80 Crashes Reported Along Indy Interstates

INDIANAPOLIS -- Monday's blinding snow caught many by surprise, including highway salt crews, but state transportation officials said the same mistake won't be made come Super Bowl time.

State police worked 80 crashes across the metro area Monday afternoon, including one on Interstate 465 involving at least 12 vehicles.

Indiana Department of Transportation spokesman Harry Maginity said the agency was behind the storm, RTV6's Chance Walser reported.

"We didn't know where it was coming up next. Mainly, it came up on the south side, but we were dispatching trucks," he said. "We were behind it trying to catch up with it."

INDOT considered pre-treating the highways, but Maginity said it was decided that, based on the weather conditions, it wouldn't help.

The Indianapolis Department of Public Works did make the call to pre-treat roads and didn't share in Monday's interstate traffic tie ups.

"I think what really helped us is that we were able to be out on the roads so early in the morning. We started at 7 a.m.," said spokeswoman Kara Brooks.

Looking ahead 33 days until the Super Bowl, both INDOT and DPW officials said crews will be on high alert.

INDOT has promised to assist in downtown snow removal if necessary and the highways will get help from other districts around the state.

"The Super Bowl is a totally different situation," Maginity said. "We're going to be very intense along the routes from the airports and travel routes like that. We'll be on full alert."

Boring until you consider we got like 1/2 inch of snow. Most of it already blew away or melted.

At least my car has a nice protective layer of salt.

Thanks guys, really.

We only got a little bit of lake effect snow yesterday, probably less than an inch, but goddamn were the roads ever slick before about 11am. It was as slick as black ice but white.

Probably them eeevil Eye-Ray-Neons & their nukes.
