When Brian Bone had started working as a patrol officer in the Lake County sheriff’s office near Chicago, his boyish 21-year-old looks meant he was often used as a decoy in sting operations. He would help nab online predators who showed up for “dates” they had arranged with someone they thought would be their next young victim.

Bone — the lead American investigator in Project Spade, who played a key role in working with Toronto police in uncovering the worldwide child porn network — says he was also a “natural at computers.”

So he quickly went from undercover work on the street to forensic investigations on the web, cracking codes and tracking down child abusers online.

In 2006, he helped Toronto police break up an international child porn ring that operated a “KiddyPics” secret web chat room, leading to the arrest of dozens of people in Canada and the United States.

Bone then transferred to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, rising to become the program manager of a 50-member team specializing in fighting child exploitation.

At 31, he has seen often graphic abuse and pain, yet the level of suffering among child victims he uncovered in Project Spade never fails to unnerve him.

“You have to (feel) some kind of shock, no matter how long you have been doing it,” he says. “You’d like to think this doesn’t happen.

“I feel personal satisfaction because the cases we are working are getting better and better in the sense that we are catching the higher offenders, we are not going after the low-lying fruit,” he says.

The alleged child predators he pursues keep deploying more and more sophisticated techniques of encryption and online stealth, but Bone says that is all part of the high-tech hunt.

“They keep on changing their modes and methods and it becomes more and more challenging,” Bone says. “It’s not about playing catch-up — we want to be ahead of them.”

Inspector Bone deserves a pat on the back for a job well done to help break up the child porn ring vis-vis Project Spade,
