A longtime political leader says the Left is once again using a horrific shooting to push for the confiscation of firearms in the United States.

After the murders of TV reporter Alison Parker and cameraman Adam Ward in Virginia, some gun-control advocates pounced on the tragedy to push for tighter gun laws.

Minutes after the shooting, Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe proclaimed that America needs greater gun-control laws, even though shooter Vester Flanagan had passed a background check to obtain a handgun.

"When they say gun control, what they really mean is gun confiscation," says Richard Land, who confronted cultural and political issues as head of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission.

Land is now president of Southern Evangelical Seminary.

In a story pushing for more gun laws, CNN reported that Alison Parker's father, Andy Parker, has "emerged as perhaps the world's most visible advocate for gun control."

"We are going to effect a change," he vowed in an interview with CNN.

The story also quoted her mother, Barbara Parker, who said:

If you are a parent, if you are a mother, if you have children -- how can you look your child in the eye and say we are willing to allow you to be collateral damage in order to keep what some people perceive to be their constitutional rights?

But the only way to keep Flanagan from obtaining a handgun, Land says, is to make them illegal for everyone.

The far-Left's reaction to the Virginia shooting drew the ire of National Review writer Charles Cooke. He wrote that liberals, including President Obama, want to confiscate guns but hide behind phrases such as "fighting the NRA" and holding a "national conversation."

"Seriously, try it. Start the process," Cooke wrote. "Stop whining about it on Twitter, and on HBO, and at the Daily Kos."

Gun confiscation would require a house-to-house search, Cooke points out, predicting anywhere from 20 million to 30 million Americans would "rather fight a civil war than let you in their houses."

There is also an issue that the Left does not discuss, which his mental health, Land tells OneNewsNow.

"This guy was obviously a nut-job," he says of Flanagan. "There were all kinds of signals that he was going to explode."

Land says a Rasmussen poll from June found that 68 percent of likely U.S. voters would prefer living in a neighborhood where they have the option of owning a gun than to live where no one is allowed to be armed.(1 image)

Absent Affirmative Action coddling, Flanagan would have tripped the Insane-O-Meter on any honest background check.

A gun dealer recently told me that by law he can refuse to sell to ANYONE if he deems the potential buyer unfit to purchase a firearm. And he said that he has done that before.

Good thing he's not a wedding cake dealer; the fines would have put him out of business by now.

Obama still has 16 months in office, it will get worse.
