As I think most everyone here knows, 4um is currently on borrowed time. Christine, who founded this site is no longer here, and it's continued existence is by her graces alone, for the time being. At least as far as I know.

My understanding is that 4um will be permitted to continue until the Nov election, but soon after that, the plug may be pulled. I expect that would happen with little to no explicit warning, meaning that any of us who wish to stay in contact may permanently lose the opportunity to do so unless alternate contact info is exchanged in advance.

In my last communication with Christine, I offered to take responsibility for 4um until the general election, but with no guarantees that I'd want to continue doing so after that -- maybe I would, maybe I wouldn't -- but I received no response to that limited offer. If I offered to take permanent control of the site and continue it indefinitely, she may well accept that, but I wouldn't know until I made such an offer.

If someone else made a similar serous offer -- someone she is sentimental too -- she may well agree to turn it over to that person.

There is really just one question:

Is it worth it to continuing running 4um?

There are a few costs to consider. One is the hosting fee, which could run from $50-$200 per year, along with the domain name registration fee. If I were to take it, I'd put it on my own server I'm already using for other purposes essentially making the hosting cost zero. I would also want to make the whole site encrypted, just on principle, which would make passwords and pmail really private from prying eyes.

But the other costs involve time and patience for such things as editing articles, changing PW's for people, and deciding who to kick off the site. And then there's the more serious potential issues of dealing with copyright infringement claims. Rare but it can happen.

Factored in is the current volume of posters. Are there enough people here to make it worthwhile to continue the site, or are discussion forums like this one becoming obsolete as people turn to other forms of social media, like FB? Is there any potential for new people to come here and participate, or is this site becoming more and more isolated from public view so as to be destined to become an internet ghost town?

A few notes:

Christine owns the site, but not any of us. So while she has the right to close down the site, it does not mean another successor forum site couldn't be made to replace it by me or anyone else.

She might agree to turn 4um over in it's complete form to someone else. She might agree to turn over the domain name and artwork to someone eles, but insist the entire posting history of 4um be purged. Or she might want the entire site deleted.

If the latter is the case, a new domain could be created that remaining people could migrate too in advance. (Maybe Freedom5um.com, to suggest an amusing name). The time to discuss this is now, if there's to be any discussion at all before the 4um plug gets pulled, just in case it does.

Thoughts?

I am not savvy enough to take it. I will miss it, it was a great source for different news. I hope someone takes it.

As an Intermittent poster, but a daily reader, I read here for compiled news, as well as noting attitudes.

I'm not at all inclined toward FB or Twitter if 4um goes away, so my source would likely be Breitbart and Drudge.

I've enjoyed this site for it's freedom and thank both you and Christine for your efforts!

A strong disadvantage of FB is that everything is subject to censorship according to what FB thinks is right, as well as everything being readily disclosable to law enforcement, again depending on what FB thinks what is and is not illegal, or even what FB thinks should be legal and illegal. Any LE requests for info can be expected to go unchallenged, and any assurances of privacy by FB, if there are any, can be considered as reliable as Hillary's sworn testimony.

And of course there's the completely different format of FB that really makes it unusable as a news discussion site.

Hi Neil. I thought we had an understanding that you would oversee 4um through the election. I spoke with Martin (Artisan) and he expressed an interest in taking it over from there.

I wouldn't have any problem with leaving everything as is. Critter has been kindly hosting 4um on his server without cost to me for several years. At this point, my only cost is the domain which is $20+/- a yr. I'll continue with that if there are enough people who wish to keep Freedom4um open.

Thanks so much for this information and for giving us some hope for the continuation of 4um as we know and love it.

You should be doing quarterly fund raisers for $10 so you can show a profit.

Hi Critter, you hairy one. We met back in '98 or '99. He can swear that I'm short, fat and bald like my moniker idol.

I'll reply serious thoughts later on. Need some time to think about the options.

Thanks Christine for keeping this place alive!

BY GOD YES, keep it open, you and bill and even jethro to whatever xtent , and critter too apparently, created something nice... you have been a leader.... you allowed me and my old lady argue out our differences as they have real political implications, quebec is still not on the good side of the hauge list but me and her are making it. what is more personal than family. its what we are. a political family... i find nothing wrong with blacks but object to jews claiming that they are the master race. i support womans rights and oppose modern femminazism. we cuss and swear and say racjst shit , we have our own opnions, we agree and we dissagree but above all we get along. social justice warriors be damned we get along.

i pray to god that this small but cherished site out lives them all.... their is nothing else like it.

when this site was created FREEDOM OF POLITICAL EXPRESSION was cherished above all else. it makes this place unique.... please never let it die, may freedom4um live on into infinity

Hey Chrissy. Thanks for chiming in. I was thinking if I got significant response on this thread I'd send you an email about it, but otherwise there wouldn't be much point.

So it turns out I *AM* in charge around here. Cool. Just goes to show how much effort it takes these days! For anyone who thinks it's a big responsibility, let this be a lesson to you....

Turns out I do have forum admin access (I'd told a couple people I didn't) but I found the login info. Full control/server access I'd need to contact Critter for though. I guess a question for Critter is if he'd continue hosting it gratis if a babe wasn't running the site. :^) hehe

Yes, christine, keep 4um open. It is the only place I call home now. Even living where I am in SW Missouri is a challenge for me. My health is on an even keel, but the sores on my legs have returned. I have to go weekly for doctor appointment about 30 miles away at wound clinic. Keep me in your prayers. Things are slowing down at work now with the loss of one of our major suppliers. ;)

Yes, thank you. Fred gets banned about once a week at the other place.

My psychic prediction is that things will get worse after the election in November. This is based on the likelihood that a Republican or a Democrat will be elected president.

Historically that's when things go to hell. This site will be needed more than ever.

They say Hillary has been practicing this debate for the past 2-3 weeks with someone who tries to emulate Trump's expected debating points.

Doubtless it's something she needs to do, which says something of itself.

Freedom4um is an eclectic aggregator of a wide variety of info - politics, science/technology, militaria, history, guns/ammo, weird animals, health/nutrition, etc. I'd like to see it stay around and I'd be willing to kick in a couple of $ if cost is ever an issue.

Naw,it's going to be a Republicrat. There are no real Republicans left in any position of power in what passes for our government, and may never be another one.

I agree that things are going to get entertaining after the election, though. Regardless of who gets elected, large masses of people are going to be pissed.

I wouldn't want to be stuck with maintenance and registrations or liability or any of that, but $20/yr sounds like a bargain.

Please keep it going – Thanks!

p.s. On the big sites (FB) our comments get lost in the volume - not good.

Exactly! It's best to keep your co-workers and work at a far distance from your personal life and opinions anyways. Your opinions and stance are nobody else's damn business unless you make it their business. You come home to get away from the work environment and have a brew and opine on some matter on some private blog which is nobody's damn business but your own. Besides that, I've had more intelligent conversations with people on this site and others than of those I ever come into contact with in the work environment. Seriously! I am around flaming morons in my work environment and it is always a relief to read such forums like this of people are that well-read and well-informed of what is going on not just in this country but concerning the world at large. And I know I am not alone when I say all this.
