Joe Biden reveals America’s biggest problem

Posted on May 23, 2016 by Sam Rolley

During a recent speaking engagement, Vice President Joe Biden told the audience that he’s never held a private sector job or cashed a paycheck.

The vice president was joking; but the fact that he sees it as comical that the nation is being run by people whose only ambition is political power should be unsettling to average hardworking Americans.

“I’ve never been gainfully employed in my life. I don’t know what the hell I’m going to do,” Biden said of the nearing end of his vice presidency.

He told members of the National Urban League’s Legislative Policy Conference that he may need some “career advice” from attendees to figure out what to do next.

“I’ve never cashed a paycheck in my entire life, you think I’m joking, I’m not,” Biden said.

Biden may be exaggerating; but he really isn’t joking. He was first elected to the U.S. Senate at 29 and has spent the following 44 years in federal government.

And he isn’t alone.

The Washington Post noted a couple years ago: “There are many more people populating our state legislatures and U.S. Congress who have never done anything outside of being a professional politician than there were even a few decades ago.”

The paper pointed out that the number of lawmakers who list their prior professions as “public service/politics” when taking office has increased massively in recent years. And once small time politicians hit it big and join the Washington machine, many never leave.

According to figures from Brookings, about 20 percent of Representatives in the House have held their seats for at least two decades. Some have been there much longer. In the Senate, things don’t look much better. Fourteen of the lawmakers currently serving in that body have been in office at least 20 years.

not too much

Biden was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, in 1942, and lived there for ten years before moving to Delaware. He became an attorney in 1969, and was elected to the New Castle County council in 1970. Biden was first elected to the Senate in 1972, and became the sixth-youngest senator in U.S. history.

That is a good synopsis of Biden's political career. He became a pettifogger shyster when I was a freshman in High School. So he's been around the block a few times.

I was a dumb truck driver most of my life. But you got to have some real smarts to pull that load and find your way around. ;)
