Abbas’ Duplicitous UN Address

by Stephen Lendman

Abbas is a Palestinian Judas, an illegitimate president, remaining in power over six years after his term expired, refusing to call new elections.

He’s a longtime Israeli collaborator, disgracing the office he holds, guilty of massive corruption, profiting at the expense of long-suffering people he’s sworn to serve and protect, operating as Israel’s enforcer, supporting police state harshness instead of contesting it.

His Wednesday UN address was pure grandstanding, shameless demagoguery, largely warmed over boilerplate, his weak-kneed threat to be no longer bound by Oslo Accord principles a meaningless gesture, changing nothing for Palestinians, certainly not helping them in any way.

He was directly involved in negotiating Oslo and subsequent sellouts, unconditionally surrendering to Israeli demands. His participation in sham peace talks further shamed him. How can Palestinians have peace without a legitimate partner, not even someone allegedly representing them!

Abbas’ failure to help besieged Gazans since mid-2007, notably during three Israeli premeditated wars since December 2008, alone shows which side he’s on.

His UN remarks rang hollow, rhetoric polar opposite his policies, “demand(ing) international protection for the Palestinian people,” when actions  he endorses and takes abuse them.

Suggesting he’ll no longer front for Israel is polar opposite how he operates. The symbolic raising of the Palestinian flag at the UN in New York was no “watershed moment.”

It does nothing to alleviate their suffering, nothing to end occupation harshness, nothing to stop collective punishment, nothing to halt land theft, nothing to prevent Israel from waging aggressive wars at its discretion.

Its regimes since Gen-Gurion remain unaccountable for mass slaughter and destruction, displacement and slow-motion genocide for over 67 years, Palestinians worse off today than any time since the horrors of the Nakba.

Abbas bears direct responsibility, enforcing Israeli policies for the past decade, supporting them throughout his political career, causing enormous harm to his people, pretending he cares about their welfare when he doesn’t give a damn.

His demagogic address offered no specific policy changes, nothing to suggest he’s turning a new leaf, everything to show business as usual will continue.

Moderate Hamas official Ghazi Hamad said his remarks were “nothing more than words.” The international community ignored them.

Settlement construction on stolen Palestinian land continues unabated. So does occupation harshness.

Abbas’ promised “bombshell” fell flat, laid an egg, exposed him further as a duplicitous politician - saying one thing, doing another, operating like Obama.

Even the pro-Israeli New York Times admitted he’s “in the 11th year of a four-year term” - governing illegally. His popularity “plummet(ed) over the past year.”

A September Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research poll showed two-thirds of Palestinians demand his resignation. Most favor a third intifada.

The longer Abbas remains in power along with likeminded duplicitous PA officials, the worse off Palestinians will be!
