This week, Congress is considering two pieces of legislation relating to Iran. The first undermines a diplomatic solution with Iran and lowers the bar for war. The second authorizes a war of choice against Iran and begins military preparations for it. H.Res.568: Eliminating the Most Viable Alternative to War – The House is expected to vote on H.Res. 568. Read the resolution. Section (6) rejects any United States policy that would rely on efforts to contain a nuclear weapons-capable Iran. Section (7) urges the President to reaffirm the unacceptability of an Iran with nuclear-weapons capability and opposition to any policy that would rely on containment as an option in response to Iranian enrichment.

This language represents a significant shift in U.S. policy and would guarantee that talks with Iran, currently scheduled for May 23, would fail. Current U.S. policy is that Iran cannot acquire nuclear weapons. Instead, H. Res. 568 draws the “redline” for military action at Iran achieving a nuclear weapons “capability,” a nebulous and undefined term that could include a civilian nuclear program. Indeed, it is likely that a negotiated deal to prevent a nuclear-armed Iran and to prevent war would provide for Iranian enrichment for peaceful purposes under the framework of the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons Treaty with strict safeguards and inspections.

This language makes such a negotiated solution impossible. At the same time, the language lowers the threshold for attacking Iran. Countries with nuclear weapons “capability” could include many other countries like Japan or Brazil. It is an unrealistic threshold.

The Former Chief of Staff of Secretary of State Colin Powell has stated that this resolution “reads like the same sheet of music that got us into the Iraq war.” H.R. 4310: Authorizing War Against Iran and Preparing the Military for it. While H. Res. 568 undermines our diplomatic efforts and lowers the bar for war, H.R. 4310, the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2013 begins military preparations for war. Section 1221 makes military action against Iran a U.S. policy. Section 1222 directs our armed forces to prepare for war.

Done deal. Inching closer every day. By the minute now.

House Bill Shifting Red Line for War on Iran Passes Overwhelmingly
The bill calls for a military strike if Iran obtains nuclear "capability"
by John Glaser, May 17, 2012

Print This | Share This

A bill in the House of Representatives has just been passed which inches the United States dangerously close to war with Iran just days ahead of a second round of diplomatic talks with Iran about its nuclear program.

The vote, passed 401-11, effectively calls for a military attack on Iran when it obtains a “nuclear weapons capability” – an undefined term that, by some interpretations, could already apply to Iran, not to mention Brazil, Japan, the Netherlands, and any other country with a civilian nuclear program.

“Current U.S. policy is that Iran cannot acquire nuclear weapons,” said Dennis Kucinch (D-Ohio), one of the few who voted against the bill. “Instead, H.Res. 568 draws the red line for military action at Iran achieving a nuclear weapons capability, a nebulous and undefined term that would include a civilian nuclear program.”

The shifting of the so-called “red-line” is instructive. Hawkish rhetoric for some time now has been that Iran is developing nuclear weapons and this provides a pretext for war unless we can reverse their course. The problem is that this rhetoric is not true: the U.S. military and intelligence community are in consensus that Iran has no nuclear weapons program.

And so the red-line shifted to include something Iran is doing, namely enriching uranium for peaceful purposes. Some argue that the Iranian government simply having the know-how for building nukes is enough to attack it, but that is an absurd justification for war if for no other reason that knowledge doesn’t amount to an imminent threat. The attack would therefore be a war of aggression - one without the justification for self-defense - which international law designates a serious war crime.

Col. Lawrence Wilkerson, former Chief of Staff for Secretary of State Colin Powell, warned “This resolution reads like the same sheet of music that got us into the Iraq war, and could be the precursor for a war with Iran….it’s effectively a thinly-disguised effort to bless war.”

I have been trying to wake people up, but they don't think much of me I guess and don't listen. I pray God will stop this war. It is bound to be the worst the world has ever seen.

randge...

For months I have wanted Ron Paul to relegate the Fed to a minor role in his campaign and take up an anti war stance, with a club that American masses understand.

For instance the Founding Fathers gave us the relief from just such a heinous vote by the HOUSE.

If we really are anti war, in one fell swoop we could remove every last one of them that are war mongers in Nov.

Paul would have to have had fire in his gut but to me he could have just maybe staved off this coming shame on America.

That vote count is shameful but it tells us who has a strangle hold on our government.

I do not believe there will be war. The idea Americans will accept it is not true. There is always that tipping point, and the country is right on the edge.

I sense a disturbance in the farce. Much gnashing will ensue.

Well, God willing you are right & 'Yahoo and this fellow fundi nuts, Jew and Christian, here and over there, are engaged in one huge bluff designed to bull the Iranians into submission.

While it's not characteristic of Izzy to telegraph its punches, I have the strong sense from everything I've read Iran leaders say that they are not going to back off an inch.

If the mullah state refuses to back down at all in the coming talks, Izzy must do something or lose face.

That's what has me worried.

Exactly. Israel's "air of invincibility" is one of their biggest psychological weapons. They have half of the planet intimidated into silence over their Nazi-like behavior.

I have come increasingly to despise more and more the raving psychotics who are running that shitty little state. Evil is almost too mild of a word to describe their behavior. Calculated evil comes close but it is an evil so insane as to turn the stomach of a decent caring individual. It is so repellent as to cause the weak to turn away afraid to look at the reality. Foul does not even come close as they have taken foulness to a whole new depth.

Americans For Peace

peacenow.org/pages/history.html

The Israeli Peace Now movement, Shalom Achshav, was established in 1978, when 348 Israeli senior reserve army officers and combat soldiers came together to urge their government to sign a peace treaty with Egypt. They knew then what remains true today – real security for Israel can be achieved only through peace. In the years since its establishment Shalom Achshav has worked for the achievement of peace agreements between Israel and all her Arab neighbors, and has come to be recognized, both in Israel and abroad, as Israel’s leading grassroots, Zionist movement. Best known for mobilizing mass demonstrations, for many years Shalom Achshav has also been the only group conducting comprehensive monitoring of Israeli settlement activity in the West Bank (and the Gaza Strip, until Israel’s 2004 evacuation of Gaza settlements). Shalom Achshav is widely cited in the Israeli and international media as the foremost authority on settlements.

Americans for Peace Now (APN) was established in 1981 to mobilize support for the Israeli peace movement, Shalom Achshav (Peace Now), and has since developed into the most prominent American Jewish, Zionist organization working to achieve a comprehensive political settlement to the Arab-Israeli conflict.

We are the leading voice of American Jews who support Israel and know that only peace will ensure Israel’s security, prosperity and continued viability as a Jewish, democratic state. Positions advocated for more than two decades by APN and Shalom Achshav – like calling for the evacuation of settlements and the creation of a viable Palestinian state – are now recognized by most American Jews and Israelis as basic requirements both for peace and for a secure future for Israel.

APN is a non-partisan organization with a non-partisan mission. We supply timely information and education, providing a pro-Israel, pro-peace, American Jewish perspective on issues and legislation. APN also engages in grassroots political activism and outreach to the American Jewish and Arab American communities, opinion leaders, university students and the public at large. We further promote our agenda through press releases, editorials and personal contacts with journalists, serving as a respected source of balanced information, analysis, and commentary.

Aid to the Palestinians

U.S. aid plays an important role in building a Palestinian society ready and able to live, as a state, side-by-side with Israel in peace and with security. Today, the U.S. provides funding for, among other things, humanitarian projects, civil society programs, and training to bolster Palestinian moderate leadership and enable the PA to continue to build its security capacity. It supports the ongoing efforts led by Palestinian Prime Minister Salaam Fayyad to build Palestinian institutions capable of becoming the infrastructure of a future Palestinian state. U.S. aid also has an important multiplier effect, with other countries viewing U.S. aid as a positive signal that they, too, should provide assistance.

U.S. law has long barred direct assistance to the Palestinian Authority (PA), unless the President determines that such assistance is necessary for U.S. national security. In this case, the law then requires extensive reporting to Congress on how the funds are used and accounted for. Otherwise, U.S. assistance is provided directly to the Palestinian people through non-governmental organizations. Here, too, Congress has over the years piled on an ever-increasing number of far-reaching conditions and oversight requirements on all such assistance.

Today, assistance to the Palestinians is arguably the most conditioned, restricted, audited, and monitored U.S. aid program in the world.

APN supports continued assistance to the Palestinians and believes it is vital that Congress leave intact the President's authority to waive restrictions on aid to the PA, as he deems necessary and with proper reporting to Congress. APN rejects efforts to add gratuitous new conditions, restrictions, and oversight requirements to Palestinian assistance, and urges Americans and their elected officials to recognize the difference between legitimate accountability concerns and over-burdensome requirements that undermine the aid program altogether.

Thanks. Every now and then, as I force myself to look at the true depths of evil raging across our world, I simply can no longer hold back my outrage and disgust.

And I agree. The delusional Kristyun Fundamentalists are neither Christian nor fundamental. They flout openly their support of evil and call it Godliness to do the devil's bidding. They justify and excuse every crime against humanity committed by the secular Rothschild State and call it Christian as they trample upon the decency and humanity which Christ taught. They would call evil good and opposition to that evil somehow flouts their perversion of Christianity - a religion which entered this world preaching decency, honesty, and love of ones fellow man and yet they chant for death supporting torture and all manner of foul abominations. And in their perversely deluded state they think that for some strange reason that a just and loving God will raise them up to an exalted status because of their support of the foulest of evils while mouthing the right phrases which they do not practice.

Christian Zionists are not Christians. These groups actually tell their members not to talk to Jews about Jesus because it will upset them.

Remember, Hagee said Jesus never told Jews he was the Son of God nor the Messiah so they have an automatic ticket to Heaven.

That's why I call them Kristyuns because they are NOT Christians.

Hagee is a tool of evil selling his soul for mere silver.

As for the Kristyuns who follow him they are the minions of evil and in their perversions they call evil good and somehow think that all of the evil they support with their words and their money will somehow buy them a ticket to the Rupture. Sometimes I wish them all to be consumed in the burning flames they visit upon others.

I have been watching RT [Russia Today] on tv. They have been reporting on a "Parents Circle", families on both sides [Israeli and Palestinian], who have lost loved ones in the conflict, and who have come together seeking reconciliation and an end to war. Their voice has fallen on deaf ears as well.

this is a good article, but here is another one I saw yesterday which explains the situation more clearly, regarding H.R. 568 and H.R. 4310, the National Defense Authorization Act

Rep. Kucinich: H.R. 568 and NDAA Pave Way for Iran Attack http://www.prisonplanet.com/rep-kucinich-h-r-568-and-ndaa- pave-way-for-iran- attack.html
“A plain reading of these provisions in H.R. 4310 taken together with H.R. 568 makes it clear: Congress is setting the stage for war with Iran,” he warns.

Add to that the recent H.R. 4133: United States-Israel Enhanced Security Cooperation Act of 2012, which passed the house 411-2. And these disgusting cretins are supposedly representing the American people?

I read over part of 4310 which i had not seen before. The attention it got at the time was all focused on how it would allow the govt to kidnap american citizens without trial. Perhaps that was largely for distraction purposes.

http://democrats.rules.house.gov/112/text/112_hr4310_txt.pdf

Subtitle C—Matters Relating to Iran SEC. 1221. DECLARATION OF POLICY. (a) FINDINGS.—Congress makes the following find ings: (1) Iran, which has long sought to foment in stability and promote extremism in the Middle East, is now seeking to exploit the dramatic political tran sition underway in the region to undermine govern ments traditionally aligned with the United States and support extremist political movements in these countries. (2) At the same time, Iran may soon attain a nuclear weapons capability, a development that would threaten United States interests, destabilize the region, encourage regional nuclear proliferation, further empower and embolden Iran, the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism, and provide it the tools to threaten its neighbors, including Israel. (3) With the assistance of Iran over the past several years, Syria, Hezbollah, and Hamas have in creased their stockpiles of rockets, with more than 60,000 rockets now ready to be fired at Israel. Iran continues to add to its arsenal of ballistic missiles and cruise missiles, which threaten Iran’s neighbors, Israel, and United States Armed Forces in the region. (4) Preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon is among the most urgent national security challenges facing the United States. (5) Successive United States administrations have stated that an Iran armed with a nuclear weapon is unacceptable. (6) President Obama stated on January 24, 2012, ‘‘Let there be no doubt: America is deter mined to prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon, and I will take no options off the table to achieve that goal.’’. (7) In order to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, the United States, in cooperation with its allies, must utilize all elements of national power including diplomacy, robust economic sanc tions, and credible, visible preparations for a military option. (8) Nevertheless, to date, diplomatic overtures, sanctions, and other non-kinetic actions toward Iran have not caused the Government of Iran to abandon its nuclear weapons program. (9) With the impact of additional sanctions uncertain, additional pressure on the Government of Iran could come from the credible threat of military action against Iran’s nuclear program. (b) DECLARATION OF POLICY.—It shall be the policy of the United States to take all necessary measures, including military action if required, to prevent Iran from threatening the United States, its allies, or Iran’s neighbors with a nuclear weapon.

This little reminder of his part in the stage play leading up to war negates any shot at credibility when he pretends to be on the side of truth and peace now.

Even though there were rumblings that he was a reluctant participant then, unless he stands up and spills secrets learned when he was in huddle with Bush and Condi, he's a long way from rehabilitated and believable now.

I remember those rumblings. In fact I remember him saying he was used. But imo no one in that position is used unless they want to be used. That was just an excuse he used when he was confronted with the lies he told. He had to try and shift the blame to others.

Propaganda is all scripted and planned meticulously to have the effect desired on the citizens. He had to know it was an act, and he played the role.

He could have put a stop to it all, during his "testimony", if he had any balls. I didn't see anyone with a gun pointed at his head as he sat there holding up that little vial of flour.

I think they are all beyond rehabilitation. They just need to be hung as war criminals and their bodies thrown in a swamp. Gators gotta eat too. That's what I'd do to them, all of them.
