I remember the first time I ever saw Dolly. She was barely 18 and sang on Porter Wagoner's show (from Amarillo, TX IIRC).

Porter's wife wound up divorcing him for giving Dolly a new Cadillac and fur coat. Not sure what Porter got out of the deal (snicker)

I've been imbibing heavily, I exit tonight's 4-UM discussion with what I believe is the greatest Country & Western song ever recorded:

This is the old 'real country.' I'm not well versed in it.

Loretta's favorite was Bill Monroe.

Elvis' first national hit was his rendition of Bill's 'Blue Moon of Kentucky.'

Ricky Skaggs got some of his fire from Bill Monroe as a kid.

(FF to 1:00 to get past the 'twang.)

Jeff Beck can surely make his Fender sing.

Its all in the ears (and fingers).

I gave $50 for Ricky Nelson's 12-string Harmony in 1970. Got it from a lady whose son 'left it behind' when he 'went off to college' and didn't want it anymore. She had no idea what she had. I didn't either. Played it for two years and sold it for .. $50.

Perhaps no picker has ever 'crossed' the line smoother than Chet Atkins. Mark Knopfler would agree I think ..
