I had the great pleasure of watching Ernie Banks and the Chicago Cubs play the Brooklyn Dodgers at Ebbets Field in 1956. I was 7 years old and it is my first baseball memory. Banks had just come up from the minors and played shortstop. I recall my brother telling me he could really hit. I don't recall anything else about that day but I did go on to become a lover of baseball and Ernie Banks was one of my boyhood heroes. His nickname was Mr. Sunshine because he was never seen without that wonderful smile. One of the many stories about Ernie is that he liked to tell his teammates on gorgeous days, "It's a beautiful day, let's play two!"

So that's it, just a quick note about a wonderful man and a different time. (1 image)

Just wonderful, thank you.

“The most dangerous man to any government is the man who is able to think things out... without regard to the prevailing superstitions and taboos. Almost inevitably he comes to the conclusion that the government he lives under is dishonest, insane, intolerable.” ~ H. L. Mencken

He did have a "sunshine" smile.

Strangely, unlike today's ball players, it doesn't look like he has muscles coming out of his ears.
