Will Chelsea Clinton Continue the Clinton's Corrupt Dynasty? In the conservative press, there is near endless discussion of Hillary Clinton and her scandals and whether she will be the Democratic nominee for president (unless she is indicted by the Justice Department over her email server). And of course, there is also discussion about her often embarrassing, now thinner husband, ex-president Bill. But overlooked in many circles is another Clinton, who some say may be just a few years away from carrying the torch for the Clinton family dynasty well into the future. That Clinton is Chelsea, Bill and Hillary's mildly annoying, entitled bratty daughter.
Not so much in the spotlight as when she was living in the White House, Chelsea has nonetheless captured media attention recently as she helped campaign for her Mom and appeared at private fundraisers for Hillary's 2016 presidential bid. Additional appearances on talk shows such as Ellen DeGeneres and Extra have propelled quiet discussions and rumblings that she may, in fact, harbor political ambitions, which would be no surprise, considering her roots and her hyper-ambitious parents.
Her familial fame no doubt was responsible for her landing a cushy job at NBC News, despite having no background in journalism, where she was a "Special Correspondent" with now-discredited host Brian Williams on the "Rock Center" program. Up until 2014, she received $600,000 per year for a few ad hoc broadcasts, such as the enlightened one where she interviewed sponsored animated character the Geico Gecko; industry veterans thought her reporting was something of a broadcast joke.
She now works for her father's self-named Foundation and at the Clinton Global Initiative, both alleged non-profits (with endowments in the billions of dollars), where she sits on the boards of both. In fact, in 2013, the formal name of the Clinton Foundation was expanded to include Chelsea's name in addition to Bill and Hillary's. As Vice-Chairwoman of the former organization, Chelsea has apparently influenced the hiring and firing of more than one executive. For the two Clinton foundations, Chelsea is hired for speeches, the fees for which are as high as $65,000 per hour, all of which go to the foundations' soaring endowments.
These roles followed seemingly endless schooling at Stanford University, Columbia University and Oxford University — where she got not one, but two degrees. In fact, from start to finish, her post-high school education covered 18 years.
Despite Hillary Clinton's badmouthing Wall Street, Chelsea married a Goldman Sachs investment banker, Marc Mezvinsky, in 2010, and bore him a child. They have a second baby on the way, due in the summer of 2016, following their purchase of a $10.5 million condo in Manhattan's Flatiron district.
Most people are not aware that Mezvinsky is the son of two former scandal-ridden Democratic Congress members, Marjorie Margolies-Mezvinsky and Edward Mezvinsky, both of whom are discredited, having had legal action taken against them.
Marjorie Margolies-Mezvinsky cast the deciding vote in favor of Bill Clinton's federal budget in 1993, a decision which led to much wrath and enmity from many of her Pennsylvania constituents in the months and years following, even mandating a police escort for her at some public events, so vehement was the reaction.
Edward Mezvinsky was the head of the Pennsylvania Democratic party after serving as a Congressman and running unsuccessfully for several other offices. He was later convicted of bank fraud, mail fraud and wire fraud, receiving an eight-year prison sentence for conning his constituents (including his own mother-in-law) with Africa-centric — as in "Nigerian Prince" — email and Ponzi schemes, which he abetted by using the Clintons' name. This caused Marjorie to declare bankruptcy; however, the judge in the case refused to release her from her debts, claiming that she had had hidden $775,000 in assets from the court. As of 2010, Edward still owed his constituents $9.4 million in restitution funds. The couple divorced in 2007.
As a member of the millennial generation, Chelsea actively campaigned for Hillary during Hillary's disastrous 2008 presidential campaign, speaking at over 100 colleges on her mother's behalf. She answered student questions but did not give press interviews or respond to reporters' questions, even when a 9-year-old child representing Scholastic News attempted to query her about her family.
At the same time, Chelsea appeared on the cover of Elle magazine wearing more than $100,000 worth of clothing and jewelry and therein discussed her mother's presidential campaign, which purported to be fighting for "middle-class families."
For Hillary's 2016 campaign, Chelsea has brought her infant daughter into the spotlight, claiming that Hillary has excellent "grandmother qualities." In January of this year, Chelsea was dispatched solo to deliver biting remarks about her mother's opponent Bernie Sanders that Hillary was either too afraid or too disingenuous to offer herself. Conservative websites crowed over Chelsea's role as a ruthless "attack dog." Over the years, there have been allegations in the press that Chelsea was being "pimped out" by Hillary and Bill, a charge all of the Clintons wearily denied.
Nevertheless, as the House Select Committee on investigating Benghazi revealed, Hillary was confiding sensitive national security details in Chelsea via her private email server in at least one email sent from the unsecured computer. In the email, dated September 11, 2012 — the evening of the first attack — Hillary tells Chelsea that the incident was a terrorist act, despite stating to reporters in the days following the event that the acts were the spontaneous result of a political demonstration occurring at the American consulate — a claim that was refuted weeks later.
Charges of Chelsea being one of Hillary's closest confidants and advisors have followed her ever since web journal Politico did a story on the allegation. In the meantime, Chelsea has written a book, entitled, "It's Your World," a tome directed at young people to encourage and spread "change" as regards to issues such as the environment, global warming, international relations and voter registration. One can only imagine this work, in association with media promotions such as the Elle cover, is testing the waters to see what sort of influence Chelsea wields over her generation.
What does the future hold for Chelsea? She has told Sky News that she would "absolutely consider" a political career. As she declared to CNN, "I believe that engaging in the political process is part of being a good person. And I certainly believe that part of helping to build a better world is ensuring that we have political leaders who are committed to that premise. So if there were to be a point where it was something I felt called to do and I didn't think there was someone who was sufficiently committed to building a healthier, more just, more equitable, more productive world? Then that would be a question I'd have to ask and answer."
As a response, this is the kind of statement a politician offers when trying to be coy, as Ellen DeGeneres pointed out when Chelsea was on her show and gave a similar comment to this effect. Whether Chelsea's answer in question is "Yes" remains to be seen, but for now, even a "Maybe" should be worrying enough to conservatives.
