I had to put my 13-year-old pug to sleep today, and damn if it didn't bother me a lot more than both my parents going within six weeks of each other. That doesn't make much sense to me. But no more pugs for me. That's the second one I've had to down.

Turtle, I'm sorry for your loss! We really get attached to our furry friends.

I feel for you, Turtle. That's sad.

When I lost my Jack Russell I just went to pieces & told the wife, "No more dogs!"

Now we have two.

There are a number of web pages dedicated to the theme of Why Dogs are Better than People.
I tend to concur with most of the thoughts posted therein.

Sincere sympathies.

My condolences, Turtle, but I ain't buying that line about never having another dog. My sister loves chihuahua's and every time one dies, she cries and swears she'll never get another, and 3 months later, she has a new pup. I bet you'll have a new pup by April.

had he been ill or was this totally unexpected?

Five days ago he was just fine, then wham, downhill. Went totally blind, stopped eating, became incontinent, stopped walking, then today very labored breathing, and weirdly, his eyes started shredding. I had an appointment Thursday, but when I saw those eyes I called around and said he has to go right now. Found one place about four blocks away. Right now he's in a box in the back seat (cold outside) and I'm burying him tomorrow.

Sorry for your loss, Turtle. I know how it hurts to have to give them up.

Our furry friends grace our lives for too short a time.

They bring out the best in us.

They give us unqualified love all the time - no expectations - just love.

I hope your pain diminishes over time. It will never go away completely.

They are your children and that's why you grieve their passing more than that of your parents.

It's expected that you would outlive your parents. You and they prepare and understand that eventuality.

But parents never want to outlive their children.

That's the pain you are feeling now. That's how I felt when I was in your position and that's how I came to understand why it was so.

Bob, I don't often see eye-to-eye with you, but you did exactly the right thing. You allowed your beloved dog to pass with dignity and without too much suffering. No greater love could a pet owner show. You & I won't be allowed that privilege. Sometimes, how we deal with death is more important how we deal with life. You did good.

I know it's hard, me and my wife have been through this many times over the years, mostly dogs: Sonny 1 & 2 (German Shepherds), Stephen (cat), Chrystal (horse), Rambo (black lab), Sadie Mae (smooth collie), Zena (pronounced Zeena, blond shepherd mix), Tango (terrier mutt) and the three animals extant that Teri has left me with (Princess, German Shepherd, Gyro, terrier mutt, Jasper, horse), and countless others I've probably forgotten over the last three plus decades I was with my wife.

I agree with you, you should never get another Pug. You should get two or more. Dogs are pack animals, and unless you're a recluse and are always with your dog, it should have company.

Godspeed, my friend,

Jim

Amen.

I'd add, that even if you're mostly at home, any pet needs another buddy...dogs, cats, whatever.

They do need another four-legged friend.

I first read this in a hunting newsletter about 30 or so years ago. Fortunately it's now on line.

A Dog's Prayer

Treat me kindly, my beloved master, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for kindness than the loving heart of me.

Do not break my spirit with a stick, for though I should lick your hand between the blows, your patience and understanding will more quickly teach me the things you would have me do.

Speak to me often, for your voice is the world's sweetest music, as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail when your footstep falls upon my waiting ear.

When it is cold and wet, please take me inside... for I am now a domesticated animal, no longer used to bitter elements... and I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet beside the hearth... though had you no home, I would rather follow you through ice and snow than rest upon the softest pillow in the warmest home in all the land... for you are my god... and I am your devoted worshiper.

Keep my pan filled with fresh water, for although I should not reproach you were it dry, I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst. Feed me clean food, that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding, to walk by your side, and stand ready, willing and able to protect you with my life, should your life be in danger.

And, beloved master, should the Great Master see fit to deprive me of my health or sight, do not turn me away from you. Rather hold me gently in your arms as skilled hands grant me the merciful boon of eternal rest...and I will leave you knowing with the last breath I drew, my fate was ever safest in your hands.

They are your children

No they're not.

I was speaking metaphorically in my post to turtle.

However, new research shows that the bond between humans and their pet dogs in fact emulates/parallels the bond between parent and child.

www.psychologytoday.com/b...ome-human-children-owners

...What are the roots of the intense bonding that occurs between humans and dogs? Scientists at the University of Veterinary medicine in Vienna have found that the bond between dogs and their owners shares striking similarities to the relationship between human parents and their children.

...The relationship between pet owners and dogs parallels the deep connection formed between young children and their parents. The Vienna veterinary study was published in the journal PLOS ONE on June 21, 2013. This is the first study to trace the roots of this bonding between dogs and their owners back to the “Secure Base Effect.”

Secure Base Effect is a fundamental part of parent-child bonding. Human infants literally view their caregivers as a “secure base” when it comes to gaining confidence for interacting with the environment inside and outside the home. Until now, Secure Base Effect had not been thoroughly examined in dogs and their owners. The Vienna study provides the first evidence of the similarity between the Secure Base Effect found in dog-owner bonds as it parallels child-caregiver relationships. The researchers intend to follow up this investigation with a direct comparative study between dogs and children...There is no denying that pets become like family to their owners and that the family dog views his or her caregivers as surrogate parents....

Sorry to hear that Turtle, my condolences.

I had just watched Marley and Me a couple of weeks ago and it brought back memories of past little friends who are no longer around.

They, just as us, all pass away sooner or later. That we enjoyed our days together is what matters.

It certainly does for a fraction of single white women.
