RI... Now I understand the clumsiness and incoherence of the conspirators and their supposed helplessness.

What we know about Turkey:

First, Erdogan declared an emergency. “To further democracy, freedom and human rights…bla-bla-bla…” We know that a state of emergency means only one thing: they failed to suppress all the country’s hotbeds and had to introduce emergency measures to do the job.

Secondly – an astonishing, scandalous statement that Russia was to blame for the suppression of the coup.

I’m quoting the government’s Rossiyskaya Gazeta:

“A few hours before the beginning of the military coup, Russia warned President Recep Erdogan about it, according to a TASS report referring to Arab media. “Intelligence information was obtained from Russian troops located in the region, who intercepted radio messages. Among other things the members of the conspiracy discussed plans to send a few military helicopters to the hotel in Marmaris where Erdogan was staying, to arrest or kill the president.

“We don’t known exactly how the Russians intercepted the radio conversations of the putschists, but it probably happened at the air base in Hmeymim, Syria, where Russian military collect information for the units that are fighting terrorism.

“They managed to suppress the coup due to this information, which had been reported to Turkish intelligence a few hours before it began. The army ordered all air and land-based forces across the country to cease activity, and for transport vehicles to hold their positions.”

Now I understand the clumsiness and incoherence of the conspirators and their supposed helplessness. Our military betrayed them.

Apparently, junior Russian officers, reading the radio signals, ran to their majors and lieutenant colonels, to whom they must report such events. The mayors and lieutenant colonels reported up. National authorities took the decision to inform Erdogan.

He is a devil. When you help him you are acting against yourselves, against Assad, the Alawites, the troops of the Syrian Arab Republic, against Iranian volunteers and Kurds. Don’t you have a clue?

You’ll be responsible for preserving the infernal Turkish regime.

Rollo10 Who were the 'over-throwers' and what were their intentions, post coup? Turkey would have been controlled by the Zionist puppets who want to wage war across the ME. The reason the coup came about, was because Erdogan had decided to join Russia, Syria and Israel [not Netinyahoo] and turn his back on the American war machine.+10

Spunkyhunk Rollo10 • The coup plotters had nothing to do with "Zionist puppets". They were a small group of ordinary secular Turkish army officers fed up with Erdogan. With inadequate resources at their disposal, and in a rush, they planned and executed the coup in an incompetent and amateurish way (and were probably betrayed to Erdogan's forces by the stupid Russian government). It is the ERDOGAN REGIME'S OWN PROPAGANDA which claims that the coup was externally supported - in order to try to gain internal and international sympathy for itself. YOU ARE FALLING EXACTLY INTO THIS PROPAGANDA TRAP OF THE ERDOGANISTS! Research, read, use your head, and dispel your ignorance a little bit more, before posting rubbish on political websites!

paul • With all due respect...Russia has a first-class Foreign Ministry with Lavrov at the top. If he and Putin believe backing Erdogan now is the best option I trust their judgment.+48

VeeNarian (Yerevan) paul • If Russia tipped off Erdogan about a US/EU/NATO/Gulenist coup then what's the problem? This is how new allies are made and old ones exposed for what they are. Now Turkey will be on the side of the free world or there will soon be another coup until it submits. It really is that simple and I think Erdogan and the Turkish people have got that message. + 24

Tatarewicz/ VeeNarian (Yerevan) • If true, then certainly a nifty chess move on the part of Putin.

Julius Caesar Augustus • Russia did the right thing, these coup rebels would have been US puppets anyway. When Turkey decided to mend relations with Russia, the CIA backed a coup that has failed horribly, and now they are in deep panic. Putin called that right, the enemy of my enemy is my friend. This is one of the many geopolitical mistakes that the declining US empire has made, and each one pushes them closer to the edge of the cliff.+6

kraut2 • This was not a coup, it was a bad theater play by dilettantes. They had no political parties behind them, hardly none of the populace to support them and only a minority of the army. All that one would achieve with such bullshit is to strengthen Erdogan's regime, and that is what happened. With the Russian info the Turks could have stopped the coup before it even began, but they wanted to have the idiocy play out to give Erdogan the means for a crackdown in the civil and military administration.

Had the Russian not given the info, the likely hood is that more lives would have been lost before the forces against a military coup could have been mobilized, and that turmoil could have convinced Daesh to get into the game, the last thing Russia wants to happen.

The tepid response by the US in the first hour of the news indicates who had an interest in it succeeding - USA and the EU, because Erdogan finally remembered where his bread is buttered - to deal with Russia, to stabilize Syria and eliminate Daesh because they were stupid enough to attack inside Turkey.+5

peter • Obviously the writer had never bothered to read the comments of some of the leaders of the failed coup. They explicitly said that they believed that Erdie was way too soft on the Kurds and these guys would stiffen the resolve. I for one am glad Erdie is still around. He is the lesser of the two evils. He'll be going to Russia shortly to personally thank Putin and again, humbly apologise for the shoot down of the Russian jet. It has taken a lot of events to perhaps, help Erdie see the light at the end of the tunnel. He sees Russia and the economic benefits, including a restart of south stream, and hopefully he will request to join the EEU. I hope he walks from Nato, who knew about the coup and did nothing and amerika who hoped to install Gulen because he is more compliant with amerika's and nato's goal of total encirclement of Russia.

Dasa Jarosova Spunkyhunk • if it was staged by Erdogan himself then, can you explain to me, why did the Iranian president told Erdogan the following after the failed coup: "Stability and tranquility in Turkey have a positive impact on the atmosphere in the whole region. We have no doubt that tranquility in the Islamic world countries does not suit terrorists and some superpowers," the Iranian president stressed. He said that the past few days had shown who was Turkey’s friend or enemy both at home and abroad." Erdogan and Rouhani also agreed that Turkey can contribute to peace and stability in the Middle East TOGETHER with Iran and Russia. It is not just Russia allying itself with Turkey, it seems that they try to form a triple alliance: "Russia-Turkey-Iran". Why do Iranians want an alliance with Turkey? Iran is the one who has most at stake in Syria. So why then?

Spunkyhunk/ Dasa Jarosova •

"if it was staged by Erdogan himself..."

I didn't say it was staged by Erdogan himself; read what I wrote carefully, if you are capable of such a thing. I said that it was a genuine but incompetent coup attempt by secular army officers who had had enough of Erdogandog's regime.

As far as the Iranians go, of course they applauded the failure of a secular coup attempt in Turkey and the survival and strengthening of the Islamist Erdogan regime, because THE IRANIAN REGIME IS ITSELF AN ISLAMIST REGIME, A THEOCRACY OF MULLAHS, even if of the Shiite rather than the Sunni variety. The Iranian mullahs may disagree with Erdogan on Syria/ISIS and on Turkey's U.S./NATO alliance; but other than that, there's very little sunlight between them and a militant Islamist government such as Erdogan's. The Iranians certainly don't give a s__t about secularism, democracy or any such things. Ever since the 1979 Iranian revolution, the Iranian mullah regime has been one of the most ardent foes and critics of Turkey's secular order, and they have done everything they could to help undermine it. In the 1980s, for example, the Iranian mullahs were on excellent mutual terms with the Turkish government of Turgut Özal, a right-wing Islamist politician who, during his years in power, did many things to start undermining the secular Turkish politico-legal system as it existed then - although the same Turgut Özal was a darling and very close ally of the Reagan administration in the U.S, supposedly the "Great Satan" and Iran's no.1 enemy. In short - the Iranians are NOT a bunch of well-meaning angels, whatever you may have been led to believe...

But anyway, this discussion is largely off the mark. These types of pro forma diplomatic statements made by heads of state, presidents etc. after major events in a neighboring country mean very little in and of themselves, and are simply a kind of polite pleasantry. If the coup in Turkey had succeeded and the coup plotters had formed a new government, the same Iranian president today might be saying some placating things like "We wish our Muslim brothers in the new Turkish government luck in bringing stability to their country and hope to work together with them to bring peace to the region and end the war in Syria"; or some such similar stuff.

trid2bnrml • "Russia Should Hang Her Head in Shame for Betraying Anti-Erdogan Conspirators!"

WRONG, MR. LIMONOV! Regardless of what you or anybody else thinks about Erdogan, the fact is, THE TURKISH PEOPLE supported him, even died to protect him. How dare you condone a violent regime change against the citizens of Turkey. It's not up to YOU, who should rule Turkey...it is up to the people of Turkey.

The US and their violent coups around the world has destroyed HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF LIVES and dozens of previously prosperous and peaceful nations. THAT HAS TO STOP. Russia did the right thing by supporting INTERNATIONAL LAW, by helping to prevent the usurpation of a legitimate government.

IT IS YOU WHO SHOULD BE ASHAMED.

vann7/ Petri Krohn • Gullen is a radical muslin , a 100% puppet turk of the Americans that have been under protection of United States since a decade. He runs thousands of islamic radical schools around the world and he have been trainned by the CIA to rule Turkey one day. So if the options for Russia was to choose between a Fascist nationalist that will use any mean to stay in power and very nationalistic but that Americans cannot control... or a REligious islamic extremist that American control? then you have the coup happening at week after Erdogan talk about restoring relations with Russia. So for Russia will make sense to not allow Erdogan be replaced ,when he was ready to restore relations with Russia. Both support terrorism.. erdogan and cullen.. the difference is that now Erdogan is having second thoughts about his actions of supporting NATO war and ISIS and Alqaeda and wants to end the war.

Hassan Nasrallah • Russia and China know that Turkey's place is in Eurasia, the SCO and in the OBOR. This will deal a mortal blow to Washington. Iran and Turkey both joining Russia and China will be the death of the US and in my opinion, this is a matter of when, not if..

TellTheTruth-2 • Erdogan proposed PEACE with Syria .. after the war profits from shipping Syrian oil for ISIS dried up .. so what is the CIA to do about that? Yep .. time for a coup d'état ... but ... the CIA messed up again.

Mike • For those who don't understand Russia's move, here's why I believe they did warned Erdogan.

The coup was organized by the US/CIA as they were not pleased to see Erdogan getting closer to Russia and having his prime minister state that they intended to create peace with Syria. Anything that goes against the US narrative is prohibited within their coalition hence now wanting Erdogan gone.

Of course, since Russia and Turkey already did make peace, it was just normal for Putin to warn Erdogan of a US supported coup to kill him. That helps tremendously Russia as now it created frictions between the US and Turkey. Russia certainly would not mind seeing Turkey removed from NATO. Anything to create mistrust between the US and Turkey will be welcome.

As for the writer of this article. He was part of a political group called "The Other Russia" which was accused of being supported by the CIA, MI6 and the Mossad to try to win an election against Putin. Not only did they failed but were destroyed as the people saw them for what they were. The writer will always post anti-Putin articles as it's what he's paid to do.

I am impressed on how Putin plays his cards as he seems to win at every hand dealt to him and make the US look like incompetents.

rolltides • Erdogan owes his life to Moscow who prevented US led Coup Tuesday, 19 July 2016 The Turkish coup was originally planned for August, when the Greek Government was 'scheduled' to enter a crisis and be itself couped. This way, the entire Balkan would have entered a critical phase, with an end result of installing puppet Governments subservient to the US and a new iron curtain between US controlled Europe and Russia.

There isn't a country that didn't know a coup was underway in Turkey (apparently with the exception of the Turks who were wondering why were there tanks on the Bosphorus bridge). The specific coup-date kept being moved and wasn't known, however CNN's Christiana Amanpour helped everyone narrow it down when she set up base in Ankara and Istanbul just two days before the coup.

The Pentagon has a special relationship with CNN, and typically lets them know when the US is coup-ing a nation, so they can set up camp and report live. CNN's Amanpour has managed to get herself banned from several countries; with good reason - when she shows up in a country, something terrible happens to that country.

Russia, Iran, Syria.... were all aware of a US led coup in Turkey. For this purpose, official Moscow sent one of Putin's advisors to travel to Ankara. The trip was top secret, no one in Tehran, Damascus or even in Moscow was aware of it, only few select in Putin's inner circle. Aleksandar Dugin was the man that was sent to Ankara to warn the Turkish leadership, but also to give them a massive list of people involved in the coup.

Coup Begun a month earlier after some of the plotters were discovered

The Turkish government secretly asked its Courts to issue order for the arrest of 2,000 army, navy and air force officials after it became evident something was brewing. The Courts refused, on top of it, some of the judges involved in the Coup tipped off high ranking generals that the Government was suspicious and hot on their trail. As a result, not fully prepapred for a coup, the coup was started anyways.

Pilots who downed Su24 involved in coup For months Moscow tracked the data and voice conversations of the Turkish pilots responsible for the downing of the Russian Su24 jet. It discovered the two pilots are American implants and were used to shoot down a Russian jet in order to put a major wedge in the otherwsie cozy relationship between Ankara and Moscow. The US used the proven British tactic of "divide and conquer". There were at least several dozen Turkish officers who were American implants at the Incirlik AirBase, the AirForce and the Army as well. All were arrested.

To avoid any sort of suspicion or attract attention, Putin's advisor took an unusal road trip which took Dugin from Moscow to Astana, then to Tehran, Damascus, Nicosia and finally arriving to Ankara where he met with one of Erdogan's most trusted man, the mayor Melih Gokcek. It's old school KGB, face-to-face meetings work quite well. The Russians have gathered so much data in the past several months, that they knew precisely when, who and how the coup will start.

Initially, Erdogan's inner team were not told of Dugin's arrival in Turkey. In the interest of better Russo-Turkish relationship and mutual trust, Erdogan was now officially warned. The warning was also psychological because it came "just in time", and was meant to show Erdogan and Turkey who their real friends are. Hence the face to face meeting. Putin didn't have to do what he did, could have warned them 10 minutes before the coup, or don't warn them at all and simply let everything unfold the way the Americans envisioned.

Turkish Fighter Jets had Erdogan's plane in sight, but...

After waiting for full 24 hrs not saying absolutely anything, the Pentagon and CIA controlled media in the US went full throttle with propaganda when it became obvious their coup had failed. We saw hastily prepapred writeups how allegedly Erdogan has simply staged the coup to grab 'more power', adding his presidential plane was in sights of few Turkish F16 yet no one took a shot?

Indeed, Erdogan's plane was followed by several Turkish planes with an intention to shoot him down. Fetulah Gulen in Pennsylvania, a long time CIA asset was getting ready himself to be the new president.

What the 'media' are not telling you is that 7 Russian fighter jets and two S400 rocket systems in Northern Syria were tracking down the Turkish jets issuing them a warning if the Russian radar systems picked up any activity from them they would be promptly shot down. This is why the Turkish jets never fired, they had 'company'. Ankara's mayor didn't waste a second. Came out on CNN and furiously announced Washington was behind the coup, and yes he had received all the necessary information prior to his announcement.

Why is Erdogan purging generals, judges... Where did he get this list of people tied with the coup? He got it From Moscow. This is why the US Ambassador in Ankara is practically in hiding and when he isn't he is a stuttering mess. But the most interesting thing here is the fact that several Turkish generals have already admitted of taking part in the Coup, and here is the kicker, they have also elaborated on the role the US played. The political statements from Washingon have zero credibility, per their usual. There is no explanation how 42 helicopters went missing from Incirlik air base, where US/NATO are practically in charge. This is why the Turkish Government cut off the power to the entire Airbase, defacto telling the US "we know what you're doing". In the end, tanks in the streets were defeated by unarmed Turkish citizens. //Gorazd Velkovski

Article author seems to be discredited, seen as anti-Putin propagandist. If Velkovski article (last poster comment) is right then Putin and company is handling affairs much better than Israel-serving charlatans of the West.
