Kerry’s Claim About Progress Toward Peace in Syria Belies Reality on the Ground

by Stephen Lendman

Now in its 6th year, Obama’s war on Syria remains committed to its main goal - transforming the nation into another US vassal state, partitioning it, stealing its resources, exploiting its people.

Days earlier, Kerry’s claim about “mov(ing) the ball forward (toward) a comprehensive ceasefire” is utter rubbish. Little on the ground changed. Things are dangerously close to escalated war.

US-supported terrorists continue moving freely from Turkey into Syria on a virtual daily basis. Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said Ankara’s support contributes greatly to deteriorating conditions.

Peace talks collapsed, ceasefire more fantasy than real. Multiple daily violations continue. Since cessation was agreed on in late February, the Russian Coordination Center reported 568 violations through May 20, virtually all by US supported terrorist groups.

Syrian media reported government forces continue battling terrorists “across the country.” Depleted ranks are reinforced with heavily armed new recruits.

Nothing suggests an end of fighting in prospect. Plenty indicates US-supported endless war.

On Friday, senior Iranian cleric Mohammad Emami Kashani warned of US plots to create and widen rifts among Muslims, saying US global arrogance fosters Islamophobia and Iranophobia.

Defeating its scheme requires Islamic unity, he stressed. In early May, Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei blasted US imperial policies, irresponsibly blaming Tehran for its destructive agenda.

False US accusations about Iran supporting terrorism lets Washington unjustifiably impose new sanctions, violating the nuclear deal, wanting the Islamic Republic kept isolated ahead of longstanding regime change plans - by color revolution or war.

Another round of farcical Syria peace talks may be held in late May or early June. They’ll be dead- on-arrival like earlier ones.

Expect Washington to use failure as a pretext for escalated fighting, making deplorable conditions on the ground far worse.
