hoping it will draw attention to the system's abuses.

It won't, the system only cares when one of it's own becomes a casualty. They then use that event to try to take away more of our rights.

If this guy had whacked the judge then doused himself, he would have been front page, nationally. As it stands, he didn't make my local paper.

A "martyr"? Hardly. A guy who has kids then refuses to pay for their support after bloodying his 4 year old daughter's lip. He caused his own problems. I think Isaaih 5:20 would sum up the absurdity of labeling this guy as a "martyr".

I'd be curious as to how many people on 4um would label tom ball as a "victim"/ "martyr".Of course, a case last year comes to mind when many on 4um lauded a homosexual man who wrote a rambling suicide letter & couldnt pay his bills as a folk hero, so...

E.g., the guy that flew a plane into the IRS building in Texas last year. Though I don't quite recall his name.

If you read his letter, he maintains the lip bloodying was very overblown, and occurred while administering a minimal amount of discipline. As for payments, he outlined the huge financial hardship the ordeal caused not only him but his wife and kids, even if he were able to make the payments (after being out of work for 2 years).

He cited statistical information very evenhandedly that to me demonstrated a very logical, objective mind.

I believe his name was Joe (or Joseph) Stack.

edited to add this:

It is rare indeed when suicide accomplishes its intended result. How many people have ever heard of Terence MacSwiney or remember the name of Bobby Sands? They both fasted to the death and I doubt there is one person in one hundred thousand who even remember Bobby Sands and his fast to the death was not all that long ago (1981).

MacSwiney died after seventy three days of fasting (in 1920) and Bobby Sands made it sixty six days.

Terence MacSwiney & Bobby Sands are well known to students of the Irish Independence movement.

But how many people remember Orland McCafferty? He hardly got three lines in any newspaper. In February 1986, he set himself afire in the park across the street from the White House, evidently distraught over the terrible effects of the Reagan economy on his farm and hometown (I think in Iowa). The Secret Service had him taken to a hospital, where he died within a few hours; he left behind a letter for Reagan, which the SS confiscated and I doubt Reagan ever saw it or was told about it. He was the first (and, as far as I know, the only) suicide in that park.

good info.ive read various forum discussions on this & many point out that real men do not fill w/ self pity & rob kids of their father in an insane gruesome act.Of course the system's corrupt. But it sad that so many laud this awful impotent response.

Somehow I don't think that negates my point. Said point being, ask the random man (or woman) on the street what they know about either of those men and you will, more likely than not, get a blank stare.

As for the Reagan economy, it sure looks good compared to what we have now with the Kenyan at the helm.

Yes. I don't think the man was a hero for taking his own life and depriving his child (ren) of their dad. Children are impressionable and they always wonder about things they really had no control over and think it is their fault. That's a big load to put on a child.

Maybe he had a life insurance policy that would take care of them, and that was part of the plan.

Not that that makes his suicide much better morally.

If he really was a good and loving father no amount of money could ever replace him. And, if the children are young enough, they could take that burden on themselves thinking that maybe it was somehow their fault that dad killed himself. And too, he ended any chance he may have had to effect some positive change and to turn things around by taking his life. As someone once said, suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.
