HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Mississippi flags have been removed at the City of Hattiesburg police and fire stations.

Mayor Johnny DuPree's spokesperson, Chinika Hughes, says Mississippi Flags have been removed per the mayor's order.

"While there were state flags that were flown at city-owned buildings, the state flag at City Hall has not been up for several years," said Mayor Johnny DuPree. "We have removed the state flags to honor the lives of the nine individuals slain in the church shooting in Charleston, SC, their families, and community as they mourn. We are extending the same show of support as they did during our time of distress," he said.

Mississippi House Speaker Philip Gunn released a statement regarding the Mississippi Flag earlier this week.

"We must always remember our past, but that does not mean we must let it define us," Gunn said Monday night in a Facebook post. "As a Christian, I believe our state's flag has become a point of offense that needs to be removed. We need to begin having conversations about changing Mississippi's flag."

On Wednesday, both of Mississippi's United States senators, Republicans Roger Wicker and Thad Cochran, called for the flag to be changed and to remove the Confederate symbol.

Lieutenant Governor Tate Reeves released a statement that said if voters wanted to revisit the flag on the ballot after the 2001 decision to keep it, "it will best be decided by the people of Mississippi."

Governor Phil Bryant said Thursday he would not call a special session to consider changing the flag.

“Mississippi flags have been removed in observance of showing support for what happened in South Carolina,” Hughes explained.

Hughes said the mayor did not give a date on when or if the flags would go back up.

This is a developing story, stay tuned to wdam.com for more updates.

Removing State flags like that is a show of Secession. There should be a recall of that mayor from office. P.C. moronics aren't authorized to dictatorially rule Americans. Mississipians of that city, it's your duty to raise those flags back where they were.

Several years ago fedgov decreed that no State flags would be flown at US post offices. Because some flags make blacks and Sikhs -- such as Nimrata Nikki Randhawa -- feel bad.

Sounds like a move by totalitarian rogues that don't really represent Americans. Can you link some info on that? I tried to search for such a State flag decree and found that, in 2010, a Post Office in Marlboro, NY, was reportedly not flying the U.S. flag for months because of stalling on fixing or replacing a broken flag pole but no sources for State flags being banned from them. The flags mentioned here as recently removed by mayoral decree were at the police and fire stations. The Post Office wasn't mentioned but a State flag removal at City Hall was and, also, that it's been down for several years. By whose order was that done and under what Stateless authority might that City Hall suppose it's conducting official business? If the civilians, police, fire and City Hall officials of Hattiesburg all neglect to restore those flags soon, the State of Mississippi's National Guard should be assigned that duty.

I think they forgot to put it up. No biggie, I just shared my observation upon entering the facility. I don't go to the Post Office much, but the flag is normally my cue to getting there. It's a small place in a congested area.

And on the double but i suspect that since it is all part of the rouge beast gone mad , that isn't likely to happen.

I can't find anything on it, either. Several years ago, post offices around here stopped flying the State flag, and as I recall their stated reason was that fedgov had prohibited it.

But since with a quick search neither you nor I can find any info on that subject, I'm wondering if fedgov really has banned US post offices from flying State flags.

Does anybody here know? Anybody seen a State flag flying from a US post office recently?

Mississippi's flag, with its Confederate symbols, removed outside Idaho capitol

By The Associated Press on June 24, 2015

BOISE — Mississippi's flag, and the Confederate symbols embedded within it, has come down outside Boise's state capitol building.

Boise Mayor David Bieter pushed to have the symbol removed from City Hall's 50- state display following the South Carolina church massacre and ensuing debate over the Confederate flag being flown at the capitol there.

A Boise official says there are currently no plans to return Mississippi's flag to the display.

City spokesman Mike Journee says he appreciates the historic significance, but that flying a flag that makes people feel unwelcome doesn't coincide with Boise's reputation as a place that embraces diversity.

Mississippi flag with stars and bars missing from USA track championships

By Paul Myerberg, USA TODAY Sports June 27, 2015

EUGENE, Ore. – The U.S. state flags that flutter atop poles stationed along the south end of Hayward Field speak to the many national competitions seen at this historic track venue, which will play host to its sixth national Olympic trials in 2016.

While there are poles in place for all 50 state flags, only 49 can be seen at this week's USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships.

In the wake of a national controversy over the Confederate flag, TrackTown USA, organizers of the event, has decided to remove the Mississippi state flag, which features the Confederate stars and bars in its upper left corner.

TrackTown USA President Vin Lananna, an associate athletic director at the University of Oregon and the former head track and field coach at Stanford University, deferred any comment on the decision until Sunday.

The organization's decision to not display the state flag is echoed in comments made Saturday by NASCAR President Brian France, who called the Confederate flag an "insensitive symbol," adding that the sport would attempt to distance itself from the flag at future events.

"We want to go as far as we can to eliminate the presence of that flag," France said in an interview with The Associated Press. "I personally find it an offensive symbol, so there is no daylight how we feel about it and our sensitivity to others who feel the same way."

Dale Earnhardt Jr., perhaps NASCAR's most popular driver, called the Confederate flag "offensive to an entire race" and said it should be removed from the grounds of the South Carolina state capitol.

"It does nothing for anybody to be there flying, so I don't see any reason," he said. "It belongs in the history books and that's about it."

Only 49 state flags are on display at the south end of Hayward Field in Eugene during the USA Track & Field Outdoor Championships. Mississippi's state flag, which features a Confederate banner in one corner, has not been on display during the four-day meet, which concludes Sunday.

By Allan Brettman | The Oregonian/OregonLive on June 27, 2015

EUGENE – The Mississippi state flag, which features the Confederate flag in one corner, is not among the state flags displayed at Hayward Field during the USA Track & Field Outdoor Championships.

Friday evening, TrackTown USA meet organizers referred questions about the omission to TrackTown USA president Vin Lananna, who could not be reached. On Saturday, a TrackTown USA spokesman said Lananna would be available Sunday to speak about the absent flag.

A USA Track & Field spokeswoman declined to comment about the flag, referring questions to meet organizers.

In Mississippi, House Speaker Philip Gunn recently became the state's first top- tier Republican to say the Confederate X should be erased from the state flag. Gunn cited his Christian faith in saying the symbol had become "a point of offense."

And in Salem, 20 lawmakers have called for the removal of Mississippi's flag from a decade-old promenade outside the Oregon Capitol that displays state flags of the 50 states.

Confederate imagery in Oregon: Now 20 lawmakers want Mississippi flag taken down

By Denis C. Theriault | The Oregonian/OregonLive on June 26, 2015

SALEM — Eighteen more lawmakers have joined calls this week by two Democrats, Rep. Lew Frederick of Portland and Rep. Tobias Read of Beaverton, to remove Mississippi's Confederate-marked state flag from a decade-old promenade outside the Oregon Capitol.

All 20 names appear in fresh legislation, House Bill 3568, scheduled for a first reading on the House floor Friday. HB 3568 unsparingly connects the Confederate flag to the nation's history of racial injustice and says "many Oregonians object to a symbol of slavery, racism and intolerance."

It would swap in an earlier version of Mississippi's flag emblazoned with a magnolia tree

Read announced plans for legislation Tuesday, a day after The Oregonian/OregonLive first reported on the state's display of the Mississippi flag and quoted Frederick comparing the Confederate flag to "a swastika flag."

The list of sponsors includes two House Republicans, Julie Parrish of West Linn and Vic Gilliam of Silverton.

Besides Read and Frederick, 16 Democrats have also signed on so far: Jeff Barker of Aloha, Phil Barnhart of Eugene, Brent Barton of Oregon City, Deborah Boone of Cannon Beach, Paul Evans of Monmouth, Shemia Fagan of Clackamas, Joe Gallegos of Hillsboro, David Gomberg of Otis, Alissa Keny-Guyer of Portland, Betty Komp of Woodburn, Ann Lininger of Portland, Nancy Nathanson of Eugene, Rob Nosse of Portland, Carla Piluso of Gresham, Jeff Reardon of Portland and Barbara Smith Warner of Portland.

Oregon's Mississippi flag is part of a decade-old Walk of the States installation just outside the Capitol. The flag is sponsored by Sen. Brian Boquist, R-Dallas [Oregon]

State officials told The Oregonian/OregonLive that no one raised concerns about displaying a Confederate icon when the flags went up in 2005. They also said, as far as they could tell, no one had complained in the years since.

Visitors to Gettysburg National Military Park will no longer be able to purchase numerous pieces of Confederate flag merchandise from its bookstore.

National Park Service Director Jonathan B. Jarvis said Thursday that “stand- alone depictions of Confederate flags have no place in park stores,” a local affiliate reported.

The decision to pull the merchandise comes in the wake of a the shooting death of nine black members of Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in South Carolina. Dylann Storm [Roof], 21, was arrested June 18 in connection with the killings, which took place the previous night.

The bookstore said items that feature both the U.S. and Confederate flags together will still be sold. Eleven items in total will no longer be available, the station reported.

It's fantastic. You take a rebel flag down somewhere and crime instantly drops. Do you suppose it would work in non-flag areas by putting one up just to take it down?

Comment at article #3 of Post #12:

"I'm in Eugene for the U.S. Nationals. At the south end of the track I counted 44 of the 50 state flags flying. I looked for the Mississippi state flag and it wasn't there. My first hypothesis, there was only enough space for 44 flags. But there was space for more, so that theory was out. My next thought, only the states who have athletes competing have their flags flying. But not much later in the athlete introductions, I heard them announce a runner from Ole Miss. So that wasn't the answer."

Comments at article #5, the last of Post #12:

"State of Washington flag has George Washington's ugly mug smack dab in the middle of the flag. Washington was a slave owner, so the WA state flag is racist, too!"

"this sudden rush to flag purity isn't going to stop with flags. All over the South are memorials and statues that some will find offensive and claim that they 'promote racism.' The flags are just the start, and frankly, the whole thing reminds me a little of the Red Guard of China, with our new Red Guard seeking to erase the vestiges of the past in order to create a brave new world."

Red Guards (China) - Wikipedia

the Cultural Revolution Group directed the Red Guards to attack the 'Four Olds' of Chinese society (old customs, old culture, old habits and old ideas). For the rest of the year, Red Guards marched across China in a campaign to eradicate the 'Four Olds'. Old books and art were destroyed, museums were ransacked, and streets were renamed with new revolutionary names and adorned with pictures and the sayings of Mao. Many famous temples, shrines, and other heritage sites in Beijing were attacked.

However, attacks on culture quickly descended into attacks on people. Ignoring guidelines in the 'Sixteen Articles' that stipulated that persuasion rather than force were to be used to bring about the Cultural Revolution, officials in positions of authority and perceived 'bourgeois elements' were denounced and suffered physical and psychological attacks. Intellectuals were to suffer the brunt of these attacks. Many were ousted from official posts such as university teaching and allocated manual tasks such as "sweeping courtyards, building walls and cleaning toilets from 7am to 5pm daily" which would encourage them to dwell on past "mistakes". An official report in October 1966 reported that the Red Guards had already arrested 22,000 'counterrevolutionaries'.

The Red Guards were also tasked with rooting out 'capitalist roaders' (those with supposed 'right wing' views) in positions of authority.

Your 2nd statement sounds like you either didn't read Posts #11 and #12 before replying or you didn't quite understand that Mississippi's State flag has also been removed from locations in two other States, Idaho and Oregon, and that Oregon is presuming the legislative power to change Mississippi's flag there. I don't know what prompted your 1st statement. If it was meant to be sarcastic, others might not take it that way and it could make histrionic matters worse.

My point, for anybody interested, is that it's pure gold if (!) only one MS town is purging -- because MS is the last state with a CSA flag. MS's moment of truth came and it was the high point of the entire flag ruckus era in that one state, the most hated and libeled of all, ACTUALLY HELD A REFERENDUM on it -- the obvious remedy that neither SC's nor any others' politicians dared do. The vote was breathtaking for us who'd endured years of active duty in this fight -- even a majority of blax who voted said NO CHANGE.

Obviously MS's prostiticians might be stupid enough to just yank the flag, but that's another aspect.

Possibly, the objective is for all State flags to go down -- only the U.S. flag to be flown by them as symbolic of Federal Totalitarianism and the elimination of States' Rights by the Cultural Marxists of SCOTUS. Homosexuals hijacked the rainbow symbol as a meaningless flag about their group but a deliberate offense to anyone who religiously believes God provided a rainbow for the world after the flood in the Biblical book of Genesis. Likely, they also hijacked it to degrade it as no longer a traditional-family friendly symbol for their children or one that positively signifies cheerfulness and hopefulness -- not "GAYness" that allegedly means "Good As You" at what?

Haven't heard any politicos or Speakeasy commentators mention the fact being deflected by the Charleston ragings that the Federal government itself evidently didn't tolerantly validate marriage-stylings of rainbow flag cultics with so much as a categorical tax deduction permit. Good post, thanks.

TPM [Talking Points Memo] August 4, 2015: 2 Men Open Fire On Soldiers At Jade Helm Training Site In Mississippi by AP Staff

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) — A sheriff in Mississippi says authorities are searching for two men who fired gunshots from a vehicle at soldiers at a military facility. No injuries were reported.

Perry County Sheriff Jimmy Dale Smith tells WDAM-TV (http://bit.ly/1UlrHi6) that the shots were fired just after noon Tuesday. The soldiers were training at Camp Shelby Joint Forces Training Center in Hattiesburg.

U.S. Special Forces Command designated Camp Shelby as one of the sites where a multi-state military training exercise, "Jade Helm 15", was expected to take place, according to The Army Times.

About 4,600 soldiers are participating in the training exercise, which is scheduled to continue through mid-August.

A vehicle matching the description of the two suspects' truck was found near New Augusta off Old Augusta Road, according to WDAM. The suspects were driving a red Ford Ranger with the words "broken arrow" on the windshield.

Two men are being questioned by MHP, but are not under arrest at this time. Authorities say they are still looking for two white males who allegedly fired from the vehicle and fled in the vehicle.

Conspiracy theory websites have noted that a logo used in a "leaked" slideshow presentation for the "Jade Helm 15" exercise featured broken arrows in its design. In military terminology, "broken arrow" is code used to signal for assistance when a unit or camp is overrun.

Members of the Forrest County Sheriff's Department and the Mississippi Forestry Commission are assisting in the search.

TPM reporter Catherine Thompson contributed reporting to this story.

infowars.com August 4, 2015: Marines Fired On Near Jade Helm Training Site [with CBS and Claron-Ledger/usatoday.com News links]; Excerpts:

Training exercise gone awry? or as planned?

Update (Wednesday, Aug. 5): For a second day, marines near the Camp Shelby training base in Mississippi have been fired on, putting the base on high alert.

No injuries have been reported.

The facility, Camp Shelby, described as “the largest state-owned and operated field training site in the United States,” is one of two locations in Mississippi where US Army Special Operations Command is currently conducting the controversial eight-week Jade Helm training exercise.

Back in March, Infowars reported that, in addition to the seven initial southwestern states, Jade Helm operations would also be run out of Mississippi and Florida.

Jade Helm Operations Planner and retired Green Beret Thomas Mead told the Brazos County Commissioners Court that NAVY Seals would “be conducting targets and training down in the Mississippi area.”

“The exercise is actually an eight-week exercise taking place across seven states,” Mead said. “As you can see right there, it spans the whole southwest of the United States. We’ve also added Mississippi and we have a group also working out of Florida.”

“We’ll have Navy Seals that’ll be conducting targets and training down in the Mississippi area.”

The “Mississippi area” referred to is presumably one of the locations revealed on slide 6 of the now-infamous Jade Helm powerpoint slide show, which designates the Camp Shelby training site and the Naval Small Craft Instruction and Technical Training School at Stennis Island as SOTF (Special Operations Task Force) training spots.

While trying to find more details on the shooting, we did at least run across an intriguing July 16 post [...] explaining that Jade Helm is actually an operation “created and funded by the CIA in Switzerland in order to spark a civil war in America.” [...] Also, too, the article’s headline vaguely predicts “Attacks on Jade Helm Soldiers by ‘Operation Counter Jade Helm’ Terrorists,” although the actual text failed to explain how that would go down. Still, credit where it’s due: this [...] guy sort of predicted attacks on Jade Helm troops, and now one has happened, so we guess he wins a prize.

Update: Things just got weird. Reporter Malary Pullen with Jackson, Mississippi, station WJTV tweets that there’s been a second incident of gunfire Wednesday morning near Camp Shelby, allegedly by the same suspect, and again with no injuries. She also tweeted a press release from the camp: [Pic]

So we’re guessing that rules out squirrel hunting; now they’re hunting for a squirrelly guy with a gun.

Wikipedia info: Hattiesburg, Mississippi

Hattiesburg is a city in Mississippi, bisected by the county line between Forrest County (where it is the county seat[2]) and Lamar County.

South of Hattiesburg is Camp Shelby, the largest National Guard training base east of the Mississippi River.

Throughout the 20th Century, Hattiesburg benefited from the founding of Camp Shelby (now a military mobilization center),

Hattiesburg is home to the African American Military History Museum. Opened in 1942 to serve African Americans serving at Camp Shelby and now on the National Register of Historic Places. The museum started out as a USO Club location and is the only remaining original club location left in the United States.
