I had been on the ground helping Al Jazeera America** cover the protests and unrest in Ferguson, Mo., since this all started last week. After what I saw last night, I will not be returning. The behavior and number of journalists there is so appalling, that I cannot in good conscience continue to be a part of the spectacle.

**A clarification edit: I am not a full-time employee of any Al Jazeera branch or network. I am a freelance journalist who contributes to several media platforms.

Things I’ve seen:

-Cameramen yelling at residents in public meetings for standing in way of their cameras

-Cameramen yelling at community leaders for stepping away from podium microphones to better talk to residents

-TV crews making small talk and laughing at the spot where Mike Brown was killed, as residents prayed, mourned

-A TV crew of a to-be-left-unnamed major cable network taking pieces out of a Ferguson business retaining wall to weigh down their tent

-Another major TV network renting out a gated parking lot for their one camera, not letting people in. Safely reporting the news on the other side of a tall fence.

-Journalists making the story about them

-National news correspondents glossing over the context and depth of this story, focusing instead on the sexy images of tear gas, rubber bullets, etc.

-One reporter who, last night, said he came to Ferguson as a “networking opportunity.” He later asked me to take a picture of him with Anderson Cooper.

One anecdote that stands out: as the TV cameras were doing their live shots in front of the one burnt-out building in the three-block stretch of “Ground Zero,” around the corner was a community food/goods drive. I heard one resident say: “Where are the cameras? I’m going to go see if I can find some people to film this.”

Last night a frustrated resident confronted me when he saw my camera: “Yall are down here photographing US, but who gets paid?!”

There are now hundreds of journalists from all over the world coming to Ferguson to film what has become a spectacle. I get the sense that many feel this is their career-maker. In the early days of all this, I was warmly greeted and approached by Ferguson residents. They were glad that journalists were there. The past two days, they do not even look at me and blatantly ignore me. I recognize that I am now just another journalist to them, and their frustration with us is clear. In the beginning there was a recognizable need for media presence, but this is the other extreme. They need time to work through this as a community, without the cameras.

We should all be ashamed, and I cannot do it anymore. I am thankful for my gracious editors who understand that.

The whore media made the story about themselves.

They suck.

Well Ryan, just go to www.infowars.com to watch real journalists in action.

“The most dangerous man to any government is the man who is able to think things out... without regard to the prevailing superstitions and taboos. Almost inevitably he comes to the conclusion that the government he lives under is dishonest, insane, intolerable.” ~ H. L. Mencken

I get the sense that many feel this is their career-maker.

Didn't I call it a few days ago? Vulture media creating stories through omission of fact, through bold face lies, not reporting news - thinking this is their big chance to make their bones, to become a talking hairdo on teevee, or even win the Pulitzer Prize.

Sickening.

At least this free-lance journalist, who bailed from Ferguson, has scruples and decency.

Considering the best information currently known, what is the most probable ‘future’ perspective on "Ferguson?" Consider:

1. The Ferguson Crisis was a function of knee-jerk hysterical “Inverted Racism” – with a total abandonment of the sacred concept of “…. innocent, until proven guilty.”

2. The ‘crisis’ evolved into a one-sided operation of racial “tribalism.”

3. The news media - also ignoring the notion of “…. innocent, until proven guilty” - played a major role in fanning the flames of “Ferguson;” essentially prostituting the factually unsupported assertion of the “… racially motivated death” of Michael Brown.

4. However unprepared, “law enforcement” was careful to minimize any ‘power projection;’ to the best of their ability.

5. The Ferguson Crisis “lessons-learned” serve as a general model for future “riot control.”

6. The collective consequences of the Ferguson Crisis triggered a major set-back for the black community, in particular.

7. The Ferguson Crisis skewed the public perception away from the post ‘60s notion that ‘minorities’ should be reliably presumed to be “… entitled victims.”

Too “speculative?” Examine the ‘most reliable’ information to date:

A. Officer Wilson took a beating from Brown while the officer was sitting in his cruiser.

B. Officer Wilson was initially addressing TWO individuals. Had he planned or anticipated any ‘problems,’ he would have at least ‘defensively’ postured himself accordingly – outside his cruiser. It’s also reasonable that he would have called for ‘back-up.’

C. If the officer was predisposed to racism or violence – or feared violence - he wouldn’t have been caught sitting in his cruiser, at a complete stop, with his window down. Instead, he would have been at least standing outside his cruiser; in order to at least be best prepared to ‘defend’ himself against any possible violence. Except for ‘surprise,’ the officer could have driven away.

D. If the police department, per se, was given to any significant measure of ‘racism,’ Officer Wilson would have quickly called for back-up – PRIOR to the encounter.

E. The initial statements of Brown’s side-kick, Dorian Johnson – previously charged with making false statements to police; reportedly also having a warrant out for his arrest for “… failure to appear,” in the associated alleged theft - have been defeated by two autopsies; add Johnson’s subsequent statements.

F. For whatever reason, Brown charged at Officer Wilson, in the last seconds.

G. Given the number and locations of the non-fatal wounds on Brown’s body, it’s impossible to believe that Officer Wilson’s intent was to kill Brown.

H. To date, there hasn’t been anything resembling an Internal Affairs investigation – to anyone’s knowledge. So, why was the shooting presented directly to a Grand Jury?

I. The expedited presentation to the Grand Jury actually served those enraged in the black community – with the Prosecutor still being accused of racial bias.

J. The Governor (a prior Prosecutor; turned ‘politician’) announced that there would be an “aggressive prosecution” – based upon what? His additional abandonment of “… innocent until proven guilty” also supported those enraged in the black community – however prematurely. Rationally, the Governor should have instead announced an immediate “thorough” and “detailed” investigation – as a necessary precursor in the “justice” process. He, of all people, should be at least “attuned” to the legal process; with a radically greater respect for law enforcement officers. Supposedly, the involved officer has an exemplary record.

K. Lacking any reliable information of a ‘wrongful death,’ State Sen. Jamilah Nasheed (Afro-American) advised the County prosecutor Robert P. McCulloch: “If you should decide to not indict this police officer, the rioting we witnessed this past week will seem like a picnic compared to the havoc that will likely occur, because the black community will never accept that there was an impartial investigation from your office.” (She officially swore to support and protect the U.S. Constitution from all enemies; foreign and domestic – which includes the 5th Amendment.) Her words and actions, to date, are the epitome of “racially prejudiced;” inviting a back-fire of the post ‘60s attitudes on ‘equality.’

L. Comparably, Rep. William Lacy Clay (D), Missouri (Afro-American) also pronounced the shooting as a “murder” during a CNN interview – also with no appreciable information and/or evidence available to him. (Comparably officially sworn to support and protect the U.S. Constitution from all enemies; foreign and domestic – which, again, includes the 5th Amendment.)

Given the horrendous number of black-on-black shooting murders (with so many truly innocent women & children killed in cross-fires) in cities such as Detroit, Chicago, New York, Washington DC and Los Angeles - where is the 'black" outcry - and news media coverage - for justice for THOSE "black people?"

Considering that you can't effect a law concerning a 'rock,' unless a 'rock' exists; what can be logically and reasonably deduced about "inequality?" Is "Ferguson" destined to be part of an American 'wake-up call?'

At least in the USA, equality is a "conditioned" mythology!

Short people don't get picked up for Basketball teams. The blind can't get driver's and pilot's licenses. Skinny people don't get picked as Sumo wrestlers. Women aren't required to register for the 'draft.' Public restrooms are segregated by gender. Women comprise roughly 53% of the U.S. population - and have been in excess of 50%, since at least the end of W.W. II. (So, why are they a "minority," under the law?) America denounces the use of the team name "Redskins;" but "Apache" helicopter gunships are admired. Is the team name of the Minnesota "Vikings" racist? Does anyone think that a "White Congressional Caucus" would ever be allowed? How about a "United Caucasian College Fund?" Why aren't there laws protecting those in the "swinging communities" or "BDSM communities?"

In the 21st Century, should birth-controlled incest be legal? If a state license isn't required for a Baptism or Bar Mitzvah, why is a state license required for a marriage? Why IS polygamy illegal? Should there be a state "committed- relationship" license for Atheists? Should school children be punished if they pay for their school-lunch with cash, emblazoned with "In God We Trust."

Should quality thinking and judgment be re-badged as "uncommon sense?"

"It's like - you know - I mean; we don' need no stinkin' facts in Ferguson."

With rare exception, these types of issues betray the dynamics of the undeniable and 'primal lust' for "Power" - and its super-addictive nature. Or, as a synonynm: "adrenalin rush." In the case of Ferguson, the issue is obvioulsy "Black Power." When examined in that context, "Ferguson" makes perfect sense - however "Politically Incorrect" the conclusion may be.

In the months and years ahead, the increasing availability of the required "technology" - with steadily declining prices - will go a long way toward leveling the legal, social and political playing fields. That will be part of the legacy of "Ferguson;" however things play out.

BUT, such will be interesting; as 'civilians' will have access to the same technology - if not better technology. The 'usual' cost markup on government contracts will either require a horrendous 'technology' budget; or limit the availability of the same 'standard' of electronic components as utilized by 'civilians.'

That is to say that a trooper’s single-view dash and body cams may be confronted by a driver’s quad-view recording system, installed as a vehicle “security system.”

“Your Honor, the Defense is willing to stipulate that the Trooper was unaware that his dash-cam was inoperative. However, he was under the presumption that his activities and voice were being recorded. Conversely, my client’s vehicle recording security system was operating – as was his personal security pen-cam - and those recordings present a radically different account of the events; than those charged. In the interest of expediency, I have no objection, if the Prosecutor moves to dismiss the charges against my client – with the understanding that if this case proceeds, there may be some serious legal and administrative repercussions; which clearly won’t favor the Prosecutor or the Trooper.”

Thanks for the excellent overview.

Above is a key point.

Wilson 'ducked and chucked' until the threat was neutralized. The number of shots aren't indicative of malice but rather fear, IMO.

The phrase for the day is, "undocumented shoppers."

Fear????

The wet your drawers type.

Having been surrounded by black Africans, one with a knife, wanting to cut my throat, because I was white, I knew fear and wished to hell I had a grease gun. I would have blown all of them away.
