You may think you speak "Standard English straight out of the dictionary" but when you step away from the Great Lakes you get asked annoying questions like "Are you from Wisconsin?" or "Are you from Chicago?" Chances are you call carbonated drinks "pop."

I've lived in TX for 65 years.

From the ST Louis area.

The south, for some reason.

Somebody ought to tell the truth about the Bible. The preachers dare not, because they would be driven from their pulpits. Professors in colleges dare not, because they would lose their salaries. Politicians dare not. They would be defeated. Editors dare not. They would lose subscribers. Merchants dare not, because they might lose customers. Men of fashion dare not, fearing that they would lose caste. Even clerks dare not, because they might be discharged. And so I thought I would do it myself... Robert Ingersoll

Pop is a carbonated drink. Soda is a powdered ingredient you use to make baked goods, ya dumb crackers.

Results for me:

What American accent do you have? Your Result: Philadelphia

Your accent is as Philadelphian as a cheesesteak! If you're not from Philadelphia, then you're from someplace near there like south Jersey, Baltimore, or Wilmington. if you've ever journeyed to some far off place where people don't know that Philly has an accent, someone may have thought you talked a little weird even though they didn't have a clue what accent it was they heard.

I was born in the midwest, but raised in the SouthEast part of the U.S. I'm a Southern Belle. How strange that I would have an Upper East Coast accent.

What American accent do you have?

Your Result: North Central

"North Central" is what professional linguists call the Minnesota accent. If you saw "Fargo" you probably didn't think the characters sounded very out of the ordinary. Outsiders probably mistake you for a Canadian a lot.

Yeah, right. I actually know what a Maryland accent sounds like. Something like a cross between Philly and Taxachusetts. Hee, hee.

What American accent do you have?
Your Result: The Midland

"You have a Midland accent" is just another way of saying "you don't have an accent." You probably are from the Midland (Pennsylvania, southern Ohio, southern Indiana, southern Illinois, and Missouri) but then for all we know you could be from Florida or Charleston or one of those big southern cities like Atlanta or Dallas. You have a good voice for TV and radio.

The Inland North

North Central

The West

The South

Philadelphia

Boston

The Northeast

No, no, no. Inland North is the one that don't have a accent.

That's what I speak.

I'm from the exact same area as you and some people tell me I have a southern accent. I tell them it's Midwestern.

That's a Southern accent you've got there. You may love it, you may hate it, you may swear you don't have it, but whatever the case, we can hear it.

Not so accurate for me. I'm California born and raised (except for teen years spent in Europe) but it lists me as "Inland North". Maybe that IS the California accent?

Soda

Where I'm from it is called "sodee" and "wash" is pronounced "worsh." I broke myself of saying them when I was 20. A woman said "What?" when I asked what kind of sodee they had.

Yes, I do get asked if I'm from Wisconsin but I don't call carbonated drinks "pop" and I've never been to the Great Lakes or Chicago.....lol

Born in New Orleans, moved to Buffalo, NY when I was two then I moved to Texas when I was 14. I have a midwestern type accent. I call a pen a pen not a "writting pin" and I end words like talking with an "ing" not an "in" like your born and raised southerner.
