VATICAN CITY — Just months after becoming the first pontiff in nearly 600 years to resign, reports are surfacing that Emeritus Pope Benedict XVI is in poor health with diminished stature and energy.

After a brief hiatus at the papal summer residence in Castel Gandolfo, Benedict returned to live in a converted monastery on the edge of the Vatican gardens last month. Already, some of his visitors have commented on the former pope's physical deterioration.

"Benedict is in a very bad way," said Paloma Gomez Borerro, a veteran Vatican correspondent for Spain's Telecino who visited the former pope in late May. "We won't have him with us much longer."

Benedict is now 86 years old, and admitted when he announced his abdication that he was in deteriorating condition. It may be that he knew, but chose to keep private, some particular medical condition that is hastening that deterioration.

He chose to leave the papacy with the cardinals and the rest of the Curia having enough forewarning to make for a smooth and well-planned transition, instead of persisting on as a bedridden wreck unable to discharge his papal functions for a year or more, and then die on a random date, leaving a slapdash hastily convened election for a successor. Not a bad idea in this age when people (Popes included) can be kept alive for years after they cease to function.
