Why doesn't the auto-categorize feature ever work? Get rid of it and stop saying we have to pick a category. Thanks much, 4um posters.

Now that the Kenyan has made the Interwebs a utility, the FCC might take your complaint.

Yeah, I don't know how useful that feature is. What do you think, Neil?

Truth is still truth even if no one believes it. A lie is still a lie even if everyone believes it.

Thanks guys.

In order to work, there does have to be some kind of written content in the article being posted, and in the case of this thread, there really isn't any. Also, on the admin pages, there has to be a vocabulary of terms in place for each category for the article being posted to be compared to. If categories don't have any terms listed then, no, auto categorization can't work. I suggest reviewing the vocabulary for each category to see if terms are present and if there are more/new terms that can be added.

I think the auto-categorization often does work, but it shouldn't be any inconvenience to users even if it doesn't, as they still would need to manually select a category whether auto categorization doesn't work or if it were turned off (which is why the feature can't be turned off).

That has been my experience in the limited number of articles I've posted. It works, or it has been pretty damn close to categorizing them correctly.

AC has NEVER worked here.

I always get the YOU MUST SELECT A CATEGORY message; AC, imo, can be scrubbed.

AC has NEVER worked here.

I maintain it does often work, but the smaller the article posted, the less likely it is to work. Of course I don't keep track of what people routinely post, but if your practice is to only post links to other articles as with this thread, then no, you'll never see it work.

Scrubbing the feature would have the benefit of removing the "Auto categorize" option from the drop down menu, and likely replacing it with "Choose category", which means not manually selecting a category will result in the exact same complaint from the web server when a category is not manually selected.

If you are suggesting doing away with categories altogether, then that could be done, with a bit of effort.
