Recreated face of Queen Nefertiti sparks 'whitewashing' race row

Ancient Egypt's Queen Nefertiti bust sparks outrage

A bust of the Ancient Egyptian Queen Nefertiti sparks outrage on social media. Many claim the rendering is whitewashed.

What was supposed to be a historical reconstruction project, showing the face of King Tut's biological mother Queen Nefertiti for the first time, has turned sour, amid accusations of whitewashing.

The Travel Channel, as part of its series "Expedition Unknown" with Josh Gates, will showcase 3-D imaging technology to map the mummy of Nefertiti's face and create a replica. Paleoartist Elisabeth Daynès, who had previously recreated King Tut more than a decade ago, sculpted the bust of Nefertiti, which was then compared to images of her face.

"This remarkable face seems to be consistent with ancient representations of Nefertiti," said Egyptologist Dr. Aidan Dodson of Bristol University in a release. "It's extraordinary. When taken alongside the latest reading of the genetic data, this provides us with truly exciting evidence that the mummy of the Younger Lady is none other than Queen Nefertiti herself."

FINAL ANSWER MAY BE NEAR ON KING TUT TOMB MYSTERY

It is in the comments about Nefertiti's looks and the subsequent 3-D modeling that have sparked criticism.

The Sun reports that some on social media have pointed out that Nefertiti appears to have a lighter skin tone than is believed to be accurate.

Obviously, the news media thinks Nefertiti should be a black woman. But nothing could be further from the truth. If you look at the hieroglyphs, you can see how the Ancient Egyptians were portrayed, as well as other races. The negroes were colored black and the Arabs brown. The ancient Egyptians were colored red because they were sun burned just like whites sun burn today. It is all there for the critical eye to see.

I don't think it's realistic to surmise that Egyptians were perpetually sunburned. If they were, their mortality rate would have wiped them out. Sunburn is not simply an inconvenient irritation, but a damaging of the largest organ in the human body, the skin. Perpetual sunburn would eventually prove fatal, indirectly if not directly.

If it's true that hieroglyphs depicted red but not any white people, it was either because red was their natural color, the pigment in the hieroglyphs changed chemically over the centuries, or maybe it was a preferred but inaccurate coloration of paler skinned people depicted by the artists for some unknown reason. Or some other reason.

As for the desert climate of Egypt, I wouldn't rule out the possibility that the area was much greener thousands of years ago. Civilizations need an abundance of food to exist, afterall. Maybe the Nile offered sufficient irrigation opportunity, but it appears vegetation changes can and have occurred in large land areas in such a time frame in Central & South America. If so, the sun may not have been such an aggressive thing on the Egyptians back then. Maybe?

Agree. That part of the continent was much, much, more fertile thousands of years ago.

The ancient Egyptians survived the flood that took down Atlantis. They were originally white as were the pyramid builders of the Americas.
