SAN ANTONIO – Photos showing dozens of members of the militia groups on the U.S.-Mexico border carrying semi-automatic rifles and wearing masks, camouflage and tactical gear provide one of the first glimpses into the group's activities on the border.

Members of the militia groups, who say they have 10 active "teams" along the state's southern border, are seen at campsites, walking along the Rio Grande River, pointing rifles and pistols out of frame and flipping off the camera in the photos obtained by the San Antonio Express-News.

A spokesperson for the group provided the photos under the condition that members' faces be blurred because of fear of being identified by "cartel and gang members."

One of the photos shows a Border Patrol agent leaning through an armed militia member's vehicle window and pointing on a map. The U.S. Customs and Border Protection earlier this month strongly rebuked the group's presence on the border but did not return multiple requests for comment regarding the photo.

Gov. Rick Perry, who last week ordered 1,000 Texas National Guard members to the border, declined to comment specifically on the militia groups through a spokesman but said he is "leading to secure the border."

The groups, including Oathkeepers, Three Percenters and Patriots, began recruiting and organizing more than a month ago, as national media outlets began focusing on an influx of Central American immigrants illegally crossing the border, including more than 50,000 unaccompanied minors.

Barbie Rogers, founder of the Patriots Information Hotline, which is helping organize and recruit for the militia groups, said there are 10 "operations on the ground along the Texas border" from El Paso to Laredo to the Rio Grande Valley. Many of the groups are stationed on ranch land with permission from the owners, she said.

Some Facebook comments from members of the militias indicate the groups are not fearful of using force.

"(Rules of Engagement) is if in fear of bodily injury, weapons free, if fired upon, return fire. Real simple," member KC Massey posted along with a photo on Facebook. "We are not worried about an "International" incident if they shoot at us."

State Sen. Leticia Van de Putte, D-San Antonio, denounced the militia groups in a statement, saying "pointing guns at children solves nothing."

"Local law enforcement and federal border patrol agents have been clear. The presence of these outside independent militia groups does nothing to secure the border; it only creates an unsafe situation for law enforcement officials that are protecting our communities. Unfortunately, the vile rhetoric of my opponent inspires misguided efforts," said Van de Putte, who is running against state Sen. Dan Patrick, R-Houston, for lieutenant governor.

In an interview with the Express-News, Chris Davis, commander of the militia's "Operation Secure Our Border: Laredo Sector", who is seen in some of the photos, said members would secure the border in a "legal and lawful manner."

However, in a since-deleted 21-minute YouTube video of Davis, he said: "How? You see an illegal. You point your gun dead at him, right between his eyes, and you say, 'Get back across the border or you will be shot.'"

Davis, 37-year-old truck driver from Von Ormy, was discharged from the Army in 2001 "under other than honorable conditions in lieu of trial by court martial," according to a summary of Davis' military service obtained by the Express-News.

The Texas militia's operation names, according to Rogers, are: Bolinas Border Patrol, Central Valley Militia, Independant Citizens Militia, Alpha Team, Bravo Team, FOB Harmony, Operation Secure Our Border: Laredo Sector, O'Shanessy's Team, the 77's and Camp Geronimo.

Rogers called on Perry to send 5,000 more National Guard members to the border and "if cost is an issue" to "call the militia. They will come if you call them."

Still wary of this group, JT? These are the ones who won't take felons or people who act up on Facebook.

"pointing guns at children solves nothing."

These people talk out of both sides of their crooked mouths !

It's fine for these people if the government is the entity pointing the guns.

Still wary of this group, JT?

Wary as in federal infiltration?

There is no question in my mind that feds are embedded in every visible similar-type group including this one.

My advice?

Plan alone or with a friend(s) you've knows for decades.

Thanks. Perhaps Barbie does mean well, and I wouldn't want to discourage her in any way. I also wouldn't want to discourage people from going to the border and making their presence known. The thread we had on McCain's CREST act has wording that strongly suggests that the government is aware of these groups and wants to discourage them. Also, one can bet that contacts made through these groups would be risky.

The bottom line: I hope more Americans do go to the border and act as law-abiding witnesses, assuming laws are constitutional.

I do too and if a mass of Americans travel down there with a friend or two, I could see a full blown movement taking formation. Just as form follows function, movements precede organized groups.

To their credit, Jim Robinson and at least three other freepers made the trek to McAllen TX with a large "Repatriate the Illegals" sign.

Don't they belong in the Gaza strip sniping at Palestinians?

That's rich. My banning from FReeperville, in large part, was over his position on illegals & NAFTA. IIRC, Robinson had a brother-in-law who, thanks to NAFTA, moved his business to Mexico. I argued against the Treaty and the free flow of goods, services and people crossing our borders.

Now you are talking. Beam, and his philosophy, was feared by THEM.

Same here.

No one ever said that freepers are the sharpest knives in the drawer...

I'll bet they'll still ban for using the words 'wetback' or 'deport'. Or maybe that only happens late in the primaries when the appropriate RINO has been duly selected?
