I worked security at a bar named Julie's in far NW suburban Chicago. The owner hired all Mexican crew as bus boys and kitchen staff. He said every one of them was worth two of us white guys. But I was working security and he sure could not get a Mexican to do that.
When we closed that place we would go in this wild joint called "Half Day Inn". It had bullet holes in the ceiling. That was in Lake County. If it was Cook County and there was any kind of shooting there would have been cops everywhere. Up there it was just another night on the town.
I heard they closed the place and tore it down. But a guy salvaged the bar and some other things from it. They are supposed to open a new Half Day Inn in nearby Mundelein. But I doubt it will be anything like the old place. Half Day was unincorporated and it was annexed by Vernon Hills. ;)
Thanks Hap, that was a great article about that old gin mill. Can't say that I miss the old place since it was not one of my regular watering holes. ;)
