Fun! I love that kind of thing.
One of the main battlegrounds of World War II, Okinawa and its neighboring islands were under Japanese control for most of the war until the US captured them in 1945. When the war ended, the native Ryukyuan people on Okinawa believed that the US would make the island chain an independent country. However, the islands reverted to Japanese control.
Those poor fools actually believed the USG, didn't they!
