Despite having used flash-grenades, tear gas, gunshots, sheriff's robot, battering ram, and SWAT officers in the standoff, police sent in 3-year-old German shepherd mix Sultan to apprehend the 'wanted felon,' who was hiding under a house. The Initial Sheriff statement made no mention that the dog was killed by gunshot. Police shot and killed 36-year-old suspect Todd Allan Hodge when he emerged from under the house at 11:27PM Wednesday. He had been under there for 9 hours. No candlelight vigil was scheduled for the villain, who was being sought by police for skipping a court date. A formal funeral for the dog will be held soon, along with a proposed memorial. The 'cash-strapped' city of San Jacinto is soliciting donations from the public and have set up an official 'Sultan fund.'

During the lengthy standoff, SWAT personnel made numerous announcements to have the suspect surrender. In an attempt to have the suspect surrender peacefully, SWAT personnel deployed tear gas. Shortly thereafter, the suspect emerged from underneath the residence armed with a handgun and a deputy involved shooting occurred.

You don't use tear gas to make people surrender peacefully. Tear gas forces people to relocate. There is no choice, as anyone who has experienced it will tell you, and deploying it in a confined space is potentially lethal.

It should be interesting to read the official report of the killing after its released )I'm referring to that of the suspect, not the dog.)

What a shame. Loss of life over a missed court date. Boy they aren't kdding when they say failure to appear.

What I quoted is from the official police report, at least according to the source site.

You're right, the only thing the recipient of tear gas wants to do is find someplace it isn't, and fast. I'm curious though, why when an officer leaves the K9 in the car to overheat and die, it isn't dealt with in the same way. I think it happened in Texas at least 3 times last summer and all I ever read about the incidents was how upset the officer was. Nothing about how he murdered another officer or anything. No tearful memorials about the life of the friendly-fried dog in those instances.

I meant the official coroners report of the killing which usually takes a month or so., or longer. the other thing was simply a press release from the cops.

the ezell ford autopsy in los angeles (he was killed by lapd) took 5 months for them to finish.
