New research has suggested that a daily serving of nuts could reduce the risk of heart diseases by nearly a third.

The US and Chinese researchers found that daily diet of various nuts such as cashews Brazil nuts and peanuts could curb deaths rates from heart diseases.

Experts from Hua Zhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China and Harvard School of Public Health in Boston in the United States analyzed the health benefits of nuts by using data from a number of earlier researches.

They included 18 different studies, covering more than 12000 cases of type two diabetes,15000 cases of heart disease and almost 50000 deaths.

The results unravel that daily diet of nuts can cut the risk of heart disease by between 28 and 29 percent and drop the danger of death from any cause by 17 percent according to the report published online in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

As nuts are high in unsaturated fats, protein and vitamins, as well as antioxidants, they are linked to a lower risk of heart disease.

The oils in nuts can reduce bad cholesterol and possibly inflammation, experts explain.

Researchers say following a cholesterol-lowering diet based on soy, nuts, and green vegetables is more likely to reduce bad cholesterol than a low fat diet.

The recent study can produce a stronger result than small-scale studies with limited numbers of people.

While the benefits were seen from peanuts, pistachios, almonds, walnuts and other tree nuts, researchers recommend various nuts and say “a handful of nuts a day keeps the doctor away.”
