My little foster hound passed away today. It was completely unexpected. I had gotten her dental work done and cleared up an infection she had. She was going for walks daily and generally very happy. Even her blood work was great.
Then this morning she had no appetite and then an accident on her bed. Then another accident on her second bed. So, I moved her to the kitchen. Her hind legs did not want to work for her. This alarmed me so I was preparing to take her to the vet. Then, her breathing became very labored and then she stopped breathing.
The vet said that she had a blood clot and a stroke. Just like that. Fine one day and gone the next. I knew that she was an old hound, but she was doing so well. I held her in my arms as she slipped away.

Thank you James. We were getting accustomed to having her around and I'm still a little in shock over it. My almost ten year old is taking it very hard as she has lost three dogs in the past seven months.

My condolences. For people who do not know the love of animals, our friends, they do not understand how we can care, but we do. Wishing you well and that your friend journeys safely to the other side of the Rainbow:

I'm very sorry abraxas. If it was her time to go, perhaps this was more merciful, in going so quickly? Most often illnesses are long, drawn out affairs ending with a shot from the vet, which is a difficult thing for a pet owner to decide. You were spared this decision. Or perhaps she wasn't that old yet and should have had enough quality years left to not be an issue?
We have a dog also and she's very much part of the family.

So sorry to hear about your little hound, abraxas.
Haven't cried since I was a kid except when my elders passed, but I shed tears when our Jack Russell left us last year.
It's incredible how close we get to these canine creatures.

Thank you OI......I talked her over the rainbow bridge today. In a sense feel I was able to repay a debt since I was in MT when my sweet Hannah passed away in July and felt terrible that I was not there to hold her and guide her over.

Thank you for your kind words Pinguinite....
I knew it was necessary to be thankful for whatever time I had with her and to give her the best that I could since the day I picked her up to foster. She was almost 12, which is long in the tooth for greyhounds. But, she really had quite a bit of energy so I sort of convinced myself that we had at least a year.....but we just never know. I am thankful that she went quickly and rather peacefully.

I have lost two animal friends that I was especially close to (not that I haven't loved all my pets, I have). But a dog we had one time, one who just came and adopted us and would have fought a bear for any of us, who just disappeared one day. Now he may have just gone off and died, I don't know but not knowing made it even harder. I offered a 1,000 dollar reward for him which was just about every penny I had and someone asked me if he was a show dog or something. I told him no, he was my friend and it would be all the same to me if I had a million, I would give it to get him back. And the same with a bird I lost one time. One of the sweetest most loving cockatoos that ever lived and it ripped my heart out when I lost her. I know it doesn't seem like it right now but the pain gets easier. I am not saying it will ever completely leave but it will get better.

Thank you James....it is true some are harder to lose than others. Some we always miss too. My little dog Sally that I had when I was little is like that. I can still mist up when I think of her.
I have heard that birds can forge extremely close bonds with humans and that the bird usually just likes one person best.....for that cockatoo, you were the one. : )

Yeah, if she was sitting on my shoulder and she thought someone was getting too close to us she would warn them by hissing at them. But she was just bluffing, I don't think she would have ever intentionally hurt anyone.

Sorry to read this.
I lost my sixteen year old best friend this past August. It still hurts me. I've had dog dreams. We had a happy life together and I wish I could focus on that part. I knew it would happen one day.

It still hurts me. I've had dog dreams. We had a happy life together and I wish I could focus on that part.

Thank you Fred. I know just how you feel. I have dog dreams too since I lost my best friend in July. In fact, I had one about a week ago and I woke up feeling so good because I had been hugging her. I miss her everyday.

I feel your pain at your sudden unexpected loss of your pet. I had mothered a mother, father and six baby kittens and in addition four baby stray kittens (because their mother abandoned them). At first these kitties would hiss at me but after coming to trust me would only come to me.
My landlord would throw pebbles at the cats so I fed them in secret. The kittens passed away due to a flea collar which they could not tolerate. When I found them dead, I cried for hours. I will not ever put a flea collar on a kitten again. I think of them every so now and then. They are not forgotten. In fact, I dreamt of one of them in my dream the other day. I believe it was one of the grown up kitties that got nipped by a pit bull. When I saw that kitty standing on a fence looking at me for the last time, I knew it was going somewhere to die.

Thank you Critter. It is so hard to have to make that choice. I feel for you. Layla went quickly and on her own yesterday, that is a blessing. When my other greyhound Hannah had to be put down in July it was heart wrenching, but it was much more peaceful than seeing her suffer any longer as her kidneys had finally shut down. I miss her everyday.

They would have survived had I not put that darn flea collar on them. A friend made the suggestion that I put the collar on. That will not ever happen again to another kitty. I hope they are in kitty heaven. I miss them dearly. :(
