The revenue agents in the California legislature have launched a scheme preparing to charge motorists by the mile to drive in the state. SB-1077' 'Vehicles: road usage charge pilot program' will create a task force to address all the aspects of a 'charge- drivers-by-the- mile' program in the state, which would replace the purportedly 'ineffective' and 'inadequate' gasoline tax.

The bill's own author admits that "the mileage charge could burden families in California," and its' co-author admits that "the The bill's own author admits that "the mileage charge could burden families in California," and its' co-author admits that "the task force and pilot program will likely consume substantial resources."

.. The bill text also notes that the task force would take ..the following into consideration, not shy about their .use of force and confiscation:

The ease and cost of recording and reporting highway use. The ease and cost of administering the collection taxes and fees as an alternative to the current system of taxi.ng highway use through motor ve.h fuel taxes. Effective methods of maintaining compliance.

..The bill was presented to Governor Jerry Brown on 09/ 04/14, but has yet to receive his signature. Contact Brown's office to ask for his Veto today!

Poster Comment:

The bill's author is " aware of privacy concerns associated with the government tracking one’s movements. Those could be allayed, he said, by having state officials read a car's odometer each year rather than installing a device as pilot projects." However, that is contradicted by co-author Bonnie Lowenthal, who references "automatic license plate readers" in an official state analysis of the bill. Tell Governor Jerry Brown to VETO SB-1077! You can contact Brown by e-mail here or by Phone: (916) 445- 2841 and Fax: (916) 558-3160. ....Subscribe to *California list*

which would replace the purportedly 'ineffective' and 'inadequate' gasoline tax.

Is it safe to assume then that the gas tax will be discontinued?

I guess there will enough cop cars on the road to follow each driver individually to count their mileage.

having state officials read a car's odometer each year

Older cars with mechanical odometers (that can be manipulated) will be worth gold if this silly legislation becomes reality.

I think the "we'll check your odometer once a year" is pure b.s. because people leave the state on trips regularly. They'll try to get some sort of tracking device. I can't imagine the people going for this.

Cool thanks

When government gains the power to control the use of private property, it becomes possible for the politically dominant to profit by high commodity prices using government regulation to constrain supply. One merely drives competitors out of business by manipulating the perception of risk to a land use preferred by a democratic majority. - Mark Edward Vande Pol
