As per Drudge, RP just quit the race. I was taken yet again.
Cyni, this is directed to you. You nailed it from the get go, and I got suckered.
I bow to you and accept my heaping portion of crow served anyway you care to deliver it to me.
Ron Paul 'Goes Galt': Quits Presidential Race but Hopes to Turn Tide
Like John Galt, the fictional hero of Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged, Republican presidential contender Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) has quit the mainstream of American political life--only to plot a return as a revolutionary hero for the cause of liberty. Paul has announced that he is suspending his campaign, but will keep trying to win delegates in state contests that will allow him maximum leverage at this summer's Republican National Convention. In an email to supporters, Paul wrote:
This campaign fought hard and won electoral success that the talking heads and pundits never thought possible. But, this campaign is also about more than just the 2012 election. It has been part of a quest I began 40 years ago and that so many have joined. It is about the campaign for Liberty, which has taken a tremendous leap forward in this election and will continue to grow stronger in the future until we finally win.
Our campaign will continue to work in the state convention process. We will continue to take leadership positions, win delegates, and carry a strong message to the Republican National Convention that Liberty is the way of the future.
Moving forward, however, we will no longer spend resources campaigning in primaries in states that have not yet voted. Doing so with any hope of success would take many tens of millions of dollars we simply do not have. I encourage all supporters of Liberty to make sure you get to the polls and make your voices heard, particularly in the local, state, and Congressional elections, where so many defenders of Freedom are fighting and need your support.
As he had done in 2008, Paul used the Republican nominating process--especially the debates--to advocate for libertarian economic ideals and an isolationist foreign policy. The latter posture endeared him to the mainstream media, who continued to use his positions as a foil against other Republicans.
Paul's organization has been particularly effective and enthusiastic in state delegate contests, so his influence on the Republican party platform--and the vice-presidential nomination stakes--could be significant. Speculation that he might split from the GOP to mount an independent presidential bid were never borne out, and may have been pre-empted by Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson's attempt to do the same.

Ron decided long ago to DO NO HARM TO THE FUTURE OF RAND PAUL.
That entailed no third party run, AND NO HARM TO THE REPUBLICAN PARTY.
Now the republican party will be beholden to Ron.
It is politics at its best backroom style.
Trying to paper over this withdrawal is futile and foolish.
While I somewhat agree I disagree with the motivations you are assigning to RP.
I still go back to the South Carolina Debate in the last (s)Election as that was the turning point. The entire tenor of his campaign changed from that point forward. If you look for a reason now for his behavior it is not in present time you will not find one - it is back in SC (or that time frame). I don't know what he was threatened with but it was convincing. It is possible that a Senatorial seat for Rand was offered to make things less bitter, but I am convinced that was NOT the reason for the change. The reason there will be no third party run is because of a threat or threats unknown. Threats so overwhelming that he would not dare mention them in public. It would be pointless anyway as a third party candidate, as it stands now, will not ever be allowed to win.
I do not know how it was done but I am convinced that he was threatened with something that he could not counter - likely the lives of loved ones from a source that he knew could, and would, make good on the threats. And it was from that point that his focus shifted and he ceased being a serious candidate as he knew he would not be allowed to win and that if he made enough noise that people close to him would have "accidents".

as i posted to christine this morning before paul's trotsky2 speech.. did ya'll see that Paul had breakfast with bernanke last week and declined to say what was discussed?

Frankly, I don't think he should speak with Bernanke except "very" publicly.
I feel badly for those supporting him though I can't say I blame them too much. It's hard for people not to get excited about someone touting freedom that has a record of championing it. The thing is that he never made an ounce of difference as far as the agenda is/was concerned - he simply kept those intelligent enough to seek a legitimate change by legitimate means in the game for one more fake-ass election cycle.
The fact that he and his campaign advisors "chose" to make this completely unnecessary statement about quitting the primaries almost makes me sick to my stomach because it makes me think the worst about him. Right before the Texas primary, where he may well have kicked Romney's ass - he forfeits.
I recall the Trotski memo four years ago, the majority of the faithful denied reality.
Paul wants to keep as many supporters as possible to be used for leverage at the convention. Too many abandon ship and Ron will be all alone at Tampa. He is not dumb.
I agree, that is why he has not suspended anything... The media has reported one thing and folks were quick to believe a lying ass media that they consistently rag on everyday.
"Moving forward, however, we will no longer spend resources campaigning in primaries in states that have not yet voted. ........Doing so with any hope of success would take many tens of millions of dollars we simply do not have........
Like the Trotski memo, people need to take Paul at his word.
Paul has moved on, his supporters also need to do the same.
In 2008 after the Trotski memo, many supporters continued to cling to hope, that what Paul said was not real. It was very real, he dumped us in mid stream.
Many of his supporters could not vote for McKook, so Obongo became president. Will this happen once again?
When the Pied Piper stops playing, the parade is over.
I will not vote for either under any forseeable circumstance. The Constipation Party and the LP have been neutered so there is no viable third party that stands the chance of the proverbial snowball in hell.
The "system" wins once again.
Yes and no. Yes their "boy" will be Preznit but it will not be a clean win. There are more and more people who are stirred up and seeing how the game is rigged. I do not yet know what effect that will have, but there is a Joker in the deck.
