RussiaToday...

The Polish Agriculture Ministry has prepared a formal complaint to the World Trade Organization (WTO) over the Russian ban on exports of agricultural goods from the European Union, according to the Minister Marek Sawicki.

Sawicki confirmed on Monday its being handled by Deputy Prime Minister Janusz PiechociDski, who is responsible for WTO cooperation and that in the coming days “the complaint will be handed over further.”

On August 1, Russia’s agricultural watchdog Rosselkhoznadzor imposed a ban on all fruit and vegetables imported from Poland, citing numerous certification problems.

Warsaw asked the EU for compensation for its farmers. However, a few days later Russia imposed a ban on agricultural goods from countries that had imposed sanctions against it, including the EU. The restrictions include fruit and vegetables.

Marek Sawicki said he is worried about Moscow’s response to Western sanctions, as it could make it very difficult for Poland to get compensation from the European Union.

Poland exported more than 804,000 tons of vegetables and fruit, worth about 336 million euro, to Russia in 2013. According to the Polish Ministry of Agriculture the country may lose more than 500 million euro due to the embargo.

On August 10 Poland asked the US to purchase the country's apples.

The Russian Ministry of Agriculture has given permission to 100 Brasilian companies to export food to Russia. This no doubt will please the EU, especially since those 100 Brasilian companies will do their utmost to stay on the Russian market after Russias one year ban on EU imports expires. Now I am waiting for the EU to makes its next stupid move. I expect it to be funny, like all the previous ones, so I can laugh some more.

volan Don't cry Poland. You cant have your bread buttered on both sides. You cant be hosting weapons from the West, sanctions against Russia, then complain that they wont take your apples. That's a bit hypocritical don't you think? Oh wait, you didn't think before you started handing out sanctions.

EU to urge Latin America not to export food to Russia:

The European Union is reported to be planning to dissuade Latin American countries from providing Russia with agricultural produce, saying it would be unfair and ‘difficult to justify.’

“We will be talking to the countries that would potentially replacing our exports to indicate that we would expect them not to profit unfairly from the current situation,” the Financial Times (FT) quotes one senior EU official talking at a briefing on the situation in Ukraine on Monday.

The food producers could sign new contracts with Russia, but it would be “difficult to justify” the desire of the countries to pursue the diplomatic initiatives to fill the gap left by the EU, the official added.

Another EU official explained that negotiations could be part of political discussions aimed at addressing the importance of a united international front on Ukraine, rather than hindering food exports to Russia.

Despite being the world’s largest trading bloc, the EU has little influence, as its 15-year negotiations with Latin America’s Mercosur have been mired in difficulties over market access.

Since Russia imposed an import ban on agricultural products from the EU, US, Australia, Norway and Canada, several Latin America countries and trade groups have said Moscow’s measures could offer them a lucrative windfall.

Chile is already tipped as a major beneficiary of Russia’s embargo on European fish, while Brazil immediately gave a green light to about 90 meat plants to start exporting chicken, beef and pork.

“Russia has the potential to be a large consumer of agricultural commodities, not just meat,” Seneri Paludo, Brazil’s Secretary for Agricultural Policy said, citing that Russia may also increase procurement of corn and soya beans.

Besides Latin America benefitting from the embargo, Belarus and Turkey are also believed to win from the supply gap.

The EU member states are meeting in Brussels on Thursday where they are expected to work out a comprehensive response to Russia’s food embargo.

Poster Comment:

Poles may be glupy but they have to go along with EU and NATO to enjoy visa-free travel and other membership benefits. NATO is dominated by US which in turn has its foreign policy determined by Israeli (dual-citizen) agents who also provide organizational and media support for Democratic and Republican candidates for Congress, the supreme policy making and budgeting body in America. The candidates these duals have "elected" now have to not only fund Israel's war machine but fight its enemies and give a rough time to countries like Russia which do business with nations like Iran which support Palestinians' right to get back lands stolen by Zionist Jews to form the illegal Israeli state. Quite the Rube Goldberg design.
