“Unschooling” is an educational method advocating learning in a natural environment via self-direction of the student. Around since the 1970s and used by educator John Holt, it is still considered to be a controversial method of schooling for children. While homeschooling has attracted wide- spread debate, what is normally considered a sub-set, unschooling is a more extreme philosophy focusing on equipping the child with real world situations.

Inventor and entrepreneur of SpaceX, PayPal, and Tesla Motors, Elon Musk has set up his own alternative school for his children, describing the process as “unschooling,” after he reveled that traditional schooling was neither valuable nor interesting to him as a child. “I didn’t see the regular schools doing the things I thought should be done,” Musk said.

Taking on the more radical approach to schooling, Musk’s children will learn through natural life experiences, which present themselves on a daily basis. Household responsibilities, play, work experience, mentoring, books and elective classes that the child is interested in, will most likely be on the agenda. The intent will be to focus the child’s curiosity and exploration of activities initiated by them under the philosophy that if it is more meaningful to the child, it will become more understood, and useful.

There is something to be said about the man who thinks outside the box. Musk speaks about several topics including being a “multi-planet population” or electric cars becoming the norm, as essential occurrences for the necessity of our survival as a race. Self-taught in a lot of fields, Musk states in an interview below that he “learns what he needs to learn to accomplish an objective.” He goes on to say that most people “self-limit [their learning ability]. If you read a lot of books and talk to people you can learn anything.”

A self-professed bookaholic because his family moved around a lot in his childhood, his own self-directed learning is part of the legacy he accepts and acknowledges; that he now passes down to his own family. Down to earth with humble beginnings, Elon Musk reiterates that anything is possible if the person can remove their own limitations. Something he no doubt hopes to pass through to his five sons’ through unschooling.

“It makes more sense to cater the education to match their aptitudes and their abilities.” It isn’t a production assembly line – treating every child the same. Problem solving is taught, and along with that, the understanding of the tools used to solve those problems is also imparted. He wants his children, and all children, to reach for the stars in an unhindered and open-minded way.

I agree.

All traditional schooling does is keep the juvenile delinquents off the streets for several hours a day, provide union jobs for communists, and create drones for meaningless jobs requiring no thought.

The BEST that can be said about public schools for bright children is access to a good library where they can meet other children with good minds to discuss thinks wit and learn from each other. Things that have nothing to do with rap music,Justin Beiber, fashion, etc, etc, etc.

All a child needs to be educated is a library card

With the internet that's not even necessary.

I disagree. Children are nothing less than partially-grown adults, and like all people to really learn they need to have peers to bounce ideas off of,and to be presented with new ideas that are bounced off of them.

And it is vitally important for smart children to be in the company of other smart children. Dumb children bore them, and even bright children might be reluctant to express an opinion or a new idea to an adult because too many adults have their heads up there asses and automatically think they are smarter than all children just because they are children.

I have had some conversations with children that were so smart they were a little scary, but as hard as it may be for any of you to believe,I am NEVER "short" with children like I can be with what passed for adults these days, and I NEVER ridicule any idea any child throws at me.

Very few new ideas come from a vacuum.

Libraries do not traditionally encourage socializing was the main point.

I agree smart children need to be around other smart children. It is not a matter of where it happens, but that it happens at all. I remember as far back as first grade, probably even earlier, I gravitated to the smarter kids. By third or fourth grade it was obvious some people weren't as intelligent as others. There was not much of a class factor in elementary school, we all lived in the same subdivision, and most of our parents were autoworkers or otherwise lower middle class. But some of the kids were just rock stupid, it was obvious.

I absolutely believe you, I am the same way. Except I will be extremely direct with rude children.

I have a cousin that is a genius. Have not seen her in years so no idea what is happening with her.

But her mother passed away a couple of years ago from lung cancer. She never once smoked a cigarette. But both of her parents were heavy smokers. She was exposed to that 2nd hand smoke her whole young life and it came back to haunt her. ;)

Most smokers' kids never touch'em. Unfortunately, my folks never smoked.

Fortune has nothing to do with it, we chose to smoke.

I recently met someone in same situation. Told her about Andy Kaufman.

She came back to my house the next day, so I'll count that as a win :)

I once taught a little kid how to do a head butt. He was good at it and even tried it on me once. It did not work. ;)

Once lifted off their feet and out of kicking range children have very little power in the face of a determined caregiver. So do adults come to think of it :)

True, but with adults it's best to pick them up by the necks. You don't even have to pick them up all the way. Just to their tiptoes is far enough to get their attention.

Pretty much everybody is willing to listen to reason when you have a firm grip on their throats.

That requires incredible muscle tone, can't even begin to imagine getting it to work for me.

when you have a firm grip on their throats.

I was working a concert at Cubby Bear Lounge across from Wrigley Field. This kid was swinging his feet around wildly. I just reached out and grabbed him by his jaw. That got his attention. ;)

At one time I could do multiple repetitions putting 250 lbs above my head, and could deadlift 435 lbs multiple times.

When I grabbed you by the throat, you paid attention to what I was telling you.
