A terrorism expert says three-quarters of those who become foreign fighters for the Islamic State extremist group are recruited through friends and about 20 percent through family members.

Scott Atran, co-founder of the Center for the Resolution of Intractable Conflict at Oxford University, says research has found that "radicalization rarely occurs in mosques" and very, very rarely through anonymous recruiters and strangers.

He said some Islamic State recruits come from Christian families "and they happen to be the fiercest of all the fighters we find."

Atran told a meeting held Tuesday on "Foreign Terrorist Fighters" organized by the U.N. Security Council's counter-terrorism committee that "it is the call to glory and adventure that moves these young people to join the Islamic State" and that "jihad offers them a way to become heroes."

Oxford has a "Center for the Resolution of Intractable Conflict"? I wonder if they also have a "Center for the Changing of Immutable Objects"?

"jihad offers them a way to become heroes."

Thankfully, here in this country it's relatively easy to become a hero. You don't have to volunteer to blow yourself up -- all you have to do is join the local police force.

Well, they are famous for turning -- they think -- ghetto thugs into refined scholars!

These are mostly white boys. They're converts coming from families, which belonged to once-conservative now mush-brained liberalized denominations, who have found something strong and militant to latch onto.

Once IS, or whatever you call it, is smashed to hell, they will be coming home. Somebody oughta put a hole in that boat.
