LOS ANGELES (AP) — A salmonella outbreak likely linked to raw tuna has sickened 53 people in nine states, health officials said Thursday.

Most of the cases — 31 — are in California, officials at the California Department of Public Health said. Other affected states include Arizona, Illinois, Mississippi, New Mexico, South Dakota, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin.

Ten people have been hospitalized but no deaths have been reported, according to state and federal officials. The source of the outbreak is unknown, but most who fell ill reported eating sushi containing raw tuna.

"At this time, a common brand or supplier of raw tuna has not been identified," the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on its website.

Salmonella is a bacteria and the most common source of food poisoning in the U.S. Symptoms include diarrhea, cramping and fever.

Health officials said the elderly, young children, pregnant women and people with weak immune systems should not eat raw fish or raw shellfish.

"This is a good reminder to Californians that there are sometimes risks when eating raw or undercooked meats, fish or poultry," Dr. Karen Smith, director of the California Department of Public Health, said in a statement.

In Japan, it takes years of apprenticeship to become a full fledged sushi Itamae. If you have ever been to a reputable establishment they are very retentive when it comes to cleanliness of their blades and work surfaces, temperature at which the fish is kept at, all the way down to the cooking of the rice. Believe it or not a person is much more likely to get food poisoning at a fast food joint than at a sushi bar. It pretty much goes without saying that this outbreak originated from the supplier of the tuna, probably an unclean/unsanitary blade or grinder, and you can bet someone's head is going to roll over this when they find out who is responsible.

And yes, I don't care what anyone says, tuna and salmon taste much better raw then when cooked.3-2

What happens when you put profit and convenience ahead of respect for your own planet. Even dogs have more sense than to poop where they sleep 8-10

J. C. what a BS rant, you can get salmonella from fish that comes from pristine waters... if it is improper stored and / or prepared. Nothing to do with the state of the oceans. There are pristine lakes in parts of this country, and people have gotten sick from salmonella after storing fish they caught wrong on their way home.3-3..

Jennifer... @J.C.--Uh, no, you can't. Salmonella is a bacterium, but it has nothing to do with proper storage. It's a contaminant, not something that "grows" if food is left out like other bacteria associated with food poisoning. It can be killed with cooking, but it should be there in the first place--particularly on fish. Salmonella is usually present on poultry or beef. Tuna with salmonella is very unusual. So in this case, the salmonella must have hitched a ride somewhere between the ocean where it was caught and the restaurant where it was served. Yet it appears to be regional rather than from a single restaurant, which means it's either the supplier or the ocean itself. Dr. Strange is correct to insinuate that it could have originated in the ocean, which is often polluted with urban runoff and sewage. It's the same idea that a person can get e.coli from lettuce that has been contaminated by human or cow feces. 1

Should we be eating any tuna? I read that it's so radioactive anymore we should limit it to once a week. I figure fish is simply off limits now due to Fukushima et al. but ouch, the tuna's just sitting there on my favorite salad bar, and good, too.
