Senator wants schools to declare They will shoot any attackers on sight

Senator Rand Paul weighed in on the Oregon shooting Wednesday, saying that schools should be armed and should place signs warning potential attackers that they will be shot on sight.

Speaking with Iowa radio host Jan Mickelson, Paul said that it’s “sad” how President Obama has attempted to politicize the Oregon shooting.

The president “doesn’t understand,” Paul said, that “the problem is mental illness and not necessarily gun registration or gun ownership.”

Paul added that “people are going to places where guns are prohibited.”

“When you have a gun-free zone at a school, it’s like an invitation, if you are crazy and want to shoot people, that’s where you go.” Paul stated.

“I would do the opposite,” the Senator urged. “I would have and encourage every school in America to put stickers on every window going into the school saying, ‘We are armed. Come in at your own peril. We have concealed carry for teachers who have it and we also have armed security and you will be shot.’”

Paul also suggested that the same signs be posted on “every cockpit of every commercial airliner.”

Research out of Rutgers University, shows that fitting houses with residential burglar alarms cuts crime in whole neighborhoods.

“Data showed that a steady decrease in burglaries in Newark between 2001 and 2005 coincided with an increase in the number of registered home burglar alarms,” said study author Dr. Seungmug Lee. “The study credits the alarms with the decrease in burglaries and the city’s overall crime rate.”

In other words, potential burglars see that there is an alarm system fitted, or a sticker in the window declaring so, and choose not to target that specific house, as well as houses in the immediate vicinity. Rand Paul’s notion of schools flaunting their armed status and their Second Amendment rights works on the same principle.

Paul added that he supports preventing “people who have exhibited criminal insanity” from owning guns, but that it is imperative that such laws are made and enforced at the state level, and not by the federal government.

In further comments, the Senator described the mass shooting violence as “perversion,” adding that it may be a direct consequence of the decline in moral values in America.

“We lack a certain belief in right and wrong, a certain Christian foundation or religious foundation to our country.” Paul said.

“But also there’s some things that are just inexplicable,” the Senator added, “that’s just mental illness, they’re not getting better with treatment and they’re not going to get necessarily better with religious influence as well.”

Paul’s view are shared by fellow GOP presidential contender Ben Carson, who has noted that shooters “tend to pick places that are gun-free zones,” and that he would like to see more people in schools trained to use weapons to defend themselves.
