Following a day of heavy rain that caused one death and drenched the greater Los Angeles area, a 20-foot sinkhole opened up in Studio City Friday night, swallowing two cars and trapping one person before a successful rescue, officials said.

The hole opened up about 8:15 p.m., according to Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Erik Scott.

It formed in the 12000 block of Woodbridge St. where the road meets Laurel Canyon Boulevard. It was unclear how the first car ended up inside.

About 8:40 p.m., as emergency responders watched, a second car perched near the top of the sinkhole — with its windshield wipers still going — fell down into the pit. The first car was beneath it and appeared to be flipped over.

“At least one occupant was trapped and was rescued by firefighters,” Scott said, adding the victim was transported to a local hospital in unknown condition.

Aerial footage from ABC7 showed water raging underneath the roadway and quickly fill the hole as emergency crews planned their next move. (1 image)
