An Asian cop shot and killed an unarmed black man on the stairs. The elevator did not work so he had to walk down the stairs. The cop pulled his gun and fired without provocation. The bullet hit the wall. The ricochet killed the man.
Officer Peter Liang, who is Chinese-American, fatally shot Akai Gurley in the darkened stairwell of a Brooklyn housing project. In February, a jury convicted Liang of manslaughter and official misconduct, but the judge made the rare decision to reduce the verdict to criminally negligent homicide. The case has sparked a debate within the Asian-American community as some say Liang was scapegoated because of his race. We host a heated discussion with Gurleys aunt, Hertencia Petersen; Cathy Dang, executive director of CAAAV Organizing Asian Communities, which has supported Akai Gurleys family; and John Liu, the former New York City comptroller who supports Officer Liang.
Although Liang should never have fired, I go with the Judge's decision; it's still homicide.
The most dangerous man to any government is the man who is able to think things out... without regard to the prevailing superstitions and taboos. Almost inevitably he comes to the conclusion that the government he lives under is dishonest, insane, intolerable. ~ H. L. Mencken
