brake light and one in the sissy bar and a custom paint job. Only thing left stock on that bike was the toolbox and I had it chromed.

That sounds GORGEOUS. I had mine in HS...got it when I was 17. It was a Harley 1973 1000 sportster with a raked out front and high king/queen seat and three FABULOUS murals painted on the tank...man, I wish I'd saved that bike!! It was when AMF owned Harley and that bike would vibrate the fillings out of your teeth and it ALWAYS dripped oil. It was a bear to do long distance...but I was young and it didn't matter...all I wanted to do was ride. I remember a TV show called "Then came Bronson"...I always wanted to take a year or so off and do nothing but travel the country...almost did right after HS...almost!

I like breaking down where ever I go, and having to mend things on the the side of the road, with rudimentary hand tools, good old fashioned yankee ingenuity, and a roll of baling wire. :)

I have a 27 yo son that will most likely end up with mine. I'd love to do a road trip with him...but he LOVES speed, and that can get you killed on a bike. So, call me a hypocrite, I hope he waits till he gets this "speed" thing out of his system before he gets his own. Critter, I got to tell ya...it's about that breaking down thing...everybody as something that floats their boat, but I HATE breaking down...and have been in the "great middle of nowhere", many times, where it would have sucked large! These newer bikes are really a completely different animal than the older bikes...VERY reliable and should go 100-150k miles with care. I know my limitations...I'm not a good mechanic...but I'd sure like you along on the next trip, because it sounds like you are! So, consider yourself officially invited!

Do you ever do any of the rallies?

We get together with a group from an M-109 forum. We are meeting in Pismo Beach this week. Will be about 30 bikes and about 40 people. Last year a bunch came over from Australia, some from Canada, and they all got together down in Los Vegas. Hotel set parking aside for the bikes on the 5th floor of the parking garage. Do you know what happens to car alarms when 30 bikes go by? They should have put them on the ground floor.

We also go up to Reno from Street Vibrations. Nice ride over the hill.

Here is our friend's M-109.

I salute you.

Personally, I was prone to monkey butt on my Duel-Sport, but I've never ridden my Hog any distance. I just moved and haven't moved my bike yet, so I'll be riding about 225 miles (after diving the same distance) to get it. The saddle on my HD is a lot more comfortable than the narrow, thin one on the Duel, so wish me luck.

I'll be keeping the speedo in the 2 digit range too.

Flint...if I'm doing any distance....anything over 300-400 miles...I ALWAYS use an Airhawk seat cushion on the seat. These things are UNBELIEVABLE...it makes all the difference in the world. I spent 18 hours in the saddle the day I did the 1,000 miles...it really wasn't all that bad, but you have to be where you can average about 70 mph because you have to stop every 150 miles or so for a stretch and gas. I did it in Oct last year...if I had it to do over I would have waited for warmer nights and longer days...say like July through September. Go luck on your trip and watch out for the "cagers" they're ALL out to "get you".

It's interesting you say that, as that was my impression the first time viewing it. Thanks to the pause button, we can see his route is more like this:

He starts out on Moreland Ave and I-20, East of downtown. The first set of traffic signs are for Capital Ave., Turner Field, 75/85 North & South. He runs up the connector and then onto 75N.

Yes, I remember the 750. It was indeed a good-sized bike. I like old bikes too and if I had the money and could find one I would buy an old pan or knuck and make another chopper. I think that there is nothing much prettier than a pan or knucklehead Harley engine in a twin downtube, rigid frame (or soft tail) with a beautiful custom paint job.

Those are pics I found of a 1947 knuck which has been highly customized.

And a nice panhead on youtube:

It looks kinda like he's headed south on the 400 from time to time.

He's rolling north on 75/85. I have driven through Atlanta a lot (never on a bike though).

North on the 75-85 interchange...Spring street is south of Howell Mill so he must be rolling north...that's my guess.

Your guess would be correct. I stopped the video for the interchange signs and it clearly showed he was going north on 75/85.

Mine was pretty close to that in the front end. A very long bike and not really a good ride in the mountains but fun on a good stretch of road. But hit a bump with it at any speed and you could just about count on going airborne. No suspension to speak of in those springs on the springer. But it LOOKED good and when I was the age I was then, that was what counted, y'know?

Ok we can just agree to disagree on that one.

The Secrets of Women's Language - A must-read for any man

Keywords and their meanings:

"Fine": This is the word we use at the end of any argument that we feel we are right about but need to shut you up. NEVER use fine to describe how woman looks. This will cause you to have one of those arguments.

"Five minutes": This is half an hour. It is equivalent to the five minutes that your football game is going to last before you take out the trash, so it's an even trade.

"Nothing": This means something and you should be on your toes. "Nothing" is usually used to describe the feeling a woman has of wanting to turn you inside out, upside down, and backwards. "Nothing" usually signifies an argument that will last "Five Minutes" and end with the word "Fine".

"Go Ahead" (with raised eyebrows): This is a dare. One that will result in a woman getting upset over "Nothing" and will end with the word "Fine".

"Go Ahead" (normal eyebrows): This means "I give up" or "do what you want because I don't care". You will get a raised eyebrow "Go ahead" in just a few minutes, followed by "Nothing" and "Fine" and she will talk to you in about "Five Minutes" when she cools off.

"Loud Sigh" : This is not actually a word, but is still often a verbal statement very misunderstood by men. A "Loud Sigh" means she thinks you are an idiot at that moment and wonders why she is wasting her time standing here and arguing with you over "Nothing".

"Soft Sighs": Again, not a word, but a verbal statement. "Soft Sighs" are one of the few things that some men actually understand. She is content. Your best bet is to not move or breathe and she will stay content.

"Oh": This word followed by any statement is trouble. Example; "Oh, let me get that". Or, "Oh, I talked to him about what you were doing last night." If she says "Oh" before a statement, RUN, do not walk, to the nearest exit. She will tell you that she is "Fine" when she is done tossing your clothes out the window, but do not expect her to talk to you for at least 2 days. "Oh" as the lead to a sentence usually signifies that you are caught in a lie. Do not try to lie more to get out of it, or you will get raised eyebrows "Go ahead" followed by acts so unspeakable that we can't bring ourselves to write about them.

"That's Okay": This is one of the most dangerous statements that a woman can say to a man. "That's Okay" means that she wants to think long and hard before paying you retributions for what ever it is that you have done. "That's Okay" is often used with the word "Fine" and used in conjunction with a raised eyebrow "Go ahead". At some point in the near future when she has plotted and planned, you are going to be in some mighty big trouble.

"Please Do": This is not a statement, it is an offer. A woman is giving you the chance to come up with whatever excuse or reason you have for doing whatever it is that you have done. You have a fair chance to tell the truth, so be careful and you shouldn't get a "That's Okay".

"Thanks": A woman is thanking you. Do not faint; just say you're welcome.

"Thanks a lot": This is much different from "Thanks". A woman will say, "Thanks a lot" when she is really ticked off at you. It signifies that you have hurt her in some callous way, and will be followed by the "Loud Sigh". Be careful not to ask what is wrong after the "Loud Sigh", as she will only tell you "Nothing".

I hope this clears up any misunderstandings...

Carburetor? They phased those out in 06. I know that because I bought an 06 because I wanted one. They're less picky on fuel.

That said, who cares if the bike has some foreign parts. I'm sure the Honda does to.

The bottom line: HD is an American legend, they sound different, they ride different, they're built different, they last longer, they're the best, and the choice of the best.

my life would have been a lot less complicated with that list 20 years ago...I've got the "fine" thing figured out, and it was figured out early. When my future wife asked me one night how she looked on the way out the door, I replied "fine". I "came to" about 2 hours latter...with a crystal clear understanding that "fine", when describing how your significant other looks, would resurrect the spawn of Satan!

Even Sonny Barger quit Harley, he's on a Victory Vision because he said the amount of miles he rides each year makes a Harley worthless upon trade-in (for him). Read it in the April 2011 issue of Twisted South. That's my contribution to this thread :-)

How many cars have push rods?

they sound different,

Haven't heard a VTX have you?

they ride different,

Your right. The Honda is more comfortable with more power and less vibration.

they're built different, they last longer, they're the best,

LOL Buying an expensive brand name does not make it the best.

The rice grinder crowd is always making excuses why they bough some piece of jap crap. You saved some money? Good, spend it on leathers and tattoos so you can look like a Hog rider but remember: We're all laughing at you.

Now that is funny. I don't know ANY Honda rider that is trying to imitate ANYTHING HD. They buy their bikes not because they are cheaper, they are, but because mechanically they are better. Dependable bikes with more power, smother ride. Read the reviews for yourself.

I'll post more when I get back. Have to pick up the kid from work.

honestly...I like all bikes. But the one thing Harley definitely has over other bikes is trade-in value, even the older ones are highly sought after. 30 year old Harleys are still looked upon as an American Classic...and they are. Having said all that...ALL modern bikes are so much better made than they were 15 years ago it's really kinda pointless arguing who makes "the best". We all ride what we ride because we like to ride it. The Japanese HAVE done a wonderful job of capturing the allure of the Harley V-Twins...I think the Shadow is a GREAT looking bike...and from a distance, I have a hard time telling what's a Harley and what isn't.

...still kicking that nest....Son, you got guts!

And I'll keep kickin it until the bitch bike riders are on their knees crying for their mothers!

I've owned 8 bikes in my life and I've been riding since I was 15 (only got run over once)

1 - Puch
2 - Yamaha's
1 - Honda
2 - Suzuki's
1 - Kawasaki
1 - HD

Now, I've never ridden more than about 300 miles in a day but I've ridden in 3 countries on 2 continents. I've ridden everything from dirt trails to perfectly paved roads. I know what lasts, what breaks and what wears out.

Without a doubt, the HD is the finest road machine I have ever mounted. I can't comment on the other American made bikes nor the Euro-peon stuff, but I'm still waiting to see a jap bike with 30,000 miles on it that's not ready for the scrap heap.

And yeah, I know all about the high milage Gold Wings. If I wanted to pull a trailer, I'd buy a convertible.

but I'm still waiting to see a jap bike with 30,000 miles on it that's not ready for the scrap heap.

I've got 34k on my HD and the only thing I've needed was a stader. I'd jump on that bike tonight and ride to the Pacific ocean and back and never worry about a break down...that's a fact.

Me too, but when you pull up at a light you can hear the difference and they won't look you in the eye.

That's funny but true...I rode to Sturgis with a buddy that rides a big Yamaha...he was completely decked out in Harley garb. I ribbed him about it for 4,000 miles.

Kinda early in the year for Austin, for that kind of heat.?

Spent one frikking hot week in LLano while ago - thought it was getting close to death temperatures.

My Yamaha buddy often refers to "moving up" to a Harley...He'll be the first to say he wants one. He rode mine one day and said the difference was unbelievable. I know I've put loads of miles on mine, had many 500 mile plus days and I've never thought, boy, I wish I had something else.

width of the tire is a good clue.

maybe, but my FXSTC has a wide 200 back tire and a skinny 21 inch front tire so tire width isn't such a great guide anymore. The bike in the 2nd video is really nice.

Mine's coming up on 40 years old, and it's getting refreshed again so it can keep putting along for another 10 or 12 years. Got all the sheet metal off it tonight and sanded off the old paint. Tomorrow the heads and jugs come off for a fresh top end. Next weekend the paint should be done, in two weeks she'll be good as new, once again. :)

BTW, have you seen the new rice grinder accessory pack?

It's mandatory for the average Hog hating grinder rider

1 - Mesh safety vest to let the world know you're a bitch at heart

2 - Helmet, the bigger the better

3 - Soap-on-a-rope

4 - Scissors to cut the rope (Safety Scissors preferred)

You hog riders think very highly of yourselves don't you. Just about every person I see riding a Japanese cruiser ride them for several reasons, none of which includes being gay or "metro-sexual".

The reasons are;

  1. They're relatively inexpensive to buy and maintain
  2. They look good
  3. They ride and handle well
  4. They have a good amount of power
  5. The people who ride them don't need that Harley-Davidson logo to make themselves feel like "real men"

A lot of Harley riders are pretty decent folks too, although there are some stuck up snobs who think just because they ride a Harley, they're super cool. Such people apparently have a self esteem issue, and need a big expensive bike to boost their egos and feel important. That, and they think it helps them score with chicks.

I happen to like Harley's, but anything that gets you out of a "cage" and lets you smell the air and feel the wind works for me. But seriously...Harley's ARE a chick magnet...everyone that rides one finds that out real quick...LOL

don't put any money on that bet...mine pulls like a freight train at 110 and has loads of speed left in it...that six speed lets you cruise all day at 100 plus...I personally don't like crusing at much over 80...but out West, we'd cruise between 85-95 for miles.

One news paper article I read had the headline as "8 Hours of Hell". From the article it looks like things were pretty much out of control for a while...I'll bet that's the end of bike week at Myrtle Beach...we'll see.

Uh huh. Asshole.

I ride a Hog cause it's the best road bike and they last....period.

Most people I know who've owned Harley's are constantly fixing them, and spend as much money in "upgrading" the bike to make it work the way it's supposed to work as they spent buying it new.

Not only that, but from what I've read, Harley Davidson service sucks ass where they usually fuck up the bike worse than it was when it came to the shop, charge an arm and a leg, and take months to perform a two hour fix.

And like I said, it's pretty obvious that there are some who buy Harleys because they need it to feel like a "big man".

After a little reading, just about EVERY HD part is made in CHINA since 2005. They are only assembled in the US, everything else is made in China or Mexico.

On the other hand, the Honda VTX is made in Ohio from 100% US MADE parts.

Most people I know who've owned Harley's are constantly fixing them,

I've had no problems with mine. I did have to buy a new tire, a new battery and do the 5,000 mile servicing when I bought it.

It was all figured into my buying price and except for the battery, had it done by a HD dealer. (I did buy a HD AGM battery). I could have saved some money by having the work done by one of the numerous non HD shops that specialize in "American Motorcycles"

Next time I will.

Maybe not EVERY part, but OVER 50% comes from China and elsewhere. Did you know your shocks are made by Honda?

Look up "Harley Davidson parts made in China", it'll make your "it's made in the USA" bubble burst.

There's a reason they can't say "Made in the USA" anymore, and have to say something like "proudly assembled in the USA"...
