President Donald Trump, whose family and political aides have faced scrutiny over their ties to Russia, rejected a bid by Exxon Mobil Corp. to sidestep U.S. sanctions against Moscow and resume an oil venture with a politically powerful Russian energy firm.

The announcement Friday comes as the White House pushes to firm up the president's foreign-policy and domestic agenda as he nears his 100th day in office next week.

Mr. Trump's decision to block Exxon Mobil, until the end of last year headed by Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, also shows how efforts to build bridges with Russian President Vladimir Putin are proving difficult, senior U.S. officials said.

Extremely.

I know Tillison is probably pissed about it.

Who is Trump caving to? McCain? Graham? McConnell?

It doesn't make sense. Exxon working in Russia does not do one iota of harm to US national interests.

Bad move on Trump's part.

Stupid indeed.Just toadying up to Israel which doesn't like Russia's interference with its expansion in ME and into Ukraine. Stupid because keeping Exxon out of Russia precludes the use of the world's best oil development technology for oil that's powering most of Europe; works against company profits and dividends for mostly American shareholders.

Yes, but no.

Russia has already garnished the majority of American oil industry technology to be able to exploit all their gas and oil resources to their fullest.

Plus, most of the hardware now comes out of China, which was freely given the technology by the greedy American oil companies to squeeze more profits by undercutting American oil equipment manufacturers and simply transferring the tech to make it inside China instead.

American have no clue about how much of what they touch, or even consume (where energy is concerned - electricity and petroleum) are manufactured in China.

Trump is 100% right on this, but no way in hell is he or anyone else going to reverse it.

Extracting the maximum amount of oil is tricky business; talk to a retired tool push.

I already have.

And what they say is that Russia already has the tech to do anything they want to do, and they will get any equipment they need already off the shelf, or have it fabbed, and both from China.

Do you have any more questions on this subject?

Doubtful Russia has best tech for getting maximum oil from a field; otherwise we would have read that locals are using a Russian discovery/technique. Even Canadian explorers have developed more efficient mining that's been publicized. Fracking originated in the West. Russia may be more careful; appears to have avoided BP-type blowouts.
