There are more Hispanics in America than blacks. Why aren’t they bitching about this year’s Oscars like blacks are?

Don’t misunderstand me, dearest friends—I’m glad they’re not bitching. Or at least it doesn’t seem like they are. They could be bitching all day and night in Spanish, and I’d have no way of knowing. It’s almost as if they occupy their own country within this country, you know?

But many black Americans these days seem quite happy to promote a culture of complaint. More and more I suspect that beneath every Steve Urkel lurks a Black Panther. Millionaire black activists are crying again, and I appear to have run out of Kleenex. In both fantasy and reality, there is nowhere on Earth that blacks have it better than the American media, yet still they gripe. Will Smith has taken the fact that he’s a boring black guy and milked it to the point where his Hollywood career has given him a net worth of a quarter-billion semolians. Yet this uppity ingrate has announced that due to the fact that none of the major acting nominees this year is a Negro, he and his wife Jada Pinkett-Smith will not be gracing this year’s Academy Awards ceremony with their coconut-scented presence. Spike Lee, that noble auteur and proud descendant of the pygmy peoples, has likewise dropped out. “There are more Hispanics in America than blacks. Why aren’t they bitching about this year’s Oscars like blacks are?”

The Academy is so prejudiced against Bantus, they had selected black comic Chris Rock to host this year’s ceremonies. To show that he is not an Uncle Tom and to stick it to the industry that hates his skin color so much they chose him to host the Oscars, Rock is allegedly rewriting all his material for the show to reflect the unbearable lack of blackness among this year’s nominees. And on Friday, the Academy issued a hastily composed press release swearing up and down that it will take “HISTORIC ACTION TO INCREASE DIVERSITY.”

When they originally pitched “diversity” to us, they promised excitement and fun, not tedium and whining. This constant obsessive racial bean-counting is a form of insanity. What’s worse, most of the time they aren’t even counting the beans correctly.

But if we’re going to count beans, let’s count ‘em up right. What do the actual cold hard numbers show about which groups are underrepresented and (cough) overrepresented in American media?

According to a study by the Annenberg Center and Harnisch Foundation:

Of those characters coded for race/ethnicity across 100 top films of 2014, 73.1% were White, 4.9% were Hispanic/Latino, 12.5% were Black, 5.3% were Asian…

So since non-Hispanic whites are currently about 63% of the population, they are slightly overrepresented as Hollywood film characters. Blacks and Asians are represented almost in perfect proportion to their quotient of the population.

It’s Hispanics—who comprise about 17 percent of the population yet represent only 4.9% of film characters—who are severely underrepresented. If anyone has a right to whine, it’s them—that is, if whining is your idea of a good time.

Another study called “The Latino Media Gap” says the group’s presence in English-language American media has actually declined since the 1950s:

For example, in the 1950s, Latinos were on average 2.8% of the U.S. population. In the top ten scripted shows, however, Latinos were 3.9% of lead actor appearances and 1.5% of all lead roles; in the top ten movies, Latinos made up 1.3% of lead appearances and played 1.7% of lead roles. Yet, in 2013, despite being 17% of the population, Latinos comprised none of the lead actors among the top ten movies and scripted network TV shows.

“The Latino Media Gap” condemns Hollywood as “overwhelmingly white, middle-aged, and male. It quotes an unnamed “diversity executive”:

Writers tend to write what they know. And what they know is Beverly Hills to car to studio and back, always surrounded by people like themselves.

I decided to check on what kind of people live in Beverly Hills, and it turns out that the city is 61 percent Jewish. And by a miraculous stroke of mathematical improbability, “all eight major film studios are run by men who happen to be Jewish,” or at least that was the case in 2008. Top media executives are so disproportionately Jewish, one wonders why everyone is complaining about white people in Hollywood but no one makes a peep about Jews.

We appear to live in a world where everything is “too white” but nothing can ever possibly be “too Jewish.” That seems like a dangerously fragile double standard. Interesting times.

But to answer my original question, I think that American Hispanics aren’t complaining about the Anglo media because Hispanics have their own media. This is in addition to their own language, their own culture, and their own neighborhoods. They have a couple of their own major cable channels, hundreds of their own newspapers, and over a thousand of their own radio stations. With their numbers topping fifty million, they are the largest deliberately self-segregating ethnic bloc in America, slowly forming their own nation while the rest of the nation largely ignores them.

They seem to have good reasons for being a silent minority. Whether they’re silently plotting against me I’ll never know, at least not until I take some Spanish lessons.

I won’t even bother to check whether Mexicans are adequately represented in the Mexican film industry or whether there are sufficient numbers of Puerto Rican anchormen in San Juan. Worrying about “diversity” only seems to happen in majority-white countries.

But Hispanics seem fine just keeping to themselves. That’s why they don’t need no stinking Oscars.
