Several years ago, I noticed Asian ladybugs proliferating. I couldn't tell them from American ladybugs except their shell wasn't as dark red, more orangeish, and there were a lot more of them. They used to swarm my halogen lamps and sizzle. Halogens didn't get replaced after the 2nd or 3rd time the switches wore out, so I relied on shaded incandescent 3-way with Mediterranean motifs for several years. Then I saw it! An upright torch style lamp with plastic dog-collar shade that didn't need halogen bulbs! Eeeeek! And for less than thirty dollars it was mine.

I haven't seen any Asian ladybugs for a couple of years, but now have quite a few Box Elder Bugs. They don't seem to be invasive or destructive, but there are hundreds of them in the warmer months. Once in a while one will find it's way into the house, and cling quietly to the ceiling or something.

Box Elder Bugs, like all bugs, are fascinated with light. Once every few weeks one of them will bond with my torchlamp and contine walking the rim for the few days or hous left in its life. It casts shadows on the nearby walls and ceiling, sort of like watching a wind-up train or something, around and around....

You should get out more...

“The most dangerous man to any government is the man who is able to think things out... without regard to the prevailing superstitions and taboos. Almost inevitably he comes to the conclusion that the government he lives under is dishonest, insane, intolerable.” ~ H. L. Mencken

Better call Orkin.

Orkin ain't gonna help these folks!

Fortunately I don't don't have a lot of dead trees on my property. The Box Elder Bugs like to sun themselves on my east facing vinyl siding to catch the morning sun.

“I am not one of those weak-spirited, sappy Americans who want to be liked by all the people around them. I don’t care if people hate my guts; I assume most of them do. The important question is whether they are in a position to do anything about it. My affections, being concentrated over a few people, are not spread all over Hell in a vile attempt to placate sulky, worthless shits.” - William S Burroughs
