Russia, Syria Denounce Pro-War General Assembly Resolution

by Stephen Lendman

US dirty hands are behind it, Canada used to introduce it, disgracefully serving as an imperial agent instead of seeking regional peace and stability.

The draft resolution passed 122 to 13 - Syria, Russia, China and Iran strongly opposing it - calling for cessation of hostilities in eastern Aleppo to benefit US-backed terrorists, without addressing their withdrawal from remaining pockets - including animals posing as moderates.

Russian UN envoy Vitaly Churkin called them “phantom(s),” jihadist extremists pretending otherwise. In General Assembly debate, he said they’re “gushing into the country from everywhere to help do away with the legitimate government.”

They’re aided by “extensive financial, material and propaganda support from outside. The phantom concept of the Syrian moderate opposition has actually failed.”

“We consider (foreign-backed regime change efforts in Syria) a present-day form of colonialism.” Russia is exerting “colossal effort” for cessation of hostilities and conflict resolution by diplomatic means.

It’s going all-out to supply vital humanitarian aid, while Western powers and the UN send it only to terrorists.

Syrian envoy Bashar al-Assad blasted the measure, saying “(b)efore calling for holding this meeting and submitting the draft resolution, the Canadian delegation and its partners should have listened to the harrowing accounts about the crimes of terrorist organizations that were told by tens of thousands of our people who were saved by the Syrian army and its allies in Aleppo during the past few days.”

“I would like to reassure the states that sponsor terrorism in Aleppo that the Syrian army has up to this point liberated 93% of the areas that terrorists used to control in Aleppo city, and their bloody games is taking its last breaths.”

Since Aleppo liberating efforts began, over 56 districts were freed from terrorists’ control. Remaining elements are confined to a steadily shrinking 6 square km area, their infestation soon to be eliminated entirely.

Separately, US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter said Washington “will deploy approximately 200 additional US forces (to) Syria” - showing its intention to continue its regime change project.

It remains to be seen what Trump will do once inaugurated. He pledged to combat terrorism, not pursue regime change. We’ll know soon enough if he means it.
